Well... I was sure I had a near perfect image retention free LG display when I first got it but I started noticing weird darker and lighter streaks when looking at a grey image. So I did the test again today and it definitely has image retention. Very disappointing and honestly I don't know what to do. I am way past my 14 day return period and really don't know if it's worth the hassle to get the display replaced when it isn't super noticeable most of the time. I think I will hold on to it and think about bring it in if this thing gets much worse.

I didn't want to believe the one forum poster who also said his display was fine until about a month in, but this turned out to be the case. :(

Knowing that some folks do not note the ghosting, I would highly recommend you to exchange it until you get a defectless one...

WTF are you guys talking about? Your jokes aren't funny. I'm not saying that because they're insulting or patronizing, they're simply just not humorous. Plus they don't make any sense. And the little Ghostbusters song was straight-up weird. Just because it rhymed didn't make it clever.

Keep your day jobs. If you feel compelled to entertain each other, then why don't you take it offline (iMessage would work great) instead of trolling up this thread?

Someone needs to pull something out of their butt...

i have a lg screen rmbp, how serious of an issue is this? can it lead to the image being permeantly burned in? has anyone experience it under normal computing situations? what is apple doing about the problem?

I believe that we are at the same boat. I got mine with IR after one month usage. Since you has already pass 14 days, just asking them to fix it or refund (they probably could only return $ via Apple Gift card).

From this poll, half LG panels have IR issue. I got 3 bad LG panels through this lottery game. Quite disappointed.

Time will tell. You could keep using it since some pros here suggest that it is not a big deal.

Follow their advice.

lol will they give me a replacement (I'm out of the 2 week return period) if I take it to the genius bar or will they just replace the screen
I got replacement as an early adopter. However, I guess they will replace the screen at the meantime. You have to inquire them about this.

Good luck.

Replacement rMBP just arrived at my office. I asked for replacement LAST WEEK on wednesday and it arrived on monday......god lord thats fast.
Projected arrival was 2nd September I might add.

Just did terminal test. LSN SAMSUNG BABY!!!

Colours i'll admit did look as soon as I opened it up to be....different. Can't say better yet but definitely seemed a tad more on the white side.

Doing the test now. gonna hit it for 30 mins or so.

20 minute test. Not a shred of IR. Unlike my LG where I could see faint outlines of the squares.

Should I bring my laptop into the Apple? Will they give me a new replacement one? I have an LG panel and has the image retention problem.

I use my laptop for work so I cannot be without laptop for a while.

I didn't think IPS on laptops was even going to be possible. But here we are. It is amazing to have and still VERY immature.
...you do realize that other laptop manufacturers (IBM, for one) have been making models with IPS screens in them since 2001, right?

I owned both a 2004 and a 2006 ThinkPad model, both of which had 15" UXGA IPS displays. They were CCFL-backlit instead of LED, but they were still gorgeous...oh, and they were matte, too.

This technology has been around -- even in mobile form -- for a long time.

So nobody in this thread has problems with screen tearing, artifacting, flickering and other graphical glitches? Why does it seem that only people from apple forums and youtube are complaining about them. I even get flickering on my screen while watching youtube videos of other peoples rMBP flickering.

I was only referring to mobile form not the tech itself as I have owned desktop IPS for over 10 years. I did not know they were being used by anyone in mobile sector though. Granted I never pay attention too greatly on the PC mobile landscape as all display's I have laid eyes on be it IBM, Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Gateway, all had atrocious display's. Seeming to be afterthoughts. 40º viewing and very dim. But recently I have completely stopped paying attention. And it's not like they are screaming to "LOOK AT THIS" in their ad's either. You'd think they would be touting up the features a bit more than "Intel Inside". I prefer CCFL also. Recently have there been any IPS mobile displays? Better than 30ms response?

If you haven't got any issues, then the WhyTF would you go looking for them?

most would not turn off the energy settings and leave the display on with no sleep on the same page for over an hour to see if there is image retention. under normal use most would never know about this problem. my question is, is there any long term problems and is there any way to know if you are getting a samsung or lg display?

Given up for now

I got my rMBP today after a somewhat tedious month-long wait. Apparently FedEx lost my package sometime last week, but were able to find it over the weekend. Also, after numerous calls to Apple, I found out that University purchases (e.g. purchases made by departments or labs) are processed through a different warehouse and we typically have to wait much longer than others. Anyway, the machine came this morning with an LG screen, which has a definite yellow tint. The process of returning a product can be so tedious for State institutions (due to purchasing rules, etc.), that I've pretty much given up on getting a replacement given that there isn't really any guarantee that the replacement machine is going to be fine. Universities have typically supported Apple products and it is disappointing to see that the support mechanisms for institutional purchases is quite dismal. Anyway - I wanted your opinion on my choices: (a) keep the defective screen and write off (maybe an overstatement) ~$2200 , (b) go through a tedious exchange process and hope for the best, or (c) give up on the rMBP for now and just wait until Apple has figured out their manufacturing process.

I went through 4 LGs and they all had it.

I had 2 Samsung screens and they didn't have the issue. I had to return the first Samsung screen because the Macbook came with a nasty chip and a scratch on the back.

On the first Samsung screen I kept a page that had produced the issue on the LGs for a good 2hrs and I didn't have it.

I ran it again on this current on for 2hrs and then I did another 2hrs with the checkered picture and was unable to produce it.

Do you guys look at your women like this? :D

Anyway, I wonder why anyone would be concerned about this if it doesn't show up under non-testing conditions. Why would anyone care?

It would be useful to gauge this issues, so that people will get an idea of when it would show up. It would be unfortunate if someone returned theirs, when they would have never seen a ghost image.

When I first got mine I noticed an extreme yellow tint. I don't see it now at all. I don't know why, and I don't care.

It may be psychological, or whatever, but ....just saying. I would give it some time.
