white front would be a big mistake. it means that apple has no interest in actually using power saving benefits of OLED screens. why? on a black front, the background of the notches can be permanently black which 1. saves power and 2. provides uniformity and design principle.

Just that notch being black won't save that much battery....

Even if Apple releases a Dark Theme for the black bezel, do you really believe Apple will make the Dark theme last 10% longer than the default theme?

Apple: White theme > 5 hours of battery life
Oh try our Dark theme and get 6 hours of battery life!

Hmmm is this a good marketing strategy..... No

$5 says it has a white bezel.
$1,000 says it doesn't.

The notch corners being black saves incredible battery life and especially when you consider the fact that it is 100% useless being colored and it looks unbelievably terrible. There's no chance Apple does it I don't care about Gurman's report.

The recent video of the fake iPhone with the notch in the display is the best example of why Apple won't do it. Look at that thing in the dark. My god is it distracting hahaha. It literally draws your eyes to it, it's so ****ing terrible words can't describe.

This looks good … but generic. The classic iPhone look (with home button) was/is not only iconic, but instantly recognizable, from the original model up to the 7. This looks almost exactly like an S8/V30. That's why I believe Apple will indeed embrace the notch instead of hiding it.

That’s exactly my line of thought. Without the home button Apple needs a design cue that is immediately recognizable and can be depicted graphically in packaging and advertising. Symmetrical bezels would fade into a saturated smartphone landscape where only the most aware eyes would know an iPhone from Samsung Galaxy.

With so little bezel... what's the point of additional colors anymore?

It made sense when there was a substantial chin and forehead (even though I've never liked the white-front iPhone)

But black bezels will look better against the OLED screen... and there's not much bezel in the first place.

They could make a sun-bleached white where the white has a slight yellow tint as if it were out in the sun for a while. o_O

If the camera does form a cutout, which I at this point I am still not seeing how it could possibly be usable in another thread... it makes sense for the cutout to remain black while the borders and back would be white.

I like the notch. Looks like it could become iconic like the home button. The blacked out top and bottom bezels are ugly and make the screen look smaller. People need to embrace change.

Apple doesn't give two shiits about the energy savings from OLED. If they did, they would have made a real dark mode. I knew they wouldn't do that to begin with. Making a software change is one thing (Apple is open to that), but making a hardware change, for the sake of taking advantage of a minuscule savings in battery life? Not happening. The only thing that people have to point to is the Apple watch (black bezel), and I see that as being a different story because 1) Watches don't usually have white bezels, and 2) They will not change what they've done with the iPhones in the past.

Be prepared to meet your worst nightmare. The ears will haunt you at night, and the notch will look deep into your soul, questioning your $1000 payment.

Like I've said before, I for one, will be jailbreaking to fix Apple's new design.

Not a chance, but if we're making fake bets at least go high

You're exactly correct. It would look beyond hideous and Apple's design team simply isn't that stupid.

You do understand that the video you linked is fake right? Please tell me you know that...

But I'm glad you linked that because while that video is fake, it shows how embarrassingly AWFUL the notch is especially in the dark. Lmao look at that piece of trash. Your eyes are IMMEDIATELY drawn to the notch due to the screen being white on either side of it. That video is the best example of why it cannot happen.

I'm well aware it's likely fake, I linked it to show you what your future iPhone experience is going to be like. I'm not overly butt hurt about it, even before launch (like you are), but it is what it is. Apple named those areas ears. If they were really planning on eliminating them/making them static black areas (only to provide status bar info), do you really think they would have so much information about them?

Apple is going all out this year, and the ugly ears are one of those endeavors.

Have so much information about them? What does that even mean? Lol

Because they call them 'ears' they're colored? I think not...they're 'ears' because they are two areas at the top on either side of the sensors and earpiece, wherein status elements can go, being removed from the main display area.

Also, that video isn't 'likely' fake, it's very obviously fake, for numerous reasons, and I'm not even talking about the ears.

Honest question for you and I hope you will answer honestly: Watch that video again. When the app is opened to the white background filling the ears, are you not drawn to the notch at the top? Does it not distract from the experience of viewing the app?

Excusing the shoddy photoshop skills, this is how much it will suck to watch anything on though.

White background it looks passable, as soon as you swap it it black....

If and when one comes out for iOS 11.

So you're one of those jailbreaking is doomed people too then. Yes, it may take a while. I don't mind waiting 4-6 months for a phone I'll probably have for 3+ years.

I will probably be pretty annoyed with stock until then though, especially with all these new gestures that I already don't like.

Cool your jets, son. I never said that. I've been jailbreaking since the original 74-step jailbreak.

But the fact is that private jailbreaks are much more prevalent now than public ones. The monetary rewards from Apple and security companies for exploits are very tempting.

Yeah definitely are. Big ole ugly notch. Everyone has been saying that since May. It's going to look worse in the dark, everyone knows that. With a white, or black bezel.

Now your last question, does it distract from the experience of viewing the app? This is the question Apple has decided to answer on their own, despite it's appearance. They will say no.

I also will say no, weakly. At first it does, and when you're looking at the status bar, or where the "back" arrow would be, etc. However the real content of the screen (below the status bar and arrows) I would say it's not impacted. This is one of those things you'll get used to after using it for a week or so.

I still think it sucks, but Apple will simply ignore that, since it's not a big enough deal for them to change their plans over.

Honestly, that looks the same as all the previous white bezel's to me. I've never liked any of them for that reason. This one is better than the ones in the past, because there is less bezel.

I don't believe in end all be all conclusions. If there was a reason for jailbreaking to begin with, there will continue to be a reason. The game is rotating, not ending. It will probably be longer between jailbreaks, as it's been the last year or two, but jailbreaking will still be around. I mentioned previously, yes small time devs (who used to do individual exploits, etc) are now being replaced by big time dev teams (mainly chinese) who will be providing the tools from here on.

Once this phone is released, there will be even more reason for a jailbreak, since they'll be making all these major software changes such as gestures, and the ears.

only a week until we know what they do with it.

i hope they still have some surprises left. they did have some even with the iphone 7.

i'm also interested to see if and how they are using a possible always on function with the oled display.

I can't understand why some are saying they are going white for the first time after looking at their screen shot...

What is the difference between that and the current phones? There's a reason why u didn't go white the last couple of iPhones.

Mostly everything is going to look better with a black bezel. Think about watching videos...
I’m sorry, but this is one of the most overrated arguments. I’m on my third white iPhone and second white iPad. Never once have I thought to myself that the bezels are distracting when watching movies. And I know I’m not the only one.
