I just love those nondescript conversations that consist of 'macs suck', sans of course any reasons why 'macs suck'. I always ask them for reasons why macs suck and they always say games. Augh.

ignorant inquiry regarding Macintosh

and I quote: "Isn't Apple going out of business?" or "Didn't Apple go Bankrupt?"

Both of these were when I was standing in a CompUSA... RIGHT NEXT TO THE APPLE SECTION!!!

It is true: 95% of the consumer world use Windows based PC's, but 95% of my professional world uses Macs (Audio Recording, Graphic Design). So that would mean that the mass populous is a bunch of morons, right?

If 95% of the people in the world jumped off a cliff... the world would be a better place.

Once when I was in Middle School I got pretty angry at one visiting technician to the computer lab because he made the remark "Macs are so great - you get them going and you have time to make a sandwich before they're done." I didn't say anything because I was twelve or so and shy about the whole thing, but his idiosynchrosy, being the owner of a Windows 3.1 computer system, just had to make me chuckle :).
Whenever someone approaches me about the floppy disk thing, I just tell them that almost every email service today will let you attach files the size of a floppy disc to your messages. No hardware required.

Mac users really don't need this kind of advertising...

Don't advertise for Apple like that. Like someone has already pointed out before me, mac users don't need to be regarded as zealots anymore than they are.

It is not my wish or intent to insult you by picking this nit, but due to the point of this thread, I felt I needed to correct a "worst thing".

The above is not, in fact true. About 80% of the world uses Windows PC's.

What is true is 95% of the market is Windows based PC's - meaning 95% of computers bought/sold at retail are Windows based PC's. This is Market Share.

But only 80% or so are actively used Windows based PC's.
This is Installed Base. BTW- at last count, Macs are about 11.6% of Global Installed Base.

This is classic misprinting by the media, and frankly, I understand if it's easy to confuse, but it's one thing that really irks me to hear. Market Share is only applicable to Hardware sales. Once a sale is made, that customer is no longer in the market, and thus a member of the Installed Base.

It's a pain on the brain, but I beg all of you, you too KlarkKent007, to try to remember the concept here (numbers secondary), and the difference between the two. It's classic FUD fodder and we need to battle it.

Because a badly stated Statistic, is a "Damn Lie".

Off soapbox :D

Thanks for pointing that out. I think it's terribly important. Alfa Romeo, Fiat and MG don't sell any cars in the US. They have 0% market share. Does that mean 0% of the cars in the US are Alfas, Fiats or MGs?

I guess too that this means that the figure can be changed.

If 80% of the world jumped off a cliff the world would be a better place. That's more like it. We saved the extra 15% of Mac users ;)

Yeah it's a great thread, but everytime I get my e-mail telling me there is a new post. I get ready to read somebody's funny story about myths, instead I get you telling everybody to keep it going. I realise how close you are to 500, but seriously, do you need to spam this much?

I'm not sure if it's Microsoft's problem that you fail to grasp the distinction between the left and right mouse buttons. I guess you could go out and get a 1-button mouse and it will work just fine for you.

I suck at Starcraft

ok here comes yet anouther story, only about 15min old.. my friend pointed out why I'm so bad at SC: BECAUSE OF YOUR MOUSE! YOU NEED TO HAVE TWO BUTTONS!"

:) wasn't a very serious one, but I know he means it.

He said shift key, not mouse button. And yes, it is Microsoft's problem if two identically labelled shift keys don"t do the same thing, especially if they don't specify which one. Besides, isn't it awkward to have to use the left shift key when the mouse is on the right side of the keyboard?

I was helping answer some questions to a lady who was getting fed up with her PC and she asked what I did when I got a virus on a Mac, or what virus protection programs were out there. I just simply replied that I had never had a virus on any of my Macs in the 4+ years I've been using them at my home. Although I could download a virus scanner from my .Mac account, I suppose, but...why? As others have mentioned, I get a kick out of getting e-mails with an extension like .exe, .vbs, or .scr...even if I tried running any of them, they wouldn't work! Bwahaha!

I just assumed he meant mouse key since the left and right shift key does open a new browser window. My bad for assuming. I guess he's got other issues.

Works either way for me, so not sure. I'm left-handed so the left shift works best anyway.

The Abandonded Floppy Drive

Exactly. About the last time I used one on a PC was to boot into an OS or when installing an OS. That was about it.

I did use my floppy drive a few weeks ago to install a game from 1992, and amazingly enough, it ran better under Classic mode than it did under OS 9!

Helping the Help Desk out

This is what happened when TELEWEST sent someone to install my cable internet connection. One man installed the wires with no problems, and then another arrived an hour later to install and configure the software.

My similar experience happened when I got Qwest DSL. There were no proper instructions for Mac OS X, but there was some software and junk for OS 9. I called the help desk to figure out how to get OS X to work. No help there. So I experimented by just telling OS X to find an IP address using DHCP. It worked, no sweat. No software, very simple configuration, and that was it. Then I called the Help Desk back and told them how to fix the problem. :) Ah, that was fun.

Cant go shouting too loud about keyboard bizarreness, I havent even got a delete key on my $3000 Powerbook! :(

"Which side does the CD tray slide out?" made me smile.

i guess sarcasm is new to some of you...

what was intended was "if 95% of the world jumped off a cliff, would you." But it seemed trite.

I guess I am too cynical

But you NEED a floppy drive!

How else would you boot under DOS to update your computer's BIOS?

A few years ago I had loaned my old Powerbook (which did have a floppy drive) to a friend of mine who mentioned the trouble she was having with it because she couldn't figure out how to save documents from Word to the floppy drive. "I thought the Mac was supposed to be intuitive!" she said.

I asked her to show me what she was doing, and to my horror I saw her going to the File menu, selecting "Save As..." and in the file name field, she entered:
A:\MYFILE.DOC

According to her, the problem was with the Mac which kept replacing the colon with a dash. She suspected a virus...

I pointed out to her that when she inserted the floppy while the file chooser was up it automagically switched to the floppy, so all she had to do was press return. But to this day she's still convinced that the One And True Holy Name for the floppy ought to be "A:".

I think it's clear that Microsoft software ravages brains as surely as mad cow disease.
