if its not a hardware issue then how do you explain it being a software issue if the iPhone has basically the same software, they used the same diagnostic tool afterall. yet the iPhone displays picture perfectly

THANK YOU!!! That's what I was hoping someone with a touch would do...

Now- in the adjusted image, how dark are the blacks? Are they reasonably black to you, or are they grey? And there is absolutely no hint of wash out or negative blacks, when viewing directly straight on, right?

It sounds like you are happy with the results, but I just wanted to double-check to be sure.

Yep, the blacks are BLACK. I've viewed the altered image from multiple angles and I can't even get the negative effect to appear anymore!

The iPod touch & iPhone may share the same user interface, but they definitely don't share the same software. I'm not saying that this problem is CONFIRMED to be fixable through software, but there's some pretty strong evidence to back it up. Until we here something from Apple, we really don't know %100.

That doesn't mean that the Touch screen calibration is the same. There could be any number of software variables for Gamma and contrast. The software could be the same, but that doesn't mean the settings are the same.

all I know is that its pissing me off and they better fix it soon

I'm really surprised they haven't said anything official yet. Something as simple as "a fix is forthcoming" or "don't worry, we'll be glad to replace them." I don't care if its soon, it would just be nice to hear some acknowledgement.

And what is causing the problem? Has anybody found what is the cause "For sure"?

They need to find the real cause first, Then fix it. If you can't wait then take it back if it bothers everybody that much! I'm tired of hearing about it.

I actually edited the original image and took the pic from the same dead-on viewing angle. It's not that difficult... as many others have stated, it's all about altering the "dark levels" of the image. The touch has a problem displaying absolute blacks. It really seems as though the manufactured display settings for this screen is just off and needs a software fix...

please, are you asking zillions of content providers to re-code their products?

and again, if you are suggesting apple to re-mapping their hardware, how does apple apply update to both good and bad screens? not to mention the re-mapping might not be doable at all like some people mentioned previously.

gamma and contrast slider with the exsiting brightness one.

done.

We're not talking about making Apple adjust all of their videos... we're talking about making Apple adjust the iPod so that the screen has the same Gamma and Contrast as a normal LCD screen. Gosh!

A large proportion of the iPod users out there are so far left of the bell curve if they dropped a ball bearing, it wouldn't be able to roll downhill. If you add the ability to mess with display curves, supporting those idiots when they screw their settings so badly they can't see is going to be worse than just fixing the screen in the first place.

Restore factory display settings? [ yes ] [ no ]

see the thing is, if you pay $399 for a product you should expect quality not defective screens or software that can't control a screen. And yes if apple doesn't acknowledge or fix the problem soon I will return it, because I usually expect nothing less than perfect from apple

Expect all you want, Apple is as flawed as any manufacturer. My service department is never short of work.

You are stupid! We're not talking about making Apple adjust all of their videos... we're talking about making Apple adjust the iPod so that the screen has the same Gamma and Contrast as a normal LCD screen. Gosh!
gosh what?

you sound so sure about it, tell me exactly from what solid proof you reached the conclusion?

just because some people can change contrast and "gama" of a pic? you can reach a conclusion that the screen problem can be fixed by changing contrast and gama of "LCD", a hardware?

Im sure your home LCD TV can change contrast too, go ahead get a negative color and take a picture for me, please!

I'm not saying whether or not it's a hardware issue... what I'm saying is.. you're missing the point. We're not trying to have Apple fix all of the videos that go onto the iPod, we're just talking about them correcting the Gamma and Contrast on the screen and yes that CAN be controlled with software. I can calibrate this here monitor that I am currently looking at via System Preferences which is built into Mac OS X (software). BOOO YA! In YOUR face!

jeez. this is screwed up. if apple doesn't release something by the end of this week i'm going to have to return mine. my videos are almost unviewable and the album view mode is horrible looking with the negative black. how could all the test one's they send to companies be good but ours are all ******? i just don't understand. i don't give a rat's ass what the problem is i just want it fixed and that doesn't mean i want to wait 3 weeks by sending it back to apple but whatever. with all this complaining all over the internet they better be onto this freaking issue.

I understand that. The fact is this is cutting edge stuff and will always have bugs. Some user made problems and some QC.

My friend had to be the first to have a iPhone. He was ticked off after the price cut. Them all of sudden it was not worth the $599.00 he paid! It sure was when he could not wait for the second gen and had bragged about it for 2 months!

We don't really know for certain yet, we're still more or less gathering information. redRAYZA's feedback gives us some significant information about the problem, or potential solutions. It would be great if others with defective screens also tried the test images and posted their results.

It doesn't mean we're totally out of the woods. I don't think we've really established whether all screens have the problem, or if only some are, if they exhibit the problem to varying degrees. Only Apple will be able to find that out, once they start looking at customer returns, and units not yet shipped from the factories.

I think I know how this happened. I was quite wrong earlier. There are bad screens. But, these screens can be fixed in software, although we have no confirmation that this does not come with a quality loss. I think that Apple shipped certain displays that were either of inferior quality to others or were improperly calibrated/defective in their decoding of image data, specifically gamma. So, if the source is changed, the problem all but disappears in afflicted displays. But, the issue really is in hardware, despite being fixable in software. Does that make sense to anyone but me?
