Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

I just dropped off my rMBP to get the screen replaced as it had a red tint on the top and yellow at the bottom, which the genius immediately commented that he saw it too, a couple of dead pixels, and IR, which he also agreed with. They said it would take 5 business days to replace which is fine as long as these issues get fixed

Keep us update after you use it for a while.

For all those using the test in this thread and other test tools - please take note. I have been using these test tools and was not seeing any image retention on my LG rMBP. However, I have my dark grey background up and I minimized my safari browser and noticed text boxes and text lingering around.

For those that think you have a perfect LG screen, keep checking....

I just did the test and noticed only a slight issue. I'm not worried at all because I didn't notice it with prior usage. When or if it becomes noticeable or an issue then I'll talk to apple, but right now I love my Mac.

Lucky - Goldstar (LG) is garbage. I if those can review my post history you will note I was pretty like "its all good" in the beginning but as time has passed and I've read daily the mountain of evidence its just totally unacceptable.

LG is garbage and those that can't stumped with an LG screen for the price they paid should be returning on-mass. This Poll demonstrates enough already I think.
Almost all LG displays have this problem.

It's "en masse." I'm not sure about others, but if you massacre the spelling of a pretty common expression like that, it's hard to take your other comments at all seriously. Impressions are everything.

I was laughing so hard when Apple Executive Relationship Manager called me on behalf of Tim Cook recently. He said everything on the Internet is not always true. People can write anything on the Internet. You guys are freaking out on the problem and it is not always a problem with LG display on a single one of you. Only a few that actually have a problem. I was thinking "Wati! What?! Is this a joke right?" They just haven't opened their eyes on the problem yet. It is going to take a while guys. Do you know how to speed this process up for Apple to actually see what is happening?

Apple is defending its ground baby.

Hi I picked my RMBP up on monday from the genius bar with a new replacement screen only yesterday I began to notice IR this is what has led me to believe that although your LG screen may seem perfect upon first inspection a few days down the line IR may have started to develop. Also how many people have only been given the option to get the screen replaced and how many have been given a replacement unit because the genius I was talking to said if I had not customised mine they would have swapped it out with a base configuration in the store.

…If they truly said so, they probably means that the IR couldn't be fixed in this generation. Save your money. Don't hold your hope for it. By the way, if there were only few panels with IR issue, why would they stop people replacing machines/panels?

Huh… now I doubt that the number of flawless panels probably is false. Things must be going wrong from the beginning.

If you call Apple instead of going to a store and you're within your 14-day return period they'll let you swap your computer versus replacing the screen. I've had three rMBPs total however and all except my first had some degree of image retention. I kept the first one (it's an LG display) and it hasn't shown any signs of IR...yet.

Hopefully they'll get their arms around this issue and/or stick with a supplier other than LG and we'll be able to get our screens replaced down the line if the issue gets worse.

Ugh,3rd MBPr is worse then the one it's replacing. Got an advance replacement and compared the screens. Both are Samsung, but the new one has significant backlight bleed in the top left corner... My one being replaced has a perfect screen but issues with the fans and bottom. Calling for a 4th replacement soon and hanging onto the one I was supposed to return in the meantime. This is rediculous.

My image retention seems to be getting worse and worse and the 8.1 update didn't solve anything, so I decided to call in.

Just got off the phone with AppleCare and at first the tech support said image retention was a common occurrence of LCD screens and thus normal behavior.

But then they left for 5 minutes to do "research on the issue" and came back with information that it is an LED backlit LCD and so it is not normal and should not be happening. They said that I could bring it in to the Apple store and have the geniuses take a look at it. Since it's under the AppleCare warranty I will not have to pay for any repairs.

I will be taking it in next Wednesday to have it looked at.

What a load of garbage they fed you. No, it shouldn't be happening but it's got nothing at all to do with the backlight.

It's like a maniacal broken record. EVERY SINGLE product that Apple makes there are threads like this.

God forbid people inconvenience you by trying to sort out their problems.

The primary thread on the Apple support forum is over 140 pages despite Apple constantly deleting posts.

Why would you run this test to see if you have image retention? Seems ludicrous to me.

I guess there are some people who do not understand the technology...

First off, image retention is temporary. Burn-in is permanent. Almost all screens can show image retention with the right variables in place. Using a pure black and white checker board will do one of two things... Cause the most obvious "viewable" IR due to the drastic differences between the two in the greyscale (white = 0 and black = 100). The other possibility is that your eyes are retaining the image. If you start at the image for say 30-60 seconds and then you look at a blank wall, guess what? You see the checkboard pattern. As a screen gets older, it actually becomes less prone to IR. So, for those of you who probably have less then 150-200 hours on your monitor, you will likely see less and less IR.

Oh, one more thing. LCDs are the hardest to actually get burn-in to occur. Even today's plasma televisions are pretty difficult to get a true burn-in (I fell asleep during a movie and the splash screen played for about 6-7 hours on my 2011 65" Panasonic VT30 3D HDTV... )

BTW, I do not own a rMBP, but I am very familiar with the technology which makes up monitors and HDTVs. I have calibrated about a dozen TVs for myself, family, and friends.

I'll get off my soapbox now...

I just brought mine in yesterday for the "genius" to look at it. He basically said all models do that and all the people on the Internet who claim they got one that doesn't do it are liars. He's a GENIUS though so he must be right?

You guys are all liars!

I eventually convinced him to send it in regardless but I'm not too hopeful after hearing all the stories on here. This whole thing is making me regret not waiting until the next revision. :(

People probably wouldn't be so p'ed off if this problem affected all Retina MacBook Pros, because as you say it's not a total dealbreaker, but the fact that you can either win the panel-lottery and get a Samsung screen without these problems, or lose the panel-lottery and get an IR-prone LG screen really annoys a lot of people, and quite right too I think.

I agree that some manufacturers may be more prone than others due to QA quidelines at the plant. I also understand why Apple chooses diverse sources. My company does the same thing in our datacenters -- dual power companies, dual diesel vendors, dual service companies, etc.

However, IMO, this is the same thing with flashlighting on LCDs (i.e., iPad "outbreak" of bad screens). If you have your brightness up too high or a completely black screen, it makes it appear worse. (I have to laugh because someone came up to me once with their iPad and they were totally serious and totally upset because when they turned the brightness up all the way and opened a black image, you could see more light at the edges. I asked if he uses his iPad with those settings and he said "no" but he was told this is how to test it for flashlighting... Same with IR. When your screen is too bright or you set the screen in a certain environment, you may experience IR more frequently.

I'm not saying people are not experiencing this. I'm just saying people expect too much from technology and the variances allowed in an "acceptable" product from a company. Oh, and most of the returned items end up on the refurb market... ;)

Just got a replacement screen which was also an LG. It also has IR after testing it for 10 minutes and has a slight tint as well of red at the top. I don't know what to do about it :(

I'm curious as to how many people are returning these because of this. Something they never would have noticed, but they wandered here and did this stupid test and are now unhappy.

It's that people really are getting tapped out buying these, and so all this panic makes them nervous. They can't relax, as it's so expensive.

They've got you addicted to their stuff, make you spend a fortune, and you can't even enjoy it as these threads fill you head full of nonsense.

You could have used this for years with no problems, yet somebody has pointed out that in fact your machine is actually defective. A little **it bird whispering in your ear.

What makes you so certain that it is something people would never have noticed?

And even if they wouldn't have noticed (which given my own experience with these screens seems very unlikely), what gives you the audacity to tell people that they shouldn't return a $3k product that they find does not meet their own subjective standards?

Uh, good question.

I haven't taken this test. I'm not going to. I think it's absurd. Others who come here may need to know that the test is absurd. Just my opinion.

Perhaps some can be saved :D

Note: As an analogy, I wouldn't want to take an IQ test either. Why would I want to know that i'm an idiot (I have suspicions actually, but I digress...).

What good would it do me? Actually, it could vey well *** things up pretty badly. I might give up all my delusions of grandeur that keep me going. A disaster.
