Anyone on Tesco Mobile finding that you're getting 'TESCO' in the top left of the screen instead of 'O2-UK' after updating to iOS 4.1?

I think the AT&T carrier settings got updated, so this is probably a feature of the update. I imagine it makes Tesco happy as it gives the illusion they actually run a cellular network. :p

Yeah and it's horrible isn't it!
I'm sure one of the reasons it used to say O2 was just to get people to buy it, having tesco in the corner of your iPhone all the time kinda ruins it. Any other phone on tesco mobile has always said TESCO on it

Can someone tell me if this makes sense...

By chance called my local Tesco today to find out about iPhone availability. To my surprise they said they had two in, bare in mind one of the customer reps told me the day before that I should call back on monday next week, as thats when they get their next delivery!

..anyway the implications on buying it was that, they said the phones were originally reserved for customers but as they haven't turned up I could take it... However, apparently these phones were "locked on to PAYG phone tariffs already" so in order for me to buy it on the £20/pm 12month contract. I would have to cough up the £349 handset + £20 line rental + £10 top up .. So total up front of £379.

I would then have the opportunity to cancel the PAYG option after 10 days and revert to my preferred choice of the 12 month contract.

Does this make sense, or was the rep having me on? How can the phone be locked into a contract already? furthermore, why would they set up customers on a phone without receiving any payment, which is what I suspect might have happened:confused:

In the end I told them I'd leave it... he then confused me further by saying something about this being the new Tesco iPhone policy

WOW can't believe it, my iPhone 4 was supposed to arrive on 21 September but it just arrived now! (8th September), thanks a lot Apple :D you saved me a good 13 days :apple:

Here is my order details

Not yet shipped
Estimated Shipping: 20 Sep, 2010
Estimated Delivery: 22 Sep, 2010

Not yet shipped :( I called upon Apple and they said me that it might depend on locations as well. Where are you based on?

What senior communications position at Tesco do you hold?

It doesn't need a senior communications position at Tesco (or indeed more than 2 brain cells to rub together) to know that if your carrier name is Tesco that's what should be displayed on the phone...

looks like someone has missed the point.

What is the point?

That you want your phone to display the wrong network name?

The point is, who are you to say they won't be changing it?

You informed us with such authority, I could only assume that you hold a senior position in telecommunications.

As the previous post said:

I'm not sure why people think Tesco would want their competitor's branding on the products they sell!?

You'll know the answer to this. Why did the phone not display 'TESCO' before?

The iPhone displays the network name based on the MNC (Mobile Network Code) of the SIM that is being used.

As Tesco uses O2's network (and isn't big enough to get its own code), the iPhone didn't know that it should show "Tesco" instead of "O2:UK".

Apple can override this in the iPhone's software on a carrier by carrier basis, but that takes a little time and effort.

The other technical explanation is that the iPhone actually retrieves the carrier name from the SIM (which is what some sources indicate that it does).

The SIM stores the network name in a few different forms, and in the case of MVNOs one or more of those names might be the host network (in this case "O2:UK"). The iPhone may pick the wrong name to display when Apple hasn't programmed it to identify customers of a specific MVNO (giffgaff is a notable example).

That help?

How bizarre, so some people would rather have others think they are paying a premium to own their iPhone rather than saying with glee how much of a bargain they got with TESCO lol

I couldnt care less, I'm still opting to go with TESCO... and I will display the brand with pride:D

Just wish they had them in stock:(

+1
It seems as if they are way down the pecking order - almost as if they get the phones from O2.

I can't even find out when they expect the supply chain to ease up. I bet they know in advance for almost everything else they sell.

I'll give it a bit longer but I can see me going with Orange or O2 (reluctantly). My main reason for Tesco is the 12 month contract, then iP5 but at this rate we'll be almost there before they get stock ;-)

is anyone actually vain enough to care if it says 'tesco' no normal person you will ever meet will care.

besides every network name looks ugly compared to the simplicity of just having the number '3'

Glad to hear it :) hope you enjoy it :D

I'm looking at O2 Simplicity right now.

I'm not sure whether 300 minutes will be enough for me, so I was thinking about applying for ₤15 plan (300 minutes, unlimited sms, 500Mb) on a 12 months contract, and then, eventually, to upgrade to ₤20 plan (600 minutes, unlimited sms, 500Mb). Will I be able to do this? Or will I have to wait till my first ₤15 contract finishes (or pay a fine)?

Btw, how useful BT Openzone is (in London/City)? Does it just work (like you walking around London and it automatically connects to every BT hotspot it finds) or do I have to log-in every time?

Thanks!
