It would a pleasant surprise (and logical) to see an M1 Pro/Max iMac and high-end Mini released next month. That would complete the standard M1 lineup, with the MacPro being something specialised that may be based on some multi-chiplet design using M1 cores.

Apple could also introduce one or two entry level devices (MBP13 & iMac 24) at the same event. That would avoid the potential head-scratching of M2 coming out before the M1 rollout was finished.

I don't think we'll see M2 Pro/Max this year, and the introduction of an M2 16 months after M1 would hopefully indicate that the release cadence is likely to be at least 16-18 months for the Pro/Max machines. This is long enough to deter most people from just "waiting for the next one around the corner".
Maybe not since I’m currently waiting for 5 months for M1max MBP: 1/3 refreshing cycle! So really interested in seeing the new releases, namely the iMac Pro.

Plot twist: this is going the get an M1 Light and become the entry MacBook (no Pro or Air) for 799. /s

Whatever it’ll be, I (like many others) am confused why they’d keep this around. I expected the 14” to be a proper replacement for the 13”.
With the rumors of renaming the Air to just MacBook, it appeared Apple were trying to simplify their lineup - similar to how they did when they released the original iMac.
Keeping the 13” Pro - with the old design no less - just makes the lineup more confusing and messy imo.

Exactly this. People keep saying M1 Pro or Max is better than M2 but for most tasks M2 will be faster in single core and closer to the M1 Pro since there is a 2 core jump for GPU as well. Its taking 2 months for apple to deliver their BTO MacBook Pro. It is difficult to imagine that they are distributing resources like that between M1 and M2 rather than getting their entire Mac lineup out quicker.
Not a chance...the cpu core boost on M2 vs an M1 pro is meaningless
The M1 Pro has 200gbs bandwidth while the M1 and probably M2 will remain at around 68.25 GBps-70, also M2 caped at 16 gb shared Ram
The M1 pro and max have more gpu power, even the binned/lowest M1 pro with 12 gpu core will be better than the M2 10 gpu core
The M2 will be an improved over the M1 for sure, but only in the gpu you will see an significantly improvement thanks to the new gpu core based on the A15. M2 will run cooler, we know that, but M2 will not have the display support either
I can see Apple offering an entry level M2 iMac 27" and M1 pro and M1 max for the higher end but thats for the WWDC i suppose, and in March will see just the Mbp 13" with the M2

Well I couldn’t imagine I’d have to wait 5MONTHS!? and counting, to get a M1max MBP. Also think “just” M1Max on iMac Pro will not happen. Intel new release together with the production delays, may push Apple to go for M2max instead. It surely would look better on their presentation benchmarks…
I don’t think we will see M2 Pro/Max until at least Q2 2023 if the expected 18-24 month release cadence is correct.

It would be highly unlikely for Apple not to release a larger, more powerful iMac this year, so that means M1 Pro/Max.

How come so long for your M1 Max? I’m not in N. America, and my BTO MBP14 M1 Max arrived in 6 weeks (end January) at the early end of the delivery estimate. Was your shipment lost and resent?

Although I would like a 18-24 cadence I suspect it will be shorter for MBP’s. I’m expecting 2xM1max iMac Pro.

Gurman is right; Touch Bar is out. If they put it in this model that means their OS has to support it through 2027-2028 and you know they’ll want to have completely buried it by then.

Apple is shamefully prioritising it’s own orders. So if you order directly from it you’ll get it within 6-8 weeks, if you can’t do that for whatever reason, then you keep getting your order pushed back. This has been going on since end October! And I’m suspicious this will severely backfire within EU.

My wishful plot twist:
Apple new “environmental friendly policy” will offer us the possibility of having the guts of our beloved Macs in whatever configuration, swapped by an updated version for 1/2 price while keeping the chassis. Production and logistics savings coupled with environmental conscience. This will apply only to AS, while a redesign isn’t in place (24/36 months cycle for “notebook”/“desktop”)

this seems so odd ...

who would buy this once the redesigned MB(A) with M2 launches later this year?

MBA M1 hurt MBP M1 sales, so doing this looks like repeating the same thing over and over again

if this is true it is DOA

Releasing a 13" MacBook Pro would have significant work and internal changes beyond the existing Apple Silicon notebooks, as the Touch Bar is currently implemented running on a separate T2 chip running BridgeOS.

I doubt they will be willing to do that sort of extra effort just to keep TouchBar alive.

Not sure what you are talking about. There is already a 13'' MBP with Touchbar and M1. This work has already been done.

It seems like Apple maybe making a confusing mess out of the M-cpu product lineup.

They definitely should do this with the iMac and in fact all macs. I would buy an iMac if Apple did this.

Why would someone buy a MBP without HDMI…

Bringing back HDMI to the MacBook Pro models was the most irrelevant thing they have made. Probably the only reason they did so was because they couldn't somehow put 4 x TB4 on the machine (I don't know if it is a limitation by the chip output) and they wanted to keep the machine able to connect to 4 external screens naturally (without any hub). Not because they "listened" to the user feedback.

Personally there is no reason to include a single purpose port instead of putting a multi-purpose port that can be used as practically anything (Thunderbolt 4). Especially when it is quite easy to use and HDMI to USB-C cable like this one:

also never understood the HDMI complaints because I bought one of these for like $10 for my monitor/projector needs. didn't even need to buy a dongle!

I would imagine this years version of the 13" MacBook Pro will feature the M1Pro chip. Doesn't make sense not to include it in favor of just the M2.
With a lower cost and a smaller size, an M1Pro 13" MacBook Pro would be the perfect laptop for a who lot of people.

Coming to think of it, I am going to bet that ALL of the Macs released in March are going to be smaller lower cost M1Pro based machines. That makes the most sense. Apple needs to sell a whole lot more of their M1Pro chips than just the 14 and 16 Pros that shipped last year to get a good return on their investment.

...And I would also bet that the M2's are coming this summer to the all new Airs and iPad Pros instead.

Amazing work by Apple. They understood that a part of their pro customers appreciate beautiful design and productivity. Nothing to say about it, well actually yes, "Hi good morning I came to buy a MacBook Pro 13''. That will be me in a apple store. Thanks Apple.

That's why I repeat myself we should expect M1 Pro in new MBP 13" :) Not only it solves the relation to Air M1 and even M2 later, but it'll allow to raise the price and people will actually want it. And it's a classic new-tech-sold-from-top approach - lot of people who wanted M1 Pro/Max already got it in larger pricier bodies, the M1 Pro could now come to lower price tier.

It still feels wrong that

1. Apple would release M2 machines before M1 releases are finished
2. Apple would debut M2 with a simple drop-in replacement for a design most people would consider dated

Personally I think the M1 MBP is one of those "golden" devices that is much better than it has any right to be, but to say that you kinda have to not only like the touch bar, but also be fine with the fact that is has basically no ports, and also really value the better screen, speakers and battery life (which is bonkers) over the cheaper MBA most people prefer.

I simply think that this particular device is the one the least people would get exited about out of all possible Mac releases, so no - still makes no sense at all, still doesn't compute.
Absolutely. Surely having an M2 machine out whilst they are still selling their premium models with an M1 variant would reduce sales of the 16 MBPs. People would quite rightly say that they will wait for the M2 variant of the 16 MBPs instead.

this could actually make sense of the senseless ;)

Maybe Apple has very expensive and efficient production lines that can produce these old chassis MBPs for cheaper than the redesigned MBA while still charging more than the redesigned MBA.
