Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

I'm curious as to how many people are returning these because of this. Something they never would have noticed, but they wandered here and did this stupid test and are now unhappy.

It's that people really are getting tapped out buying these, and so all this panic makes them nervous. They can't relax, as it's so expensive.

They've got you addicted to their stuff, make you spend a fortune, and you can't even enjoy it as these threads fill you head full of nonsense.

You could have used this for years with no problems, yet somebody has pointed out that in fact your machine is actually defective. A little **it bird whispering in your ear.

No, actually, it's because I noticed it that I even came here in the first place, to see if others were having this problem. I didn't run the test before I noticed it under normal circumstances.

The problem is that it's happening in the first place. My old HP laptop didn't have this problem, so why should a Mac that costs 3x the price have a screen that has a visual defect that interferes in my daily work?

Buying a product and it not functioning the way I was told it would is not nonsense by any means.

I think the point is for some people this might be true, for others its' a more serious issue. I think for me the main issue here is that some people are ending up with a Samsung display and some are ending up with an LG display. Only the LG displays (for the most part if not completely) have the image retention issue.

Image retention should be priced differently. Maybe Apple should charge more. Maybe they should charge less. Maybe they should offer it as an option. But as the buyer/consumer when these differences exist you deserve to make that determination as the consumer that is spending the money. And that is exactly what I am doing. I am returning every rMBP until I get a Samsung display. My 3rd arrives this next week and as soon as I open it up and see that it is an LG, I will order my 4th and begin the return process for the 3rd. I could care less about having a new computer every 2 weeks until Apple gives me an equivalent product to what some of my colleagues have.

I've had three rMBPs, all with LG displays, and I'm content now that I landed one that doesn't (yet, touch wood) have the image retention issue. I would've preferred to get one with a Samsung display, but that's a total crapshoot as far as I can tell and it seems that the Samsung displays are mainly destined to be installed in base models (no proof of this, just my impression based on limited evidence).

My question is this...how are you convincing Apple to let you return computer after computer? At some point they're going to insist that you take the computer to an Apple Store for diagnosis or send it in for repair. I know I had to practically fight with the senior tech advisor to get him to send Apple a third computer (in lieu of taking it in for repair) and I'm sure a fourth would've been even worse.

And how long have you already had this computer? Are you 100% sure it has no IR so far? I'm desperately looking for someone who has had an LG panel for more than 2 weeks and is still 100% IR-free ;)

I've had it since July 20 and it still doesn't have any sign of IR, but I don't use it every day either (I use my iMac far more often). In other words, the display doesn't have that many hours on it for me to be absolutely sure it won't develop IR eventually.

I have LG display. I bought this since it launched. I was in 2-3 weeks waited period. I did the test 3 times. First and last did not show the IR. but the second time did and it quickly disappeared. Watch YouTube video more than 20 mins, no sign of IR between edge of window and background. I set background to medium dark grey that came with OS. not so sure it does have a problem. But willing to change to Samsung display.

why don't you try this app: http://www.mediafire.com/?n09robxfo5j6t17

and take a video if you can. 99.9 percent chance of showing IR imo. And I don't know whether u used the correct color background, you are supposed to use solid dark gray not medium gray.

The first time, I did exactly as the first post and no sign of IR. Today, I did two more tests of this app. No IR as well. So, I did the test 5 times overall. The second time did appear lightly and quickly gone. LG display week production 25.

If you call Apple instead of going to a store and you're within your 14-day return period they'll let you swap your computer versus replacing the screen. I've had three rMBPs total however and all except my first had some degree of image retention. I kept the first one (it's an LG display) and it hasn't shown any signs of IR...yet.

Hopefully they'll get their arms around this issue and/or stick with a supplier other than LG and we'll be able to get our screens replaced down the line if the issue gets worse.

I told them I wanted a replacement, and they honored that for me. I've had it since launch day. I did have some other wierd graphics issues as well so i think thats why the completly replaced mine. They even messed up and gave me a 2.7 ghz processor instead of the 2.6 I had bought :D

Hello,
I got my 35th week rMBP with an LG screen and of course - visible IR. I doubt they are still installing Samsung screens in the latest batches of Retina Macbooks...I think we just have to accept IR as a 'feature' and live with it.

I think not all LG displays are defected, if you were saying LG displays are more than Samsung displays and every single LG has a problem, that would be hundred thousand units out there. That would drive Apple crazy. People would go crazy on many forums more than this. There world be a lot of Returning MBPr that would force Apple to do something. but not all LG displays have IR issue. If we could narrow down the week of production, that would help others. I believe the temperature of display operation can cause IR, if it is too high.

Maybe not all, but there are people who had like 7-9 LG displays - all affected! I had two and both of them showed immidiate IR, right after unboxing. My room temperature is definitely not high...

6 displays here (4 of which I sat there in front of the manager and produced IR right out of the box) before I finally convinced him to use Ripley to find me a Samsung unit.

The amount of people getting faulty panels in a row means that either almost all LG panels are affected, or the people posting with 9 faulty panels are literally the 0.001% that are super unlucky.

I'm so sure it was the former that I bet the manager that if any of the LG panels I opened up and couldn't reproduce IR in a week, I would come back, apologize and upgrade to the highest configuration for wasting all his time.

What is a Ripley?

This is my situation. After I have produced the IR on the second test and it quickly disappeared, I contacted Apple Customer Executive relationship manager and demand Samsung display. However, I couldn't produce IR on 3rd to fifth test since then. Set my Wallpaper to darkest grey and has been looking for IR. This hold me back my decision to get a replacement as I will risk my good LG display to be replaced by highly chance of LG defected displays. except I am sure to get Samsung one. What should I do? I did kind of lie to Senior Apple engineer as mine is looking good right now. What do you think?

I noticed I also have this on my LG display. :(

I am beyond the 14 days period, what would be the best option for me?

I am using a BTO model, I assume they can't exchange mine at the apple store?

Thank you!

Just received my third LG rMBP purchase today. Tested it for IR, confirmed it still to be a problem. Placed an order for the 4th. I'll keep doing this until I get a display without an IR issue.

Interesting, I notice every keyboard on these things have a little bit different touch to them. Whatever. I'll update again in 2 weeks.

Make no mistake. All LG panels have this issue. Whether or not it is an issue for you or not is another matter.

Another easy to produce the IR issue if you don't think you have an IR issue on your LG screen is to use a solid wide background for a few minutes and then switch to the dark solid grey.

I set my wallpaper to the dark solid grey all the time. I am really looking for it. No IR. This hold me back to get replacement. What should I do? Have already set up a case with Apple.

on rMBP number 2. Also LG screen but no image retention this time.

two small scratches which I'm a bit miffed bout. Looks like a refurb rather than new - the packaing has clearly been 'put back together'. I'll put some plastic from icarbons on anyway so it will be covered, but I expected better quality control.

interestingly when I put a black full screen image on to look for backlight bleed I can see two white pixels in the lower left and right corners. They are not dead as the mouse 'hides' them. Is this normal behavior to show that the screen is powered on?

I also have new wallpaper - a blue floral wall print thingie... still on 10.8 but I didn't notice that before...

Any comments?

Just talked to the Apple Customer Relationship Manager. They said this problem is in Apple specification. IT is not a Problem. And THIS IS APPLE FINAL ANSWER. Anyone want to get replacement without 14 days of return policy, they will SAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

These are the kind of policies that make people expand their search beyond OSX. I'd -rather- not use Windows but it's not a huge deal to secure proper hardware and support.

You can't try to tell people that have never had IR on any LCD that it's normal. That's a line of BS that isn't going to fly.

sadly if people return their rMBP 28 time for IR then it is bound to get noticed. Our obsession with perfection...

If you are willing to pay $2000 plus shipping, I will ship my LG Retina MacBook Pro to you so that you can personally test it out.

It has absolutely NO image retention, NO dead pixel, and NO backlight bleed. So I don't think "all LG panels have this issue".

I have had many people ask if this was a Samsung screen, even.
