I never said you have to own everything. People seem to be misunderstanding what I meant. I just meant that some people who claim to be tech enthusiasts have very like knowledge or experience beyond a particular platform. They will spend all day telling you how platform X is the best and have literally never held a platform Y device. To be clear, I never meant to imply that about anyone here.
My best friend is like that. He won't touch an iPhone but is convinced android is the superior product in all measurable (and maybe some immeasurable) ways. Great guy, fwiw, but his android bias is about as bad as it gets without actually trying to belittle people.

Fwiw I tend to agree with you. In general, my definition of tech enthusiast isn't the person with such a severe brand loyalty that they own nothing else. Speaking completely objectively one couldn't conceivably fill their house with technology all made by (or supported by) the same company.

This whole thread is full of b.s.

Non-technophiles don't complain about their phones, at all. They look at them as a tool, like Chapstick, or gloves.

Seriously, I've never once heard a family member or friend ever even mention their iPhone, and if I ever start talking about phones or computers in any way around these people, their eyes glaze over, and they start daydreaming.

Wow. That's a crappy situation. It always feels worse when you take good care of your things. I ended up (well my wife did) running my iPhone 4 through the wash launch night.

Apple genius was super cool about it. They swapped it out for $100 (the price then was $200).
Yup. It sucked. Rocking the RhinoShield + Ice Max 3D now.

I know better than to expect an Apple Store employee making an exception, but it's sure nice when it happens.

They absolutely do complain, just not about the kind of technical stuff that techies do. You're right, most people just see their phones as tools, and people absolutely complain about tools that don't work how they want or expect them to, or that seem overpriced.

Other people here have clearly observed this even if you haven't, so I don't know how you can just write off the entire idea as BS.

C'mon though, you're telling me people don't complain about their tools?

Not sure what sort of utopian Neverneverland you call home (maybe I need to move somewhere that pot is legal :D), but in my experience, people complain about everything--their expensive everyday "tools" most definitely not excluded.

My family friends that drive trucks across the US for s living just visited and were complaining about how their "I6" battery dies too fast. The husbands phone also looks like T had gone through the ringer... About a dozen times. When I asked what they had before, they described what sounded like a flip phone...

The idea that average consumers don't complain about these things is what is bs. They may not have a well rounded perspective on their problem (or perceived problem), but that doesn't mean there are no complaints.

The point of this thread is to share complaints the tech illiterate have shared with you. Not post your own personal experience as gospel and denounce the experiences of others... Sheesh.

It's like saying that only climatologists complain about the weather.

Really? That's what your iPhone-using friends and aquaintences say?
Yes. My wife and mother are both non-techies and they both complain about running out of room because of the 16GB size. People may not understand all the ins and outs of storage but they aren't stupid. My wife and mother understand that 16GB fills up fast with all the pictures and videos they take. Thank goodness for iCloud Photo Library.

There's a difference between understanding storage limitations and understanding model storage tiers. I will always find people's complaints about 16GB's of storage utterly ridiculous. There are two other choices.

You have 1 person to blame if you rent happy with 16GB.

BTW, for the record, I have a 16GB model and I make do. It was my choice to save a few bucks.

The problem is that many non-techies have absolutely no concept of what these capacities mean. They don't know the difference between 16 GB and 16 MB.

Oh they know what sizes are out there as they do research before buying like anything else they're shopping for. For both of them paying $100 more for storage wasn't worth it for them.

Battery and storage. I have some friends (women) that love taking pics when we are out. After an hour or two I hear them say "ugh, give me a second let me delete some old pics, my memory is full."
I went on a two week vacation with one of my friends recently, on the 4th day at this science museum she ran out of memory.

You're right, they don't know the technical difference but they definitely know that 16GB is the smallest they can buy.
Yes but it doesn't matter. They don't know that 16gb can only hold x pictures + videos + music. They just think it will be sufficient.

A few weeks back my buddy was complaining about the call quality...I know right....phone calls on an iPhone. He says people are always asking him to repeat and he can't always make out certain people. I blamed the iPhone and bet him a vintage phone would be better. I let him make calls all week on my old Motorola Rokr E8 (simple sim swap)....said it was night and day....the vintage Moto was far superior to the iPhone SE he just bought. Said the Rokr was clearer and the callers didn't ask him to repeat himself a million times. Now he is unsure what to do..lol

So I guess call quality.....but since nobody uses it for that...and if they do its just "hey....yo....im here....cool."....I'll let you decide.

Lack of Ram, lack of storage, case design, chip speed, iOS, lack of waterproofing, low screen resolution, bad battery life, ridiculous price, screen too easy to scratch and break, phone prone to bending, lack of compatibility with software they already use.

Pretty well everything about the iPhone.

Of course, you can add a lack of a headphone socket to that list soon as well.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

They do seem dated, they could have made them smaller.
That's not quite the point there (or what the thread is really asking).

Typical users even know what RAM or "chip speed" are to even complain about them? And then "iOS" that's somehow a complaint in itself from typical users?

Typical users complain about bezels? I'd wager most didn't even know that word, let along complain about them.

Yeah, I have to say I've never heard an average user complain about the bezels, but I guess if they've seen some of the sleeker android phones it's something people might notice.
