The closer to the size of a wallet you get, the more easy it is to pocket.
The full size iPad will fit into very few pockets.
The proposed iPad mini with standard iPad sized bezels will fit into more pockets, but not nearly as many as a Kindle sized iPad.

Oh, I'm not disputing that there are pockets large enough to fit an iPad mini. I'm just saying that the number of pockets that it wouldn't fit are significant enough that I wouldn't think of an iPad mini as "fitting into a pocket." To me, that expression means it fits into the front pocket of a suit pants or a shirt pocket. Anything bigger and I have to think about which pockets it would fit into, instead of just pulling out any clothes out of my closet and knowing my device will fit into a pocket, as is the case with my iPhone.

Sure beats having to carry something around in your hands all the time.

Well, I don't carry my iPad in my hands, I put it in a bag. One reason an iPad mini *would* be nice is that I have several purses I could use to carry it in, which have been sitting unused in my closet because they are too small to hold the regular size iPad. But as I said before, I don't see much point in carrying both an iPhone and an iPad mini. If the iPad mini comes with cellular connection and fits in one of my purses, I might just give up the iPhone and use just the mini. We'll see.

Lets just call it degree of pocketability.

The Kindle sits right at the upper limit of where something could be considered pocketable, so getting the mini iPad to that size would be a benefit to quite a few people. Depends on the people.
Over half the population doesn't carry a purse, so they are faced with carrying something in their hands, or coming up with another device such as a backpack. I'd personally prefer to use pockets when possible.

I already use my iPad for well over 90% of my calls. I pay under $100 a year for cellular phone charges, so iPhone cost with contract doesn't appeal to me in the least. Plus the screen is so cramped...

I know my requirements for a mini purchase would be: narrow as possible, fully functional 4G and cameras, preferably retina, and definitely a display that will work in sunlight. I'd pay good money for that.

Fat mini, slim mini, cheap crippled mini, nice costly mini, no mini .... ? We'll see what happens.

Edit - Just going over your situation Night Spring, you might also do well with a dumb phone for voice and texting, and the supposed mini for everything else. If you're used to carrying a purse, seems like everything would work for you.
That of course, would require a mini with cellular data. If Apple winds up delivering a crippled mini, it will probably be to keep people from doing just that.

Once upon a time, there was no such thing as the iSlate....iTab......iPad.......iTampon? A rumored giant ipod touch. Expected to be a colossal failure. I fully expect a smaller iPad in the $250-300 range. Why? People want one but dont want to shell out $4-500. Plus I'd be less worried about a cheaper one. Wouldn't be freaked about using it in the bath and more willing to grab it and go without fearing it will slide off my car seat or get dropped because it was half the price of the big one.

The Galaxy Note is awesome. I should know as I have been using one for 3 months now. Is it as good as an iPad for browsing the web? Nope.
Is it good for browsing when my iPad is not within my reach? Sure.

And it's an awesome phone. And it is amazing how no one has said anything to me about the size of the phone other than how nice it is! Imagine that.

Maybe "you" would look like a "tool" using it, but then again, maybe you just look like a tool!

No need to get personal.

I don't really use a phone, as I'm hard of hearing and can't really carry on a conversation over a phone. I use the iPhone for texting, email, and music. So yes, if an iPad mini does come out with cellular data, then I could very well ditch the iPhone and switch to the mini. A lot will depend on the actual size/weight of the mini, of course. One thing I'm sure of is I see no need to juggle 3 iOS devices. For me, it'll either be the mini+iPad or iPad+iPhone.

Oh damn, I thought you had some form of proof that Apple will never release a smaller iPad... but instead your just pushing your own thoughts out as fact. Shame.
