Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

We are going to have to start a LG loser support thread. That way, all the Samsung owners can post their luck with pride.

"Hello. My name's Mac, and i'm an LG loser. Is see ghost images. I think I also have a dead pixel. Do dead pixels also have ghosts? he he, I made a funny :)

can't you give your preference... that u need samsung screen instead of LG?
now that it's getting replaced, we end users should have a say :)
because when I compared my RMBP with an LG display to one that had a Samsung display the Samsung display was a lot brighter than my LG display which appeared dim when they were both set to max brightness, that was the only reason why I hope the LG display gets replaced with a Samsung display.

If you go to Apple retail store they'll simply replace your screen with another one (which may or may not be LG).

However, if you call AppleCare, you should be able to request the specific part number for the LG display. Just patiently talk to the tech and try to email them this thread if possible.

I have an LG screen and there is some slight image retension from normal usage (and not just the test pattern) with certain shades of dark gray including Photoshop's default background (which luckily can be changed to a lighter shade).

Interestingly I am unable to duplicate this in Windows. Anybody else with an LG and image retention able to duplicate it in Windows running 2880x1800?

Either way the retention is temporary. I doubt there are long term problems. From the limited research I have performed a similar retention occurs in non-Apple displays too. The higher resolution and much more discriminating detail-orientated (no offense, I'm the same way) fan base have made it more noticeable.

Since I've had the rMBP for almost two months and only notice slight retention on that shade of dark grade in OSX which is rarely encountered and also because its temporary, I think I'll stick with the LG. I found a micro screw underneath one of the keys which is not part of the assembly (meaning it must have fell there in the factory for whatever reason) and I have temporary image retention on slight grays which are rarely encountered. No dead pixels and everything else has been flawless. I've ran stress tests and everything works perfectly. No point in gambling for a replacement even if I could. This is the only laptop I've ever owned that impressed me out of the box. In fact, after it was dropped off at my door I left it in the box for hours since I didn't think it would surprise or excite me in any way and it did. It's a keeper.

It would be interesting to do another poll with Samsung and LG to determine who suffers from scrolling lag and UI lag. Because I do not and have a feeling it's more noticeable on the Samsung. Just a theory/guess

Edit: The retention exists in Windows too. For whatever reason it is less notable but with that dark gray it is definitely there.

New to this forum, but I posted my vote for my LG with bad IR after only 5 minutes.

I know some think the test is not representative of real world use, but I had noticed some artefacts when using Cinema 4D before trying the test. It was only after reading about the issue and doing the test that I realised the annoying artefacts were due to image retention (as I had never seen this with other monitors I had been using including Dell, Alienware and AOC so didn't consider it)

I will get my replacement tomorrow, and I was wondering, does the vote allow multiple votes per user (as I know many of us have had more than 1 MBPr now) :).

The IR retention on my LG panel is horrible. I can fire up XCode, sit there for 15 minutes staring at the code, move onto the next page and still read the last page of code character for character.

The official word from the head "Genius" at the First Colony Mall retail store in Sugar Land, TX is that if he can reproduce it on ANY machine in the store, it is a "normal" display characteristic and that he will refuse to elevate it with engineering.

i just redid the test by blowing this thing up and yeah, my lg shows the same behavior.

Not sure if this is worth getting into the return cycle over but is dissapointing that apple has shipped these displays with varying characteristics.

I ran this test for 15-20 min. and there is absolutely no probs.
I will try to run it for 1 hour and see.

LG screen.

I talked to an AppleCare representative about 5 minute ago and he says the best thing to do to elevate this issue to engineering is to:

1. Call Applecare (they apparently keep track of issues on a board) and
2. Use http://www.apple.com/feedback

I highly recommend that everyone who has an LG display with problems to go do these two things.

Otherwise the company policy of "normal display characteristic" will obscure what is a very obvious LCD design defect.

This issue is only for the Retina displays correct? I have a Samsung screen and no image retention here, but I want to go back to a cMBP as the Retina doesn't suit me for audio production purposes.

I just got my second rMBP in today (first one had a dented body thanks to FedEx abuse) and got lucky with a Samsung display. My damaged rMBP had a LG. There is a clear difference between the two. I can't say I see any ghosting, but the Samsung is noticeably brighter and has far less backlight bleeding. I really thought the issue was overblown until I saw both side by side. After seeing both, no way would I accept a rMBP with the LG screen.

Tempted to return my LG after reading this.

haha damnit apple. why, why why do you need to have 2 displays with varying characteristics.

Sounds like you should definitely return yours then.

Also.....stupid question but can IR issues become smaller over time?

I've been checking my screen a bit today even though I'm returning this because I thought hey why not.
Anyways IR issues I had previously noticed more easily like Dock Icons etc against the dark grey background well they appear to be burning in considerably less than yesterday.

Also....suppose the new rMBP arrived but I decided I'd changed my mind and wanted to hang onto this unit what happens then? Just refuse delivery and have it sent back to Apple and as such its still a brand new unit so no skin off their nose?

Not saying I will of course. New is better than a 2 week old unit :p and a more recent manufacture date and the *chance* of a sammy screen.

Any chance of an update on what you decided?

I've got replaced 5 rMBP - yes 5 !!!

1) The first one I got had a perfect screen (Samsung) with no problems and the brightness was perfect. The screen was actually so good that I now regret I returned it. Sadly it was making click noise on the right side (body, just under the Power button) which it shouldn't. The store replaced it because of faulty construction.

2) Was damaged in the box (I guess it was damaged by shipping company)

3) LG panel - a very bad display (image burn, ghosting...).

I talked to Apple Customer Service and they told me to go back to the store and ask for replacement again. The store called Apple and Apple told them to replace it and that they would accept returns of faulty rMBP.

4-5) So the Store Manager and I opened 2 more rMBP (the last two in stock). Both had issues. The white was yellow compared to the demo model at the store. One of them was LG and the other one was Samsung. So I guess LG panels are not only the ones with issues. BTW. the demo model which had a perfect display was LG.

Now I am waiting for Apple to ship more rMBP to the store so we can open more boxes and see.... :(

I just received my replacement mbp retina. It has an LG screen. I performed the image retention test and it clearly shows image retention. I just put in the order for a third one and now I am in the process of returning the 1st one. When the 3rd one arrives I will replace the second one and so forth. I guess I'll just enjoy using a brand new laptop every 14 days. Whatever.

By the way, I am personally under the belief that all LG screen sold in the retina macbook pro have image retention. I think some just don't have the eyes to notice it which is fine.

Happy non-lasting christmas... :p

I just talked to Apple today and they're sending me my first replacement rMBP (I'm within 14 days). I was wondering about your exact situation: if the second one also has bad image retention (mine is very noticeable during regular use, no checkerboard grey screen test necessary), is there a new 14 day clock to return it? Or after the first return is the process different somehow? Hopefully my replacement will be issue free and this will never apply to me, but I'd like to know just in case. Thanks for any light you can shed on the process.

At least Apple is doing advance returns for all of us. Hopefully the losses from all these returns is getting someone's attention...

Compared two macbook retinas today at the apple store and the samsung screen had a noticeably brighter screen. For some reason the workers Ive talked to knew nothing about apple using different screen manufacturers...

I didn't notice the problem until recently (or maybe it has just gotten worse) so I'm out of the 14 day period. Is it still possible to get an exchange?

Honestly, that's a big reason I decided to do something about it now, instead of waiting until there was a more reliable solution than the screen lottery. One more return is one more reason for them to find a solution.
