If it is just the iPhone4S, meaning a minor bump in spec's, but still same form factor as the current i4, then YES they will reveal it next week, and come out in July/August

But if it is a major upgrade, and finally a good enough phone to possibly compete with the newest Android devices releasing this Summer, and larger screen if they are smart, then I say it is delayed to September.

Or the Japanese nuclear disaster that is silently destroying that country, might be holding it up no matter what;

I agree with some that there is been a lack of strong evidence (hardware shots) for a new iphone but:

1) Apple needs to rectify the issue with the antennae, and Im sure they have been working on a new design/fix ASAP

2) In light of the last leak, they might be keeping things even tighter than usual

Some tech sites said there would be a minor upgrade (4S) now, and then a major overhaul in September, but that is just bad business. Apple wouldnt upset their customers by announcing a new model 3 months after the last one.

Either there will be a 4S now, and 5 next june, or no upgrade till September.

no, for two similar reasons:

The short amount of time the verizon iphone and the white iphone have been on the market.

In order to make these things profitable, the length of time from product debut and the next version needs to be longer than the normal june refresh time frame.

Pushing it to September (like all the rumors have suggested) gives a couple more months of purchases before the new iphone comes out.

The bigger question to me, is whether the ip6 (or whatever) will come out in June or in September of 2012. :p

I think if they plan on doing a minor update, then it may be announced for release this summer. If not, September it is.

What I don't get is why people think a release date of July/August equals minor upgrade and September means radical changes. How are 1-2 months going to change things so drastically? They have had a year to work on a new phone I don't see 1 month equating a difference in what product they release.

See, there's a lot of things Apple could be doing.

1) release iPhone 5 and iOS 5 next week
2) no iPhone 5, but release iOS 5 next week
3) no iPhone 5, announce but not release iOS 5 (released near iPhone 5, later)
4) maybe they are being super secret because of last year.

Thank you! I thought I was the only thinking along these lines.

iOS5 will not be released anytime soon. It has to go through a beta period of a few months. My guess it will be announced with a early fall release date. There most likely will not be any mention of a new phone because this is a SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS conference.

If OSX Lion is the first product Apple features on Monday, there's a better chance. It would be nice for them to close the show with iOS 5 and the "one more thing" to be "what a better device to run it on than...".

I absolutely love this plan and seems like a thing Apple would do! No matter what I will have my Acer laptop, iMac, and iPad all set to different tech blogs on June 6 at 1 P.M.!!! :D

I understand it's a software developers' conference, but just saying, they've had new iPhones every year at this conference too.

Anyways, I don't expect iOS to come out for a few weeks. Lion, on the other hand, I expect to come out almost instantly.

2 is the only near legitimate reason you're using. I don't understand how 3 months is the difference between a "well designed" iphone and a "rushed upgrade" when they've had a whole year to design it. If they are still making changes that major to it now, I think you better hope for a 2012 release instead of September.

How are the other 2 not legitimate? Feel free to add any that i missed.
Well in 3 months they can decide if they want to go with the "well designed" prototype or the "rushed upgrade" one.

It has to be by summer's end ...

I totally agree that releasing iPhone5 after Sept. 1st will be too late and cost them on Wall St. We've 4 phones out of contract on Verizon (since Oct. 2011) and have limped along with BB's waiting for iPhone5 ... but if no announcement by July 1st, we'll go Android and wait 2 years for iPhone 6 or 7. I've friends and co-workers in the same boat.

Keep in mind, this'll be the 10th anniversary of 9/11 so media will be preoccupied with that in Sept, and Oct/Nov presidential race begins in earnest, so yet more attention pulled away from tech.

Sooner is a must, imho ... and fwiw ... I love the look of the super slim, tear drop profile iPhone prototype floating around various forums (see below) ... I'd wait till September for that ... but not for a slightly revised 4s or an iPhone5 that sports same screen size as the iPhone4.

Well that's true. Last summer when the iPhone 4 came out, I personally thought it was BUTT ugly at first. Eventually I came to like the design, but not for a little bit. I had an upgrade at that point, so I bought a Samsung Captivate (Android.) The Captivate is a buggy pos. So I've been regretting not getting an iPhone for a long time, but I also didn't want to buy an iPhone 4 if a new one was around the corner. So I'm buying the HTC HD7s (Release date June 5 AT&T) if a new iPhone doesn't come out.

So you bought a crappy phone and have really wanted an iPhone for a while now.... and now you can't wait just a couple more months so you are going to buy another phone that may very well turn out to be kind of crappy?

Have some patience. Wait just a little bit and get the iPhone. The wait will be well worth it. ... or don't, I don't really care, I will just be over here enjoying my iPhone.

Well in 3 months they can decide if they want to go with the "well designed" prototype or the "rushed upgrade" one.

Point 1 is about what is leaked, which Apple has been extra tight about in recent months. They even created false stories to find potential leaks about 6 months ago if anyone remembers. Apple is going to do everything it can to avoid Redwood City bars again, because the unknown adds to the mystique of the product line and enhances media buzz when the product does launch.

Point 3 is about the nature of the conference as a whole. However, the Keynotes are quite often about hardware. A number of products have been unveiled during Keynotes, such that I think it's been 5 or 6 years (possibly more) since a WWDC Keynote did not have a new hardware product announcement or product refresh occur.

The take away has always been that while the conference is for developers, the Keynote is for the media. The showmanship is meant to impress and generate demand for hardware, since that is where Apple makes its money.

However, this is no guarantee that the iPhone will be updated either; any product that is due for a refresh could see a bump, but then so could more than one, especially if the changes are minor and only meant to stave off declining sales.

I'm not liking the tiny 3.5" display after several years, then experiencing a stellar large screen on another platform. If Apple does offer a larger display I'm still going to pass for the first time since day 1. With all the variables regarding component supply and a disgruntled Samsung supplier I'm going to pass. It will be a year for Apple to stabilize and they will still zillions anyway. People don't care, they just want to be seen with one.

Something tells me iP6 will be the one to own.

I will peacefully wait to read the reviews and rely on seeing how they perform as a phone. If the quality control is back to Apples normal standard. No company is perfect. I doubt Apple will goof like they did with Antennagate phone. There's already been lots of evidence the one thing this next model will have is an improved antenna. By the time iP6 is released I'm sure Apples new antenna engineers will have dialed it in correctly.

In what ways is it lacking? The iPhone 4 is pefect in terms of speed, camera, software etc....

Display needs to be bigger, newer smart phones on the market have dual cores, iOS 4 is really dated with notifications and a lack of simple widgets for basic tasks (why do I need to launch an app to see the weather?).

Storage also needs to be increased, especially since Apple won't ever make storage expandable.

I'm thinking Apple will only announce iOS 5 at WWDC and release beta to developers. I don't believe iOS 5 will see a public release until Sept. Last year, Apple unveiled iOS 4 in March and then released 3 months later in June with iPhone 4.

This year, since Apple hasn't yet unveiled iOS 5 and given it to developers, I think that's what will happen Monday. They probably won't release publicly for 3 months, which would put it at Sept. My guess is they'll probably hijack the annual iPod event in Sept to demo iOS 5 further with some of the new apps, and then use that as opportunity to unveil the new iPhone, whatever they end up calling it.

All I know is that my 3GS contract is up and I'm anxiously awaiting this year's model, so that I can upgrade.

I hope they do. Im sick of my signal going down after touching the sides of the phone. Its sad.

3 and 4 are the only plausible options. They wouldn't release iOS 5 without releasing beta's first. I'm hoping for option 4.

In the past betas were released to give developers time to update their apps to take advantage of new features in the OS (OS 2.0 was first release with App Store, OS 3.0 brought push notifications and such, OS 4.0 brought multitasking, game center) - perhaps OS 5.0's updates aren't the type that will force developers to rewrite their apps and Apple therefore doesn't feel the need to have a public beta
