I have ordered:
One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
3GB (3x1GB)
640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n

Pretty standard, still doubting whether i need it or not.

Well it says it gonna be delivered by the 16th or something, so i have alot of time to cancel the order if i change my mind :)

Most users seem to be going with the ATI Radeon and its making me wonder if thats something I should go with too.

Are you planning on using your machine with graphic intensive apps? If not, whats the rationale behind going with it?

uh just gaming :D

Im one of those wierdos who likes doing day to day stuff in osx, then goes into XP for gaming :)

ah, that explains the

The (tenuous) justification i gave myself is that its 'only' £400 more than the top end imac and that i will be able to sell it and retain most of its value in a year or so. :)

I think unless you are gonna be playing games or doing graphics intensive things, the GT120 will probably suffice.

I have just ordered exactly the same as you. :)

I got the 4870 as I will probably be gaming in XP/Vista.

I'm OK with waiting for the 2GB DIMM's. I'd rather not have to throw away 1GB DIMM's if I ever increase my memory.
When the time comes, would you upgrade 4GB Ram at a time to eventually end up with 32GB? Is it possible to add 4GB to the existing 6 x 1GB's?

My Baby

I sold my 2.4 GHZ C2D iMac in January and have been using a MBP from work since then.

I ordered the stock quad-core machine and just added a wi-fi card (I really can't believe they aren't stock on a $2400+ machine...)

Is the GT120 going to be inadequate for Windows gaming? I think the likely culprits are Unreal Tournament 3 and F.E.A.R 2. I don't expect to crank out huge framerates in Crysis but I'm wondering if I should have ponied up the extra cash...

The new quad-core is only $100 more than the last one correct?

the gt 120 is a 9500gt, it will definitely be the bottleneck for gaming, but should be able to run the games. Although probably a lot less than your monitors native resolution and a with a bunch of the eye candy turned down/off.

Upgrade Path

I'll give the GT120 a try and see what it's like. When I decide to upgrade do I have to use the 4870 from Apple or can I purchase it from someone else?

Ordered the 2.26 yesterday with 4870, airport, applecare, and wireless keyboard. :) I'm excited.

Out of curiosity, are all you folks getting applecare? This is my first time getting it...

unless hackers can find a way to modify the regular 4870 you will have to buy apple's version, which is also the only version that has mini displayport if you care about the 24" LED screen. Apple's 4870 is $350 stand alone ($200 to upgrade a system from a gt 120), don't expect apple's price of $350 to ever go down.

Went for the 'cheap' option and ordered the low end quad with the ATI graphics card and a 24" Cinema Display. Arrives on the 17th apparently.

This is my first Mac, so I'm both excited and a little nervous...

RobP

Rob, you have plenty of people here who are willing to help if you have questions. Don't forget to hit up apple's site for tutorials and the like so you can have an idea of what you're doing before your machine arrives. I think it's apple.com/mac. good luck :D

I just changed my order because of the backlog on the 2 gb ram sticks.

Here is the new plan:

2 x 2.26 ghz
6 gb ram
ATI Radeon card
640 gb disk
mini to vga adapter
apple care

80 gb Intel SSD from newegg
3 x 300 GB velociraptor drives
16 gb ram from macsales.com

With ADC select membership, overnite shipping, and sales tax, the grand total is $5,189 and change.

ETA is 3/12 to 3/16

This thing should be smokin' fast. :D

Ordered a base quad 2.66 with Airport, nothing more. Will pop in my old Seagate drive from an iMac and a new Seagate 7200.12 1TB, some Crucial sweetness when money returns. Not sure about the screen to be used, but definitely not an Apple Mirror™.

Changed to ATI

I'm kind of glad I rethought my purchase. I will save about $130 by ordering the system with the ATI instead of buying the kit at a later date... AH WHAT A MONEY PIT!

Ships: Mar 24
Delivers: Mar 28

And a 30" display and software.... BROKE

Ordered, used Apple partner discount, arrives March 10/12:

- Dual 2.93
- 6GB (6x1GB) which I plan to sell (4x2GB would have delayed shipment 3 weeks)
- 640GB HD (I'll be replacing with my VelociRaptors I had in my previous Jan08 2.8 Mac Pro)
- Radeon 4870
- AppleCare

Using existing 30" Cinema Display.

Sold my Jan08 2.8 Mac Pro w/10 GB & 8800 GT, nice resale value.

I have 16 GB on the way from OWC ($289). I'll bench 12GB vs. 16 GB and see which is faster. One would expect triple channel to be faster, but I see that Apple's published benchmark fine print says they used 8x1GB for the tests.

I'll be adding a second optical drive soon as I figure out what the primary one is. Presumably it's SATA this time around. Likely another Optiarc.

I run Vista x64 90% of the time, primarily Sony Vegas, Photoshop CS4 x64, TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress.

Well since there isn't one yet...
I just ordered mine, base octo 2.26 with wifi:D
I think it will be worth the $$:D

and yes I know I could have got an old 2.8 octo for what I am paying

but if this is similar in performance to the old 3.2 in at least a few respects, then it is money well spent IMHO

Order status updates:
ships still saying 4-6 days? (so... early next week? as it has been 3 so far)
Delivers: 11th -18th
