I think my wife is a good example of the average consumer. She does zero complaining. As long as she can text, Facebook, and take pictures she is content.

Her one complaint would probably be that there is not a user manual per se. Because google is just so hard

What I hear? Price.

Unfortunately, most people I know and work with are very technically inclined, so I have to exclude what they say... pretty much everyone I know. lol.

What's the most common complaint that you hear about iPhones from folks that you wouldn't consider to be technophiles? (No MRF members. No one complaining about PPI or Samsung RAM.) Just gripes from Average Joe about his iPhone?
iCloud storage space. I've had to explain a couple of times to people that their iPhone isn't full but they need to pay a monthly subscription to increase the iCloud storage if they want to back up their device/pictures to iCloud.

I know you use several different phones; you must have friends/family coming to you with iPhone complaints. What do they complain about?
Actually I know a huge circle of mainstream iPhone and Android users of all ages. The number of complaints about their smartphones are surprisingly low. Questions or issues with iPhones involve iMessage, battery life, blue tooth and WiFi.

For non-techies, price.

For techies, restricted OS.

Glad a few folks can actually read and didn't have trouble understanding my thread. Good grief.

Battery and price in relation to storage size.

My non techie friends and family know that 16gb isn't enough but find the price of the next step up out of this world.

I agree that both could be better. Now certain android models are releasing with 64gb base models for less than the iPhone with 16gb. Not saying those devices are better but to a non techie person it could make the iPhone seem nothing short of a rip off.

Wouldn't/shouldn't techies have already known this BEFORE purchasing?

You can complain about something without even owning the device. People do it online all the time. ;)

But sometimes people don't realize how restrictive they find iOS until they actually try it. Really, if someone is truly a tech enthusiast, they should have some first hand experience with all the major platforms. Otherwise they might just be a fanboy.

Can you define "truly a tech enthusiast"? Seems like an over-generalist statement that is needed to support the point about a fanboy. Some people might find iOS liberating in that it's plug and go.

Most common complaint at best Buy, my wife tells me, is that the screen breaks too easy. People expect glass to not shatter when they drop their naked phone onto the concrete I guess.

Last year I dropped mine onto a laminated pseudo-wooden lectern from less than 12" and it cracked my screen. I was unlucky enough to have it strike the corner, but still. :-/

I never said that a tech enthusiast can't favour a specific platform. Everyone has a preference. But if someone has only ever tried Apple (for example) are they really a tech enthusiast or rather an Apple enthusiast? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Biggest whining I hear is how there is not much customization

You can be a tech enthusiast without having to try everything. I love all tech and reading about it. I haven't of course owned every single piece of tech I read about.

I tried bb for four years, Windows, android and iOS. My preference is iOS. On my Intel computer i use Linux and Windows. People don't fit into neat, little compartments for purposes of Internet forums.

Okay so where did I say that you or anyone else who favours iOS isn't a tech enthusiast? I said that people who have only ever tried Apple may not really be tech enthusiasts, and that's clearly not you, so why are you acting like I was talking about you?

I never said you have to own everything. People seem to be misunderstanding what I meant. I just meant that some people who claim to be tech enthusiasts have very like knowledge or experience beyond a particular platform. They will spend all day telling you how platform X is the best and have literally never held a platform Y device. To be clear, I never meant to imply that about anyone here.

Moving, deleting, syncing, copying photos. About anything to do with managing photos, actually. Of course these non-MRF folks are using the standard Photos app. Then comes erratic iMessages - always between iPhones not iPhone to Android, of course. And no phone's battery is big enough at some point.

It seems like some of the MR community has tried multiple phones, there are constant threads about switching and switching back.

Wow. That's a crappy situation. It always feels worse when you take good care of your things. I ended up (well my wife did) running my iPhone 4 through the wash launch night.

Apple genius was super cool about it. They swapped it out for $100 (the price then was $200).
