Personally, I don't see any price cuts happening on it. People only see the $199 and $299 price tag for the phone, but not the price tag for a 2 year contract. Once more and more people realize how much money it is to own an iPhone, I think they'd be willing to settle for the current price of an iPod Touch and a cell phone. However, I can see the 8Gb model getting dropped for the line up.

If they introduce a 64GB version, weather it's September 9th (or 22nd) or in February, they're gonna have to lower the price by at least $100.
Especially since nobody's gonna pay $600 for a 64GB iPod, even if it has internet.

That's why I said they'd probably drop the 8Gb.

Prices:
16 GB $299 U.S.D.
32 GB $399 U.S.D.
64 GB $499 U.S.D.

COnsidering that the original iphone was 400 and 500 for prices and the current line of ipod touch is 300, 400, 500. If they put the 16 gig version as the low end and add capacity, or keep everything the same, it would be just as much as the current version of the iphone. The old one has contracts, and so does the new one. And they took 200 off of the price.

So ow in the hell can one assume that this shouldn't have at least that. If it is 300 that would mean that a high end ipod touch would be as much as a high end iphone. People pay for cell phone service, that is a given.

I'm having trouble trying to understand what you're getting at. That Apple should take 200 off the current iPod Touch?

OH, I see what you're saying.
I thought you said that if they dropped the 8GB they still wouldn't lower the price.

Yes, dropping the 8GB, lowering the price by $100, and adding in a 64GB version would make a lot of logical sense.

Kind of, but my major point is the price cut. If we must figure in the contracts, than we must figure in the price change for the iphone from first generation to the second generation. If not, then how can it not go down in price, and still be reasonable to keep making?

itouch is shorter and faster to write.

also, this is the internet.
iT.

Speakers would be so nice. I actually think it is strange that the iPod Touch does not have any speakers.
At least give us an option for speakers!

I think the new iPhone is subsidized but the old one isn't. So it doesn't have much to do with iPod touch prices, present or upcoming. I don't expect more than a $100~$150 price drop for 16/32 GB iPod touches.

These are just rumors, we don't know what it will look like, but we are 95% positive there will be a new iPod Touch.

In addition to what everyone else has been saying, people have been saying it may contain a camera, software update (2.1?), actual backgrounds for the home screen(s).

I personally think that if it does come with a new plastic back (very likely) it will be available in black and white.

what do you mean by actual backgrounds?

i thought that the iPod Touch allowed you to set a picture as a background??

sorry i am new to this device and have held off on buying it because of the rumored updates that are gona happen soon (hopefully) :apple:

You can't view backgrounds on your home screen(s)
The only backgrounds are for when it's on hold.

I don't expect you to know that since you don't own one.
I do not own one either, I'm just an obsessive freak when it comes to Apple
I too am planning on getting one soon, well depending on what's going to be included in the update.

And 150 would be okay but you have to realize that not everybody is going to realize that. Apple would have to go on a campaign telling people how stupid they(basically) to get it across why you can get the price of an ipod touch with 16 gigs for around the same as for the 16 gig iphone. One being the high end version of a line and the other being the low end.

Basically the price drop matters more than just for people to not have to pay as much, but it wouldn't be so easier for marketing it. Apple could have this kind of argument with thier computers but they can't with two devices that while different, do have many of the same functions.

Just out of curiosity, does Apple normally announce events at which new products are debuted? Didn't they hold a special event when the Classic was announced?

Yes, when the Classic was announced there was an event.
But the Classic wasn't showed or even talked about.
What they did talk about was the 3G Nano, the iPod Touch, 2G Shuffle, and some other stuff.

I had forgotten that all of those iPods debuted at the same time. My question is how much lead time was there going into that event? If we really think there will be something on Sept 9, would we have heard something by now?

For iPod debuts, if memory serves, they generally have about a week lead time. Maybe a touch less.

it'd be funny if they released it very silently before the event happened. Get the word of mouth going even more. Get people thinking it is already out, but the majority doesn't really know. Once it reaches a point where people know, then the event happens. the event would seem useless, but it would be their way of intruducing more of their gameplan and software related things, and maybe computers.

I think what they need to do is slowly do things. iPods first, then software, then computers. If you can keep the attention of the consumer long enugh, you will do even better. Even things that would normally seem minor will get attention.. They have that ability to draw people. the being Steve Jobs. Apple doesn't even have to hire somebody big to do a commercial to get people interested. Jobs is like gravity. he is a force that pulls you in. Microsoft will never be that. They will be known as the company that created windows, and got rich because it worked on more than one brand of computer, and then got reall buggy. But they don't have that gravity. They have money, and they can spend it all they want, but they are very old school when it comes to how I view them. Apple(and google) being new school because they can reach thier users. They can create interesting products.

I've actually found recent events to be rather obnoxious. While the products generally deliver the goods, the events are just too showy. Release the damn product and be done with it. We're smart folks; we know how to work things. And word of mouth spreads quickly.
