Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

Well.. add me to the list. I bought a baseline rMBP sept 5th and am going to take it back today due to IR. I noticed slight IR the first day and it seems to get progressively worse with use. I'm going to have them swap the unit out under the 14 day return policy, although I'm not sure what I expect to gain. Obtaining a Sammy display seems rare and LG displays are all plagued to some degree or another.

We'll, i'm glad I went back to the Apple store. Swapped out my week old rMBP and came back with a LSN154YL01001 panel. Easily the best screen i've ever used - no IR, no dead pixels, pure win.

Thanks for the coaching and support everyone :)

I took my RMBP (LG screen) to the genius bar about 2 weeks ago now due to IR and they replaced the screen with another LG unfortunately, since last week I have noticed IR and it has been getting progressively worse so I phoned the apple store yesterday and told them it was happening again so they told me to take it in on sunday so they could order in a replacement computer as it is a built to order. I'm much happier with this solution rather than another screen replacement as I have only had the computer for 6 weeks, I just hope it has a samsung screen and not a crappy LG.

Apple is seriously screwing up in dealing with this issue. They need to come clean!

That was what I thought before.
Mine was perfect until the 15th day. I didn't run the IR test. I noticed it right away whenever I open white windows. No need to wait for 10-15 minutes, it was instant. My 2nd rMBP started to show the IR after about 4-5 days.

Well, just wanna say that it's been a very long while since then... and I still don't see IR.

In fact, this has been my permanent wallpaper for the last 24 hours:

You would think that if there is any IR at all, it should show by now... but I still can't see any, and I've been hammering the screen to death for the past 3 weeks.

I had a samsung screen replaced by Apple (the monitor had a crack) and now got a LG.

Did you notice any change in the colors? I'd like to know if the displays are re-calibrated or not when repaired.

Also, I did not notice burn issue, but yellow and very low brightness are definitely present. I could not use max setting before when watching a movie or using the laptop in a dark room, now even in the darkness I can't see a damn thing on my rMBP if it's not at the 3 last maximum brightness settings.

I want to contact Apple and make them give me a new rBMP, CALIBRATED AS I PAID FOR, and with a display that allows me to work on it.

I also considered selling my macbook on internet and when done, buying 4-5 rBMP and giving back all of them until I find a sammy display...

I was so confident like you are. Bought it since it launched. No IR was great until it showed up. mine took months.

Mine with LG screen was great for 6 days, tip today.. :(

I am a CAD electronic PCB designer. I was only 5 minutes on my design program page and when switched to a PDF with a grey array I could see my whole design back. It takes around 30 minutes to disappear.

See here how it looks.

Needless to say I going to send this one back too.

Im also affected by this problem and its getting worse.
But even worser part of this is that i cant just go and exchange by macbook or have it repaired..Mine was bought in US but i live in Ukraine.
I always liked apple and was patient with crappy products like 4s (bad gsm reception with drops.. gps not working etc..)
but this time apple ********* me good..i spend 2.5 $ on a laptop that i cant use..
And they wont even ADMIT it officially.
Cowards.
After this Apple is dead for me.
:mad::mad::mad:
PS..5 out of 5 people i know have this issue...now im thinking that based on the FAct that it takes .sometimes .a month for this problem to develop and that not everyone complaining (yet) it might be that the scale of this problem is much bigger...
also i think that someone is already "working" on that pol!!l because the real picture is that ALL LG screens Get The IR sooner or later.

I wouldn't worry about the SSD because it seems all Retina MacBook Pros use Samsung-based SSDs.

I would worry about the screen. Some rMBPs have good screens, some have poor screens.

I apparently have a good LG screen, have had it for a few weeks, and no IR even when leaving an image or app on the same screen for an hour. I feel lucky, but I have also talked to Apple and they have made it clear that if i have any issue during the course of my warranty(applecare) they will replace the screen no questions asked, which is reassuring if it truly does become an issue.

For your information, I have run Test Retention apps several times per day for three weeks and no ghosting issues whatsoever, plus no dead pixels and the display is absolutely beautiful, I would assume at this point that I am in the clear

I like your statement, it is clear, it is decisive, and it has made it further clear that IR issues do not exist on every LG screen, there are bad bunches, and it all matters which one you get, so cross your fingers and hope for the right screen!!(not necessarily Samsung) because I have heard a lot of dead pixel complaints with samsung screens and I like my screen, no IR and no dead pixels, just what a rMBP should be...perfect

Firmware

I'm probably showing my ignorance here but can't Apple release a firmware update to alleviate a lot of the IR issues?

I think if you force it to show up, then it will.

I have had that on my iPad as well... I constantly used it at max brightness in broad daylight to show documents (static) to clients. The iPad shut off multiple times due to excess heat from sunlight... just to show you how "hard" I drove that little guy.

And it started showing IR... eventually.

I don't think I want to do that to my new rMBP.

I think some of us here are somewhat... obsessed with the notion that Samsung screens are always better, and they have already built this "prejudice" against LG screens as a result.

So they constantly try to push LG screens to the point that they show slight image retention, and then they condemn the LG screen for it.

I don't deny that there are rMBP with legitimate problems, but I think this obsessive test is bad because it forces the screen to actually show image retention even on a relatively good display.

Myself, personally, I don't show the same image on screen for more than 30 minutes. Perhaps my screen has IR... but my eyes can't perceive it, and my usage does not allow it to happen. Maybe it'll show up if I keep "pressing" the same image on screen for more than an hour... but... that's not realistic at all.

To each their own, I guess, but I'm happy with my rMBP, and I want to tell other owners to enjoy their rMBPs as well.

Could you notice the IR when switching background colors or just that color? Just wondering because I can only notice very very slight IR on that color background.

OK, the Apple Thunderbolt displays are IPS panels made by LG. Run the test on some of these LG manufactured panels and see if you're right.

LG also makes the 15" IPS panel in the HP Envy. That panel has had color gamut problems, but I have not seen anything about image retention. In fact, the last time I saw anything of this nature was with plasma televisions about ten years ago.

It's amazing to look back on this thread. I went through 4 LG screens and I got so much flack for people saying that I was just "unlucky". Funny to see how its now evolved, so happy that I finally got a Samsung display. And for those who are like "Oh well under normal usage I won't see it" it's your choice and I would totally agree had this been a common problem for both screen manufactures.

But when it came down to it, it bothered me to know that people who spent the same amount of money as I did for this was able to get a display that did not produce this issue. So I kept on chugging along and I finally got one... all my previous LG screens all had the problem and were confirmed.

This Samsung screen nearly a month later has been great! No image retention and no dead pixels, backlight bleeding, or tints.

For those who are still going I say keep on going!

You'll win the lotto eventually!

Really annoying. My second rMBP just started showing IR. I have yet to run any test to look for IR. I just notice it when I spend a few minutes on a webpage, quit safari, and can see the outline of the window against my wallpaper. I'm still within the 14 day window, so I guess I'll be headed back, hoping for a Samsung.

I really can't understand this at all. I'm very disappointed with Apple. :(

Just picked up a rMBP from Apple yesterday. Should I just see if it is an LG and swap it if it is, instead of holding on to it "hoping" to not develop an "IR" issue?

I will read most of this thread tomorrow, so this question may be answered. But why is it being refered to as "IR"? If using this term correctly, that means it goes away. So is this IR or burn-in?

It is IR since the ghosting eventually fades away.

So I just replaced my rMBP with a new display panel due to IR and received another LG screen and the first three things I notice are pinkish tints on the right half of my screen when set to white, scratches on the edge of the aluminum, and a chip on the edge. I'll probably get IR eventually and I'm thinking about replacing this for this non-uniformed display, it bothers me way too much when creating animated characters.

replace it!

What the heck is the matter with these displays (Samsung as well as LG)????

Frustratingly, my Samsung display crossed the 10 dead pixels threshold this week, about 1.5 months after I purchased it. This is my third one with this problem, and I'm not sure what to do. It's still at the level that it only bothers me when looking at photos and other darkish backgrounds, but at the current pace I will have >100 dead pixels in less than a year, at which point I think it will affect the resale value quite a bit.
