Okay, here is my 4th iPad and the one that I'm keeping. The screen looks great in person. Very slight backlight bleed on dark screen at full brightness, but has no effect on normal use. Very happy with this one!

Here are some pics I just took of it including a comparison to our recently purchased iMac...

iPad looks good. The colour of your iMac looks a bit cool but at least it can be calibrated.

My work has bought 20, exchanged 5 of them, of which 4 had to be returned again. It's gonna happen when you have to crank out tablets in the millions.

9 unacceptable iPads out of 24; that's a 37.5% failure rate. Surely Apple can't be proud of that.

As I mentioned in another post, I purchased two $299 made-for Walmart Compaq laptops (15", 2G Celeron, MS Vista) for my kids fours years ago. Both have perfect screens, are used every day, and have not had one problem. My daughter used hers during the last two years of college and my son has used his all four years of college; he's currently using it for his 14 week student teacher assignment. It's amazing that so many people slam the plastic/MS laptops as junk and praise the iPad as another example of a high-quality product from Apple. My experience is very different from them.

I've been irritated by the horrible color change/viewing angle of my new iPad since day one.

Are people having success getting them replaced at Genius bars?

It's really awful, and having had both iPad 1 & 2, I find it to be a major step backwards.

The screen looks great even in pictures, probably the best I have seen so in this forum. That should be the expected quality that everyone should get!

For all of you that have both an iPhone and a new iPad that suffers from a tint, do the following:

1) In a dark room, use your new iPad to open a solid black image and set it to full brightness. Place it on a table.

2) Use your iPhone to take a photo of it at a 45 degree angle.

Looking at the iPad in this manner at a 45 degree angle will not show any defects, you'll just see a solid black image, but I can assure you, your iPhone will be able to capture the defect. The photo your iphone takes will show the uneven hue that you're observing on a light background.

Try it.

Thanks! Yes, was extremely pleased when I powered it on for the first time. It's too bad it took 4 tries to get a good one.

It's a shame that there seems to be large variance in screen qualities. It reminded me of that saying in Forrest Gump - "Turning on an iPad is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get".

Anyway, here are the specs:

Would you guys return this iPad? The backlight is a bit worse than it looks in photos and, as you can see, I have a bit of a pink issue. Has it been determined whether that's normal?

My room was as dark as possible during the day (blinds closed) and the photos are unedited from my iPhone 4S.

EDIT: Exchanged it for another one and it has the same pink tint, as well as a battery charging issue and sever light bleed through a pin hole at the top of the screen. The new one is a WEEK 2.

I hardly ever complain about products but I do feel that my new iPad does have a warmer screen temp than my first gen and any of my iPhones. I'm debating keeping it though because I think it's easier on my eyes when reading. It's really only noticeable on completely white screens as well and when the brightness is turned down under 75%. I may go back to see if I like a different screen better.

I collected my 4th replacement from the Apple Store in Glasgow today and it is completely different from the other three previous ones.

Screen is uniform white and bright. There is absolutely no colour change on tilting the screen. And a weird thing - the back feels and looks different - it's more matt than the last three.

I checked a good number of the display models and all were perfect white screens and had the matt back. It's build week 7 as were two of the other three and the DL (Foxconn) factory.

So something is going on. If you have tinting problems - return them folks. Not right.

Why on earth did this comment get voted down so substantially? People are frigging maniacs on here, borderline unstable.

My new iPad has the exact issue you describe with viewing angle...It only looks normal when held perfectly parallel to my face. The slightest tip in any direction, and the color changes to yellow/brownish/disgusting.

I have an iPad 2 right next to me which does NOT do that at all. Friends with iPad 3 have told me there's has no such issue either.

So mine is DEFECTIVE, like yours was. This needs to be talked about. Why idiots would vote down your honest experience is beyond any rational comprehension.

Just wanted to say that I'm on my 3rd iPad and finally found a perfect one. First one had dead pixels, second one had an uneven screen tint. The third one appears to be fantastic.

If you're bothered by an imperfect screen, it really is worth the time to keep exchanging them until you find one you like. Perfect screens are out there but they are harder to find than they should be

Does everyone see that pink tint when looking at the screen from an angle, with black content shown, or is it only on some of them?

With all this talk going on, I went to great lengths checking my iPad screen.
No issues here: white is white, no dead pixels, no strange tint, at full brightness a tiny bit of light bleeding is visible on the upper / left side (where the Smart Cover comes on), but only if you look closely.
The overall tone of the image is a tad bit to the "cooler" side of things.
And on a side-note: no heat issues, not battery issues.
Perfect machine.

Only thing is: now my iMac and MacBook Air screens look crappy.

Grabbed a new one, a week 2 16GB in black. It's got a little faint blue-ish in one corner, but it's not too bad. This is by far and away the best one I've had.

Man you people that keep returning your iPads really have no lives. 4, 5, 6 or even 7 times you look for something that isn’t there.

So for every device that gets released we have people like this. You guys make it seems like a widespread problem. Its not, the only problem is the one in your head. The Genius bar must hate people like you, maybe even more than the scalpers
Oh no, if I turn the brightness up tyo 100%, and turn off the light and restart the iPad to show only the startup screen then I can see Blacklight bleeding. How stupid do you people sound?
Newsflash, most LCD’s have blacklight bleeding. Check it out on your TV.

I have owned 3G, 3GS, Iphone 4, iPad, iPad2 and the new iPad, a Macbook Pro, Airport Express, Apple TV and Apple TV3, and never had the amount of time wasting as some of you do with your products.
Do you do the samething when buying any other product, or are you just this anal about Apple products?

Have you seen his prior iPads? The ones he returned? No? Then you don't know what you're talking about.

You're not an expert on other people's displays, much less what they should tolerate.

You are just so different.

This is funny. Did you just take a screenshot? Screenshot is always correct since it is exported directly from the OS.

Yes, I got it entirely wrong! :p My screen is slightly Yellow but it doesn't bother me too much. :)

Wow. Your powers of reading polls that support your guess-stated-as-fact almost a week ago are unrivaled. Congrats in your self satisfaction.

It was not a guess - it was a web review and analysis - any significant screen issue, as I said, would have been blown sky high by the Apple haters - not so as the vast majority of iPad 3 owners are a big thumbs up.

Getting past your high school level debate lessons, you asked for data / research - her is the first - far more to come.

iPad 3 is the best yet. Perfect - no, there are a few bad screens out there - but not anywhere what the haters and OP were postulating.
