So far we're still in the caughting period, the relationship is going well, though I do wish i opted for the 3.2 instead!! Oh well, I think when the times comes... I'll just swap out the slugish CPU's for something with a little more kick

It will be cheaper to sell an 8 core 2.8GHz and buy a Nehalem Mac Pro than have got the 3.2GHz upgrade. Probably not too much difference than buying new processors either.

Absolutely. :D

Then add in the advantage of a warranty on the new machine, and you didn't have to build it (assuming that isn't someones hobby). :p

The Skulltrail II is kind of interesting to me, but because I don't use dual cards it would be more for "PERFORMANCE!!" more than actual application... As opposed to the X58 which definitely does not exceed my needs :p

Same here. ;)
I just need a really fast workstation, not multiple graphics cards. I'm not into gaming. :p

I'm hoping for an updated version of the ASUS Z7S WS as well, which is very similar to the Skulltrail. A decent alternative, IMO.

Now if only more information would release... :D

Anyone got any theories/mockups/leaked images on what the new Mac Pro's might look like? I've never been a fan of the G5 generation casing, i hope they change it!

Here's to waiting!

I've been following the MacPro rumors pretty closely now for months and I don't think there have been any hints at all of any changes to the MacPro chassis. At this point in time, there doesn't seem to be any reason to believe that Apple will make any drastic changes to the look of the MacPro.

To be fair there haven't been any rumors at all about the exterior of the Mac Pro. I would imagine they'd change it a little bit if not a lot, it sure has been a while.

All of the speculation about the guts of the thing is pretty much set, the only thing that's up in the air is specific parts.

And of course the obvious: The actual sale/shipping date for customers.:)

I have been thinking about what Apple might do for while. My thoughts/deams

CPU: nahalem (any speed)
the internal memory controler it just huge and they will probably put the server version in to allow all cores to talk to each other directly

Memory: DDR3
any fast memory will do

GPU: Nvidia 260 at least hoping on 280. Please Apple, ditch ATI as they are a substandard part in both quality and power.

Case: probably the same
the MP case so just so amazing in design, how could top it?

As I have been following Apple for a while it seems that they only upgrade if it is sizable. the new micor architecture for i7 warrants a new MP. when it comes out I will have to look into it. I have had my MP for less than I year but coming from a PC background I am always looking to upgrade :)

We are in the same boat bro. :apple::apple::apple:

We're coming up on what, 6 years of that same exterior design? Besides, the iMac and the laptops have all been redesigned since the Intel switch. At first they wanted to keep the cases the same to help people understand that it's "The same Mac, just a different processor.". But clearly now they see it's time to move on. It's just the Pro and the Mini still in the PPC shells, and we already saw a Mini update is coming. Who wants to bet it's going to have a new case with tapered edges? Look at it and the old MBP, then look at the new MBP. I think it's pretty obvious where this is going.

I've got no idea what they'd do with the Pro's design though. Maybe move the the board tray to the left-facing design? More of the standard ATX layout? Hopefully get the PSU back to the bottom. What benefit you're supposed to get from putting it at the top of the case has always escaped me. The thing needs more hard drives, that's for sure. And I'm still a little perplexed as to where the heat from a single-slot graphics card cooler is supposed to go in the current design. I also think the case should be a little bigger. For a machine of that power and cost, it's not very long or wide.

CPU: Nahalem architecture is coming. :D Xeon 5500 series, likely the X5550, given the cost ($958/1000pcs). (More expensive than Harpertowns were at release, $851/1000pcs).
Mem: DDR3-1333 ECC :D
GPU: I don't think we'd see the 260 in the base. :p As for options, we'll have to wait and see. ;)
Case: The internals would need to be redesigned to accommodate the new hardware. The exterior, I've no idea. Maybe, given it's age. :p

I would imagine that the exterior will see some design changes like the MBP. While they certainly look different, they're obviously the same family.

It's that time again. Intel has just "named" their new line, called Core i7. Will you be waiting to pick one up or can you just not wait anymore? Why? What do you hope comes with it? Graphics cards? Card readers, BluRay? Does a new ACD sound good to you? If this thread actually goes anywhere I'll try to maintain a running list of people who are waiting for it.

Like everyone else, my fingers are crossed for January.

Man my fingers have been crossed for two months they starting to get sore haha, I really hope it is jan some people say late march i think that is silly pushing it to the last possible day in the 1st quarter... they probably just bought the 2008 mac pro recently and trying to have a bit of peace of mind about it hahaha. COMON JANUARY! :D

I don't know about quality, but ATI beats NVIDIA in performance.

+1 either you're an nvidia fanboy or haven't got the real facts. talk to anyone with the 8 series problem in macbook pros then get back to us about quality.

ATI still have better drivers then nvidia and apple are basically in the bed with them

My 8 series still works after 14 months with no sign of it giving up yet...

I still wish apple would have both a mid range and top range card from both sides so you could choose which one.

I'd rather have a 4870 1gb than a 260.

But yes im in the waiting lists too now :D

ATI and new MacPro

I agree with the above, there is only speculation as to the case. But think how little changed on the exterior with the powerpc going to the macpro. I think apple will make some changes but not much on the outside. The inside will definetly be nehalem server parts with 2p setup. As for the memory, the specs are already out, DDR3 ECC probably at 1333, and later 1600 when intel releases those parts. Similar to what happened with the MacPro.

As for ATI and nVidia, that is a whole new area open to debate. ATI makes great quality parts, and in fact their notebook parts have been much more reliable than nVidia as of late. Look at the mess and financial writeoffs nVidia has been giving out for their failing 8600M parts. But on the Pro side, the Quadro cards pretty much rule this area for now. ATI let the FIREGL cards lag behind, but you never know. As for support of Mac core graphics, ATI drivers and architecture are way faster. Their 3870 beats the pants of the current 8800GT. Lets just see what comes out next. My only wish/request is stop giving us Mac users last generation parts, and offer the latest and greatest. In this respect, offer us the HD4870 or HD4870x2 and the GeForce 260/280/295 parts for desktop users, and the latest FIREFL or Quadro FX5800 for Pro users.

Peace,
Noushy

Actually, March is an optimistic estimate; January is almost certainly an impossibility.

It has been announced that the processors would be available in the 1st quarter of 2009, meaning January through March. Recent history shows that Apple can release a new MacPro about eight weeks after the processor becomes available, Therefore, March is about the earliest reasonable estimate. And what if the processors aren't available until March? Then we're looking at May.

Hey, I'd love to be wrong. I'm limping around on a Quicksilver G4 waiting for this. The reality of the situation is that anything earlier than March is extremely unlikely.

January is impossibly optimistic. It won't happen.

May is looking realistic IMO, as I don't expect Intel to ship until the last day of March to meet the Q1 '09 estimate. ;) :p

Not so according to this review:

http://hothardware.com/Articles/Nvidia-QuadroFX-4800-15-GB-Workstation-Graphics-Card/

Also in regards to the case update, so far Apple have changed the iMac, Mac Book and Mac Book Pro (Which was also using a 6 year old design)
So I would look at their current range to see what the new case will look like. Different but not vastly so.
