According to a thread on the news forum page there will NOT be an Air 3. Damn. Guess I'll stick with my perfectly good Air then. I wanted them to take care of the horrific chassis and screen vibration problem and I'd have likely upgraded but I won't be now. Not a huge deal though.

Oh well.

...this year...the rumor does not say "never."

I use the multitasking/multiwindow capabilities on my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. 2GB RAM, 1600 x 2560 pixels, released in Feb 2014... it runs extremely well.

I believe it. I'm looking forward to possibly getting an Air 2 (or Air 3 if there's a compelling reason) and running iOS 9.

I replaced my Air with an Air 2 solely to test split view in the iOS 9 public beta. PB1 is shockingly good in terms of stability and battery performance, and split view works great (with the caution that if you are using an app that invokes a keyboard you lose all of the screen under the keyboard - that should be obvious and I assume the Android tablets do the same). Right now, it only works with the native iOS apps. Presumably later in the beta process or at least when the public general release comes out it will work with other apps as well.

Excellent.

It is my understanding that iOS apps need to be recompiled to include support for split screen. I read comments from one app developer that said it took about 10 seconds to make a 2-line change to the code to add support. I suspect that actively supported apps will quickly add that support... probably before iOS 9 is released.

Developers are not able/allowed to submit apps compiled with the iOS 9 SDK until Apple says they can which will be when the GM is released in September.

Developers can add support to their apps, they simply cannot release the update to the app store before it's time. Like with every other update to iOS, there will be a flood of updates to apps within the first few weeks of iOS 9's release.

Yes, I just said that lol.

I'm still on the fence about whether it provides any real utility _for me_. I think we might have discussed this quite a while back in a different thread. I definitely understand that other people might find this very useful, so the positive experiences I'm having should be very encouraging. I'm curious to see how it will work with Word or Amazon Prime or other non-native apps. Your info on simple coding sounds promising.

The only thing that seems a little odd, though not a bug, is that you have to invoke slide over first and then split view in a separate step. Not a big deal, though.
