Ordered and waiting...

Ordered entry level 2.66 quadcore Mac Pro - only option added was an airport card - Delivery projected March 13-19.

Extra HD (2 Samsung spinpoint 1TB drives) and RAM (2gbx3) from third party vendors, Lagoom and OWComputing respectively.

Thank God for the educational discount - but the Xeon 5500's would have been real nice....

My wife is always telling me that I just don't get it, and she's right, but I have a stash somewhere else, but anyway, why didn't you get a Xeon 5500 then? I know I'm missing something here.

Yeah mine is at the Northampton hub for TNT. Not sure if it will arrive tomorrow or Wednesday. :D

I'm a touch behind you then. Last update was a second 'Cork' update at 19:45 last night. Shipment in Transit.

Have already bribed my GF to stay in tomorrow (her day off) and wait for it to come. Huzzah.

I ordered the Quad 2.66 with 6GB and the 4870.

Basically I am a gamer who also enjoys photography and got a new HD Camcorder (Sony SR10) at christmas.

So my main usage will be lots of TF2 and Empire Total War in Windows, plus lots of Lightroom 2 and Video Editing in OSX.

My current Core 2 Duo (E6600) was painful to encode with in Windows - it would take 2.5 hours to encode 10-15 minutes worth of footage to to 720p. I installed OSX on the same hardware (lots of things not working of course as badly planned hackintosh) but the same footage, using the same (yet unsupported/hacked-to-work) hardware and software would take half the time! So then I was desperate to get a good mac pro.

I was this || close to buying the 2,8 octo a month ago but the 8800 was not going to cut it for me in gaming, so I am glad I waited in that respect, but I am paying about £300 more now for a machine that's only a quad :( with the upside being I have a very capable graphics card with the new model. I could afford the octo if I sold a load of stuff, but having seen the new baseline octo's benchmarks I don't think its worth the sacrifices I would have to make, and I certainly cant afford something like the 2.93 octo. Seeing as 50% of my usage is gaming, the 2.6 quad is probably the best bang for my meagre bucks, though it will hurt to know my video encoding could be much faster, especially once snow leapord arrives.

Still its my first real mac, I have run hackintosh on both my home PC and a dell latitude for some time so looking forward to not needing to constantly hack kexts and stuff to get things working all the time :)

Shocked to see my delivery date is 1st April (I ordered 2 days ago) but hoping it comes early as some other posters seem to be getting theirs when they weren't expecting them for another 3-6 days :)

Awesome! I'm sure you'll be happy with the 2.26. I just have a need for more speed vs. more cores for my profession. The new Mac Pro is awesome! I'm on my 2.26 right now.

Ordered mine last week. Won't be arriving until next week. This week inbetween won't be any fun at all! ;)

No, Gainestown, man. ;) Brush up on your terminology. Mine's an eight-core.:p

Hey, Tallest! Just curious, after that excellent thread about the coming of the 09's and all, and then changing your mind, and changing it again. Was it information overload? Or a love/hate relationship w :apple:?

Congrats on the new machine.:D

Thought I'd be able to get it, didn't think I'd be able to get it anymore, think I'll be okay with it again. :D

Pretty simple. College screws with your mind, dun'nit? :p

After spending days looking at benchmarks and various '08/'09 comparisons, my head was about to explode; I'm sick of looking at numbers, percentages and sodding bar charts.

I've decided to go for the Octo 2.26GHz, with an HD 4870 and the standard RAM/HDD. I'll be updating the RAM to 12GB (6 x 2GB) and adding a second HDD for Windows myself.

I'm currently learning Maya, Blender, Java, C++, C# and doing a little web design. I'm sure the system I've gone for will run these applications perfectly well and last me for a good couple of years.

Yah you have a MONSTER coming too!! HAHA

Do you think I was out of my mind to order the Quad 2.93?

Any configuration of this beast is dang expensive, so you have to be a little out of your mind regardless. ;) For my config, I could have gotten away with one of the cheaper octos, sure, but I'm just ridiculous that way.

The Quad 2.93 is a powerhouse and I'm sure it'll be of great use for many years to come! Congrats!

Pasted from my order form!! :)

I JUST got an email saying its been shipped and should arrive on or before the 30th.

It says:
24th March - "In Transit to Customer - Shipment on Schedule" hope it means tomorrow or something :p.

Got the 3 year applecare as well.

Total: £2,250.55.

With the HE discount ....very happy now :).

Mostly going to use it for browsing/msn and to print faster.

Just kidding...but about the printing faster, thats what some pc shop owner told a friend when the Pentium 200MMX was out. That he should get it cause you print faster .

That reminds me of a coworker back in the old Windows 95 days. He kept getting an "Out of Memory" error. He swore it was happening because he was typing in upper case and it used more memory! :p

Just ordered my baseline quad 2.66 with 6Gb of RAM and im really excited about it. To be honest, being a webdesigner a high-end iMac would probably be enough for most of my work. My business partner didnt wanted a all in one, first i got upset about it but now im actually thankful. :)

Until now i was stressing on a Dell Dual Core with vista installed so this will be a huge step-up for me. hooray!!

I've been waiting for this thread and post since last Autumn (and even more since January when I first stumbled upon TallestSkill's speculation thread), but here finally goes. Just ordered this from the local Apple retailer across the street:

2.26GHz Octo
12GB RAM (6x2)
Radeon 4870 HD
Airport
640MB + 1TB disks
Applecare

Will supposedly take a few weeks to arrive. That should cover my main system needs for a few years with minimal upgrades.

I have to say this was one of the toughest computer related choices I've made so far. Usually I have a clear vision of options, be it for me or for someone else. In this case I spent days pondering quad vs. octo, iMac vs. Pro and so on. In the end I was willing to wait but I got the green light and there's already a next assignment waiting for my current system, so...
