Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

The stats of the poll are pretty impressive so far...

Big caveat is that those with an LG display are more likely to notice retention -- because they expect it.

Also it is telling that 4 users see retention on their Samsung displays. That doesn't make sense. Either the display has retention or not.

All this makes it obvious that we're looking at a very subtle effect...

I have clear image retention on my LG display.

As many have pointed out, of course you don't have a checkerboard pattern sitting on your screen for 15 minutes and then switch straight to a grey background. And if they were the only circumstances under which IR was visible then it would be a non issue.

However, I do often sit with a text document open for five minutes and if I then switch to an application with a grey background - Aperture, Football Manager - the text document is still visible in those grey areas.

So it's not an artificial problem.

If you haven't got any issues, then the WhyTF would you go looking for them?

one could argue an issue is always there, its just when you become aware of it.

As Apple tends to use different manufactures for components, this issue always arises. I'm impressed by some of the analysis and troubleshooting that is done by this community.

But hey, if you choose you can accept that everything if perfect with apple products, and let these trouble makers waste their time ;). don't worry your "insert mac product" is Perfect!

i'm desperately, desperately trying to replicate image retention problems on my LG and I can't...

Should I return my RMBP anyway even though I love it??

I ain't afraid of no ghost.

If you're seeing things running through your screen,
Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!
An invisible window lying in your screen,
Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

I ain't afraid of no ghost.
I ain't afraid of no ghost.

If you're all alone, pick up the phone and call 1-800-MY-APPLE

You can purchase the optional Ghostbusters Proton Pack at Apple store for only $500... :D

haha
who u gunna call

yeah it was a joke.. either i'm terrible at finding ghosting or my LG display is as amazing on my eyes as it is .. well.. amazing on my eyes ??

I've had my RMBP for almost a month now. The other day I noticed a vertical line of light about an inch away from the left of my screen when I was switching spaces. I came here searching for what it might be and then noticed that my internet window sat an inch away from the left of my screen, needless to say, I discovered the problem was this image retention. And now I can see the horizontal lines where the top and bottom of the window are.

I performed the test and indeed, the checkerboard pattern was retained on the dark grey background. I have an LG screen.

While yeah, perhaps this only occurs during a specific scenario like this on a certain color, I actually work daily with programs with similar colored interfaces; photoshop, autocad, lightroom, 3ds max. I definitely will be giving Apple a call to see if my screen or computer can be replaced. If it's only going to get worse, I can't use this machine as it will annoy the crap out of me every time I try to get work done.

It is assuring to know that Apple will do something about it even if the two weeks after purchase are up though. Just wish I didn't live 2 hours away from the nearest Apple Store.

tried it

I tried this on a new 2.6/16/256GB, with the LG screen. I THINK this is a new LG model, LP154WT1-SJA1?

Anyway, it would appear there is SOMETHING, if I look VERY closely. I don't see any of the white or black, but I can see if I get VERY close I can faintly see a bit of a black line that would be an outline of the WHITE boxes most likely if I leave it there about 20 minutes no HIGH brightness. But not that I take this amount of time to write this email, it's gone.

This is using the dark grey background.

Try this ultimate test: Stare at the image below, if you get sick then your rMBP suffers from sea sickness... :D

I tried that test and my macbook pro just ended up looking groovy and funky.

Should I return it? I'm worried that it won't be able to do any text processing without adding the word "man" to the end of each sentence and putting kaftans on all the people in my pics. Man.

No! You should keep trying. You don't want people to think you're a quitter do you?

I used to think like you. Then I discovered that I loved running tests and benchmarks. So that's what I do now.

Are you a rastaman?... :D

WTF are you guys talking about? Your jokes aren't funny. I'm not saying that because they're insulting or patronizing, they're simply just not humorous. Plus they don't make any sense. And the little Ghostbusters song was straight-up weird. Just because it rhymed didn't make it clever.

Keep your day jobs. If you feel compelled to entertain each other, then why don't you take it offline (iMessage would work great) instead of trolling up this thread?

LG with burn in. I really could care less. This test does show some minor burn but anything else I do seems fine. This is a bunch of bloated bologna.

You are very demanding of yourself that's why you are lacking a sense of humour... I won't be surprised if you are having hard time to pick up or date someone... :D

Again, you're not making sense. What does being demanding of one's self have to do with having a sense of humor? And believe me, I don't lack a sense of humor. YOU ARE SIMPLY NOT FUNNY.

This is exactly like going to see a stand-up comic who's bombing -- eventually you just feel sorry for him and want him to stop.

And I've been married for 18 years FWIW. ;)

This is really silly. The test isn't terribly scientific, and it means very little in terms of long term image persistence, which would be a real issue.

LCD displays can exhibit this if they have to display the same thing long enough. Numerous white papers have been written on the topic, but it's less common with newer ones.

In your case, it means you set so high standards for yourself about what's funny and not, and culturally you are so closed minded that you cannot get any joke...

And believe me, I don't lack a sense of humor.
Sure . Who told that? Your wife? She was joking but you didn't get it... :D. Why don't you tell us a homemade joke and do a poll to check out if you are a really funny guy...

YOU ARE SIMPLY NOT FUNNY.
I was neither here to entertain you nor I was asking your grading... ;)

Narcissists don't get jokes, and they don't make jokes, except for sarcastic cracks and the lamest puns...

And I've been married for 18 years FWIW. ;)
I wish her good luck and patience... ;)

You make a fine point sir.

We should treat this thread with the solemnity and seriousness required. The Ultimate rMBP Image Retention Test is not a subject we should disrespect with facetious remarks and bad songwriting.

In the circumstances I think a moment of silence and quiet reflection is called for.

:D

Well... I was sure I had a near perfect image retention free LG display when I first got it but I started noticing weird darker and lighter streaks when looking at a grey image. So I did the test again today and it definitely has image retention. Very disappointing and honestly I don't know what to do. I am way past my 14 day return period and really don't know if it's worth the hassle to get the display replaced when it isn't super noticeable most of the time. I think I will hold on to it and think about bring it in if this thing gets much worse.

I didn't want to believe the one forum poster who also said his display was fine until about a month in, but this turned out to be the case. :(
