Personally used to get "Nice monitor, but where is the computer?" all the time with my strawberry iMac.

Got that when I received my first iMac. Some lass thought it was just the monitor. But when I brought out my Apple LCD monitor, my girlfriend's son thought that was the entire computer. Now that would have been cool, but no, not yet. But it IS a great looking monitor.

Too Friendly?

When I asked a PCeer why she didn't like Macs, she actually told me, in all seriousness, "because they are too friendly." I have actually heard this several times...like they equate friendliness with uselessness.

Apple needs to start advertising with the express purpose of EDUCATING people on the reality of Macs and OSX. Apple will not grow as long as people believe that Macs can't open JPEGs (someone told me this once).

Here's another one...

I've really enjoyed reading through this thread, as most of the stories are totally congruent with my experience.

I was a PC user for about 20 years (Linux and every flavor of Windows from 3.0 on) and have recently switched to a powerbook running X. As we all know, there are no more vociferous Mac Evangelists than recently-converted PC users. So I am probably guilty of crowing a bit too loud about how great I think Macs are.

I work in a research lab, which means (as many of you probably know) dealing with chronic funding shortages. As a result, our lab computers are antiques. We have an ancient 9300 running MacOS 8.6 hooked up to our microscope, which is the system we use for capturing images. (It ain't broke, so we don't fix it...besides, we have no budget for new computers).

There's a graduate student here who is always bashing Macs. A typical 'Macs Suck!' type who knows less about computers than my two-year-old, but who nonetheless feels entirely justified in bashing Macs because the antiques she has to use in the lab aren't as good (in her opinion) as her brand-new $4000 laptop running XP Pro. I suspect that some of her Mac-bashing is directed at me, because of my well-known affection for Macs.

The event I found most revealing occured last week. The image capture software (on the old Mac) allows export of image sequences as movies. She found that, although these movies play fine on all the macs (old and new) as well as on our PC running Linux, they won't play on her expensive XP laptop. "See! This proves it: Mac's Suck!" she proclaimed.

Unh? Because an antique mac can do things your brand-new, top-of-the-line, PC laptop can't you conclude "Macs Suck"? I don't get it.

I eventually found her the codecs she needed to see the movies on her PC (because I'm such a nice guy), but I was tempted to just let her wallow in her ignorance.

Cheers

Since Tazo encouraged me to post, :D I will give my question.
"Why do you people use macs here? The entire business world uses peecee's"

This was said to me while I struggled to hook the pc laptop up to an overhead projector for a presentation. Of course the person didn't bother arriving early to allow set up time. BTW, I used a powerbook to check the setup while this person was standing there and it was fine .

The problem was their laptop (Win2000). I told them it was probably a hardware issue with their machine (bad video port).

I had a friend who was using my FP iMac to edit a video project he was working on, and he refused to use iMovie. I asked him why, and his answer was "iMovie sucks". He went on to say how much better Adobe Primier was. I said, that may be true, but premier costs quite a bit. He said, "I could just download it off of limewire", and I said "not on my computer". So he downloaded the demo version of Premier (which I am sure is a great program), which needed to run in OS9, and he couldn't get it to work at all. I asked him what he needed to do with his simple project that he couldn't do in iMovie. He didn't have a real answer, he just kept stating that iMovie sucked and he didn't want to use it. (his answers included: It's too simple. You can't edit frame by frame. True, but there was no way he needed to edit frame by frame for his silly little "home movie" project)

Long story long, he is using iMovie, cause his PC wouldn't work for video editing, and he couldn't make Premier work, because even if iMovie "sucks", at least it actually works!!!

when i told him i could do everything i wanted on mac os X, he said i just haven t got any idea what people can do on windows, well, i left him thinking i didn t know anything of computers :D
by the way, i ve used every version of windows who has ever come out, and am using debian for 5 years. And well , I really don 't know anything about peeeceees :)

Is this work or play?

Remember: when one uses a PC, it is called 'work'. When one uses a Mac, it's called 'play'. So even if I'm writing a book or programming, it's play time! Just even touching a PC seems agonizing at times...I don't like the feel, the taste. Ech.

fellow computer science student asks...

I'm sitting in my Computer Science class with my iBook, and I'm the only Mac user in the college, and the subject turns to Macs. One of the student asks me...

"Do Macs have text files?"

I admit that I didn't handle the question gracefully... I smirked and laughed and basically said "duh! yes".

I got one just today actually. I overheard a teacher complaining about his imac (all teachers have an imac on their desk, district provided) and how he could open up microsoft word. I asked him if I could take a look at the comp he said yes, I go to the apps folder, and I see it is not installed. I asked him if he had ever used ms word on here and he is like no, but its always on pc's, so i thought.....
I cut him off there and said, just use apple works. which was installed.

so not really a dumb question mac question, but just dumb in general :p

oh and yeah, and i will try not to spam

Education Needed

Many of these PC users aren't Mac-ignorant, but ignorant about the Internet or computers in general. There is not much we can do about those. The others though can be helped. These are the people who think:
1. There is no software for Macs
2. Macs are only for "graphics"
3. Macs "suck" (no reason given)
4. Macs crash all the time
5. You can't use any 3rd-party periferals with a Mac
6. You can't hook up a Mac to a PC network
7. Macs aren't worth what you pay

Without someone telling these people otherwise, they will continue to believe the misinformation. Apple doesn't need any more "image" ads...the Apple brand is completely wedged into the populace. People need the FACTS man...give them details so they know WHY Macs are the best.

reasons why to buy a mac

I am a teacher and I teach about Audio in Media. The class prior to it is about computers (but not macs surprisingly), so I find it quite nice to finally answer the questions my students have about the "OTHER" side of computers, and I always give them a fair and unbiased way to decide what they want:

Go to the Apple Store and try one. Play with it. See if you are comfortable with it. The majority of them find they like it and buy one. It is nice to kill the myths by showing them what macs can do. And they are surprised at what Apple can do as well.

Ain't technology nifty!

"I can't use Ethernet! I need the Internet!"

Induhvidual: "I won't buy the Mac because it doesn't have the Internet. With a normal computer, the box it comes in says that the Internet is included. The Mac boxes say something about Ethernet. So, Ethernet is like the Internet for Mac. What does 10/100/1000 mean? Is that like the number of Web sites you can go to on this Ethernet, depending on your membership level? I need to be compatible with the real world, so I won't buy a computer that doesn't already have the Internet."

There is no smiley on this board that could represent the face I made after I finished reading your post. dear. god.

first: my ex-colleague, Saeed, is not ignorant in computer technology.

our office had about 6 Macs, and he was forced to use a first gen sawtooth G4 thanks to our pro-mac boss. when i was there, Saeed had been using this g4 for 6 months and had it all set up the way he wanted.

and he really really hated macs. he bashed them sporadically almost every day.

so one day he decides to have one workstation be just for final cut/dvd studio and the other just for photoshop/burning. he asked me to put a couple apps on the second machine, and i knew they didn't have any special extensions, so i just moved them over the network.

saeed: whoa whoa..whoa. don't you need to run the installer?
mike: probably not. (tries, app runs)
saeed: wait. do macs have a registry?
mike: (basking in his own made-up victory) no.
saeed: wow.

later that day

saeed: "****! mac's ***** suck."
mike: why, what's up?
saeed: they just aren't as logical as XP.

if you knew this guy, you wouldn't think logic would be a driving force behind any aspect of his life.

so anyway, over the course of my stay, saeed was shocked countless times just how much easier many things were in OS 9 and X. easy to the point where he didn't even have to think about anything. then he would remember he hates apple, for no reason other than it's a socially acceptable prejudice.

finished.

Hey, that's nice!
Why didn't I think of that one?
