Unfortunately, I believe that NT will only install on G1 PPC Macs (aka 601 processors). I once tried to install it on my PowerBook 3400 to give me a dual-boot system, but it promptly informed me that I was trying to install it on unsupported hardware.

Also, btw I smell a pc troll, what kind of pc do u use evilsprung?

I use a P4 1.7ghz and I own a 12" pb.

People look because of basic curiousity. I looked because I wanted to see what small gripes or implicit ragging on pc users would be posted. Seriously why do you all waste your time ragging on PC users and windows? It's such a trivial matter and its not like these comments help anyone. Just deal with the fact that there are people that will use PC's and Windows and will ask you those questions. There's no need for you to get all in an uproar about these things.

the joke is that people ask stupid questions. this occurs on both sides. if you start a "worst question a mac user has asked you" I will post some dumb things my mac friends have said. How is this thread in an uproar? Its all a joke, lol. Its the dumb things people say, that as a mac user, people can find funny. ok. its all for laughs.

just take it easy evilsprung, its all in the laughs :)

"You got a Mac, right?"
"Yes, I do."
"How's it with them files?"
"What files?"
"Well, you know ... files."
Ummm, yeah. But what kind of files?"
"Well, like, JPEGs and text, 'n stuff."
"Yeah, what about them?"
"Can you open them? I guess not; a Mac can't do that, can it?"
"Riiiiiiiight..."

Another person asking quite a dumb question:

"Why did you buy an iMac?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the only thing you can do with it is surf the internet, right?"
"Ummm, no, not exactly. It's just another computer. It just doesn't run Windows, but that doesn't mean it can't do the stuff you do with your PC!"
"Yeah, right. Well, I bet you can't play MP3s, now can you?!..."
"Sure I can. Why wouldn't I be able to do that?"
"Well, then at least you can't open Office files. Ha!"
"You know, actually I can. Microsoft makes Office for Mac. And Internet Explorer, and MSN Messenger. Just like they do for Windows..."
"Ummm, oh. Didn't. Know. That. Oh. Well. Right. Whatever!"

I have those types of conversations at least once a week. :( It is really getting me frustrated to have to keep telling people about the iApps, Office for Mac, and how macs can do anything pc's can do, including a lot of gaming.

I know what ya mean with the ads. People are going to keep asking us these dumb questions, like "can macs play mp3s?", unless Apple comes out with informative ads, showcasing everything you can do with a mac. show a guy playing UT, editing a movie with imovie, playing a music file in iTunes. Burning a DVD. show a person for gosh sakes, opening up his G4 tower and putting three hard drivces in there. I mean honestly Apple, no one is going to switch if they think they cannot use word processing, surf the internet, play any games, listen to music, burn cds or dvds, or even upgrade any of their hardware. This is the plain and simple truth and Apple needs to get up to snuff and implement such.

Exactly! Show MS Office or even VPC.
I don't know why Apple doesn't do this kind of advertizing. Do they think their "target customers" are the ones who know this allready? Don't they want to appeal to computer-newbies? I really think they should! That's what a newbie wants: eas of use! Well, show 'em! Advertize, and sell!

Perhaps playing a game, but I expect they'd have to/want to be careful about being specific about what game it is...

... editing a movie with imovie...

They've done that...

... playing a music file in iTunes...

They've done that...

... Burning a DVD...

They've done that...

... show a person for gosh sakes, opening up his G4 tower and putting three hard drivces in there...

I think that the pro-users that would buy a tower really ought to know and/or be smart enough to find out how upgradeable any system that they'd consider is.

Not to defend Apple too much, but they have put out some truly spectacular commercials over the years. The state of their advertising department now is nothing like what it was ten years ago. (There's a story about SJ's return to Apple that says that he walked into the ad. dept. and asked what the marketing strategy for the next year was. His answer was some blank stares and someone asking him "What do you want it to be?", where upon he fired the entire ad. dept. and hired a whole new department.)

Apple is, however, in a very difficult position. They can't quite claim that you can do everything on a Mac that you can on a PC. There are several applications in my lab that are only available for Windows. No options. And, as they are specific apps for running certain scientific pieces of hardware, we can't just buy a different app that does the same thing under Mac OS. So, Apple needs to communicate the fact that their computers are capable of doing all of the regular tasks that computers do, without making such a claim. Not easy...

Anyway, back to the topic...

Actually, no, I wasn't. They had a series of commercials a couple of years ago that showed things like, a movie being made in iMovie, burned to a DVD and mailed to his parents (the movie was of the guy's wedding). They also had a movie showing a guy ripping a CD to his iMac, listening to the music, copying it to his iPod, then walking out the door. And there were a number of others. Yes, as far as this kind of 'show what you can do', the switcher campaign wasn't great. But, it addressed another aspect of advertising, namely the first hand anecdote. Apple has used many different marketing strategies over the years, and I have every reason to believe they will continue to do so. Some will appeal to you, some will appeal to me, some will appeal to that guy over there. As the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time...

i hope he isn't referring to those. they don't show you jack, they just tell you. but there is nothing wrong with that, really. some of the best commercials have little to do with the product itself. some of the most practical, straightforward commercials are utterly stupid and detrimental to the product's success. and people will still be as dumb as ever. no, apple doesn't need commercials for kindergarteners, they need some with reasonably original ideas, like the yao ming/powerbook thing.

spelling out what your product can do in 30 seconds is asinine. even going into "detail" on one specific thing is not going to go far. if marketing sells a product, it's marketing like dell's. they don't get complicated. they have a slogan as stupid as "easy to buy, easy to own, easy as dell." with intelligent people like snowy river was talking about, things like that will inspire users to check them out via some method of research--reviews, etc., which leads to higher sales.

i wouldn't put my hope in ads, though. you can spell out how good macs are as much as you want, on flyers, from soap boxes, on TV, whatever. the people you want to reach don't care. they are stuck with their false impressions, and they well know to just block out advertising as propaganda. if you want to reach people, i think really the best way is to do it personally. i carry my powerbook around everywhere, and show just about anyone who asks. they are almost always impressed, and their interest is piqued. that's the best advertisement--it's not limited to a billboard or a 30 second commercial.

Excellent point, Shadowfax. I think that in many ways we are the best ads that Apple could hope for. Especially those of use with iBooks and PowerBooks. Hmm... Maybe that's why it's the year of the laptop...

This happened an year back when I used to play Diablo 2 online. I killed a guy's amazon with my palladin. And he was so mad. He said he'd put a virus on my computer and destroy my firmware. I said, "you can't, cause I am using a Mac". he said, "Ha ha, you are dead. everything that can destroy a PeeCee can destroy a Mac." I knew by then he couldn't be a real hacker :D

You got your computer it's own PowerBook? How nice of you! ;)

Anyway, probably the worst thing a Windows (I refuse to say PC, since a Mac falls under that definition, I'm just anal) user has ever said to me was this conversation, which happened when I had my iBook out at a PC baang (called PC Bang, went there with some friends):

Random Guy: Wow, that's a nice little machine!

Me: Thanks. I really like it. (opens machine, waking it into OS X instantly)

RG: That's a nice looking interface! And it woke from sleep so quickly! That must be a really expensive machine.

Me: Actually they start at $999. This particular one cost a little more, but that was to get a DVD drive in it.

At this point I'm thinking I've got a potential convert here, but then it all went to hell.

RG: How many fps does it get in CS?

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

And so it ends... :(

This was a conversation between me and my younger brother:

He: Mac Sucks, and that's that!!
Me: What's that?
He: That!
Me: What?
He: ...
