I have now been through 5 iPad 3s.
The first had a nasty pink/green color shift diagonally through the screen.
The first replacement was equally bad, with the pink/green cast in the opposite corners.
The 2nd replacement was not quite as discolored, but still had some discoloration...mostly pink. It also had a 2 inch wide vertical strip of darkness along the entire left edge of the screen, making it look dull and dingy. On top of this, it had 3 x .5" gaps in the backlight seal when viewed at a low angle on 1 end of the screen, and another patch of the same leak on the other end of the screen. This did not effect the viewing area, but I'm sure it would have effected resale value if it was noticed.
I returned it today and got the 3rd replacement, this time with a lighter but still noticeable pink/green/cyan cast, again diagonally through the screen, but not as pronounced. It also gets notably hotter than my other 3. It also has a small spot of backlight leak under the bezel edge.
I checked out my boss's new iPad. His, ordered direct from Apple, showed a warmer color overall than mine, less pink/green (though pink/green was still visible.)
I also checked out a co-worker's new iPad. His looked like a variation of all of the ones I've seen...a light pink/green cast diagonally through the screen.
After reading some anecdotes here about "perfect" iPads bought at Best Buy, and factoring in that 3 of mine have all come from the same Apple store, I decided to play the screen lottery at a new store, and buy one from Best Buy.
5 minutes later, I was in the return line, with a pink/green cast screen AND a glaring nasty gap in the backlight seal under the bezel.
So far, I have yet to see a single perfect white, evenly lit New iPad anywhere.
Here's the breakdown...
3 iPads order from Apple, received on launch day (mine and 2 co-worker's)...all with pinkish/greenish discoloration, mine was the worst.
3 replacements from one specific Apple store...all with pinkish/greenish discoloration, 2 with backlight seal gaps.
1 from Best Buy...pinkish/greenish discoloration and a nasty backlight seal gap.
Granted this is a very small sampling of iPads, but they come from a variety of places. Either I'm very unlucky, or a lot more iPads have this issue than people are aware of. I'd be willing to bet most people don't have sophisticated enough vision to discern the problem, including those here who claim to have "perfect" iPads.
I'm very close to returning mine for once and for all until another manufacturer starts making these screens in quantity.
