Let's get back on topic, thanks. Is there a projected Gainestown production start date? We can extrapolate the release from that.

yeah, doesn't anyone have connections to intel here? that's the real question. We need a more elaborate spy network and all this futile theorizing can be put to rest.

I think until Intel start telling parters dates we aren't going to see anything, and it appears even the board manufacturers don't know right now. Maybe there is more going on behind the scenes.

I think anyone who is waiting is best to basea purchasing decision on a March 30th official date (as late as Intel can go if there are no production problems) and May 25th Mac Pro release (8 weeks after).

If I were going to put money on it I'd say Tuesday 12th of May or Thursday 14th of May for the new Mac Pro. Maybe we should start a pool ;)

1. PUNCTUATION.
2. Why would a case change warrant an upgrade for you? If that's all you care about, you don't really understand the true purpose of a Mac Pro.
3. What's wrong with the cheese grater, anyway?
4. I would not be surprised if none of the Nehalem Mac Pro's graphics cards work with previous models.

1. Didn't know this was class and who cares
2. Because you can't tell the difference between the new or old Mac Pro just by looking at it, most people here thinks that the new Nehalem Mac Pro is GOD and I have the money to buy the Nehalem Mac Pro but as for me and NOT everyone else why spend more money on the New Mac Pro if it's gonna to look the same as the current Mac Pro, If you already own a Mac Pro, You may say the Nehalem Mac Pro is faster and I will agree with you there but it will still look the same but if the case changes and have better performance then is worthy of a upgrade for ME and if not now I hope by next year Sandy Bridge Mac Pro will have a new case design so that it will look different from the past Mac Pro's, this is just my thing, it probably won't do it for you but everybody different.
3. There's nothing wrong with the current design, it just that it's time for a change, it's been the same sense the G5 era and I would like to see a new case design and at the same time have better performance.
4. I beg a differ because if Apple made 8800GT to work on 07 Mac Pro, i'm sure Apple are going to make Display-Port video cards to work on early 2008 Mac Pro, unless Apple makes adapters so that us 07-08 Mac Pro's owners can enjoy using the LED ACD.

People who read care. This isn't texting. This isn't instant messaging.

I'm curious who you're trying to impress by having a computer that looks cool. With the Mac Pro, it's not about how it looks, it's about what it does. Anyone who shows enough interest to ask the specs deserves to know them. Anyone who only cares about what a computer looks like won't care about the difference between Gainestown and Harpertown.

You're sure? Really? They were forced into making it compatible because nVidia couldn't make a driver for their own card. I don't want people to have to buy a whole new computer to use a new graphics card, but I'm not holding my breath for compatibility.

I'm not an expert and NEVER claim I was, second I said probably looks won't do it for everyone but for ME it does because I already own a Mac Pro but if you don't have a Mac Pro then it will be a worthy upgrade for a new buyer, but I do like to see a new case

I have friends already purchase a Mac Pro but can't buy a 23- inch ACD sense Apple discontinue that module so either my friends are force to buy either a 30 inch which my friends can't afford paying an extra $1800 for a display or get a 20 inch which is way to small, So either Apple makes adapters or we can purchase an upgrade video card with display-port for older Mac Pro and I guess we will see what happens because unless you work for Apple i'm not taking your word for it.

You know, you could always buy two 20 inch monitors and use dual displays. After all Mac OS X is much better at dual displays than, say, Windows. Moreover, you could always buy third party (ie, non-Apple) monitors, which tend to be slightly cheaper (and I mean the good IPS panels, not the crappy TN ones).

Anyway...

I too am one of the people waiting for the Nehalem Mac Pros. In my honest opinion, I think that it wouldn't be bad for Apple to release a new case for the new Mac Pros, because, after all, as several people have mentioned, the current design has been in use for a long time. It would seem reasonable that Apple should release new Mac Pro cases to
1) match the look of the new Apple Cinema Displays, which would in turn match the look of the current iMacs
2) match the look of the entire Apple product range including the iMac, the Macbook, and the Macbook Pro.

As such, I believe that Apple would release a new Mac Pro case with elements signature of the current Apple products, such as aluminum construction and black glass borders or something.

Nonetheless, I find it ridiculous that people would base their buying decision on the exterior case of a computer. After all, the Mac Pro would spend most of its time under the table and the user would spend most of the time
1) looking at the screen, not the case
2) using the computer, in which the performance of the computer matters significantly more than the case design.

Aren't those things in production already ?
They're just not being sold officially (starting Q1 '09), Intel stocking up.
Maybe Apple got a few 100k pieces from Intel already :D

"Initial configurations of 2P-capable Xeon Nehalem-based CPUs are in production now, we were told, with the processors going on sale in Q1 2009. However, they'll be little more than incumbent Core i7s with a second QPI link for inter-CPU communication, based around the Tylersburg/Gainestown platforms."

That's the only place I've seen saying Xeons were in production. Intel's CEO Paul Otellini himself said production would start in January. Eitherway Apple are unlikely to get preferential treatment on this and we'd probably have heard a date by now if it was close.

I'd be suprised if Intel weren't producing them now, but I don't see why they would say they weren't when they have already given an idea of when the processors are comming. They normally aren't so quiet on processor releases so maybe they are having problems.

This is the first I've seen on this as well.

Perhaps it meant the boards rather than the actual CPU's?

Can you link me to that please ?

It was a comment made at Oracle OpenWorld a few months ago, I didn't bookmark the article I read on it though. He was quoted as saying "production will begin in January" or itr might have been "Q1 2009" thinking about it.

In my optimistic hopes, perhaps he meant 1Q FY09 instead of calendar year 09. It would jive more with the November timeframe. And it would give us new Mac Pros that much faster :)

However, realistically, if he meant FY09 he would have almost certainly said it as such. doh.

I think we are probably not going to see a Mac Pro less than two months before we get solid rumours of release dates for the Xeon 5500 series and maybe as many as three. That's what I'd be going off if I was deciding whether to buy now or not anyway.

I hope you enjoy your new Mac pro when it's release but for me sense I already own a Mac Pro and i'm waiting for the next Mac Pro Sandy Bridge Mac Pro when it's released sometime in 2010 and I hope by then Apple will change the design of the case, A case re-design made not do it for everyone when deciding to purchase a Mac Pro but for me it does, I look at my current Mac Pro all the time because it sets on top of my desk, so if I buy the Nehalem Mac Pros it will look the same as my current one but if Apple does changes the case for Nehalem Mac Pro then i will buy one, money is no issue with me but that's just me and not no one else, Can't wait to see your unboxing Mac Pro when you get it. But I wish Apple will make adapters for the LED Cinema Displays or at least have capadable Mini Display-Port video cards to work on older Mac Pro which i'm sure they will because Apple done it before with the Geforce 8800GT, My friends like to keep everything Apple related when buying displays for their computers and my friends are looking around town to find a 23-inch Cinema Display i'm sure some store still carries the 23 inch ACD but my friends had no luck so far.

Nice thread

Since I do not own a MP as of yet , reading threads like this and others is entertaining and informative. I have been shopping around for a good deal on MP's and have found some good and some horrible.

Regarding the Nehalem and me, for what I am going to use the MP for its not necessarily worth the wait , but time will tell.

What does concern me is the graphics cards in these things, as I was reading an article on the ATI 3870 and its "the latest and greatest" but the fan noise is ridiculous. The Nvidia 8800GT has good reviews but has not been updated in a while.

As for monitors and the ACD's sorry there is no way in heck I would throw away good money on a monitor that is outdated in my opinion. Comparing the specs of a ACD to the newer monitors out today, it seems that Apple is set in keeping things just the way they are, except for the 24" LED which was probably experiamental to see how things would go

I'll wait for the MW and Keynote and see what Phil has to say in his Hour & a Half speech. Cant be that much coming.

Slightly off topic but the best was reading about the iPhone Nano and how it was NOT specific to AT&T now that should really throw a curve ball to people.

Missing those 86,400 pixels

The 15-inch MacBook Pro display features 1440x900-pixel resolution (or a total of 1,296,000 pixels).
The last PowerBook G4 that Apple ever made featured 1440x960-pixel resolution (1,382,400 pixels).
That’s a loss of 86,400 pixels, and you can tell the difference.
Does anyone know if Apple ever intends to make a sharper display for the 15-inch MacBook Pro?
I know the website talks about connecting your MacBook Pro to a 24-inch display, but the whole idea of having a laptop is portability.
Barring the unlikely introduction of a 24-inch (or 30-inch) display that can be folded like a napkin for carrying around with you, one is left with the choice of either remaining with one’s trusty PowerBook G4 or reluctantly accepting a tradeoff.
