Oh boy, I can't wait to argue with customers trying to use this to buy alcohol and tobacco products. That's going to be fun.

You are right, to be honest. It's a slow Friday after a slow news week with many fringe/boring news topics, and so this is a filler story for a more general audience. I wish it didn't come at the expense of upsetting our most dedicated readers who already know every little detail, but there are always tradeoffs involved with publishing content. One thing I have tried to learn over the years is that it is impossible to please everyone. I hope you know that we certainly try our best to balance real-but-boring news with filler-but-popular stories.
I found the article informative as I wasn't sure if the Wallet app supported this yet, especially after moving to one of the few states with a decent virtual id app and experiencing it for the first time. For people outside the U.S. it matters less, but the title starts with "These 10 U.S. States" so not hard to just scroll passed it!

PA will probably be one of the last holdouts.

I like the idea of having it in my digital wallet as a backup of sorts. But I would never hand my phone over to a cop or anyone else.

Was very excited about this at first but then read a hypothetical realistic scenario someone described.
The cops could get all friendly and say “My handheld scanner doesn’t seem to be working. Would you mind handing over your phone? I’ll just quickly scan on my in-car scanner. Can you please also unlock it so I don’t lose the app?”

Of course everyone thinks they are not gullible but cops do this for a living. They can word it much better to make it sound convincing.
I must not "get it" but what could you have on your phone that you would be afraid of law enforcement seeing?

Planning a bank heist?
Drug deal?

That's what I was thinking! You would think Cali would be the FIRST to signup but Nooooooo hhhhh
Who cares? You can’t use it anywhere. I have tried dozens of bars, shops, grocery stores, even 7/11 and gas stations. Nobody even knows what this even is. It’s going to be years before you can leave your wallet at home even if your state support’s this

I remember when Apple Pay first came out and I would ask the cashier if they accepted AP and the usual answer would be, "What's that?". LOL!

Lol! I went to subway when it launched, one of the first places to accept Apple Pay and the lady was like “yeah idk how to do that sorry”

Now when I try to use the digital license, people think I’m doing fraud.

two practical questions:
1. at the TSA I need to show my boarding pass and ID, does this mean I need to show them my phone once (for the boarding pass), take it back and switch to the other screen (ID) and then show it to TSA again? Feels strange.
2. when this gets decent support (say about half the states start issuing this), can I drive to a state that does not issue these digital DLs without a physical drivers license?
Currently at TSA you only show them your ID. They have all boarding pass info; their system reconciles with this once they scan against your ID.

And if LEO legally asks for ID are you still required to hand over physical ID or will the Digital ID suffice? And what about traffic stops where they take your ID? In those instances you still just hand them your physical ID/DL?

When Apple Pay first came out I shocked a lot of employees who didn’t even realize they offered it haha
I was surprised this was happening to me still even as late as last year. Like wtf? How do you not know what Apple Pay or Google Wallet/Pay is? And this was in a city with a large brand name Tech presence. Some small businesses don't provide this though. So I'm forced to use physical Chipped card.

Iowa was announced as a state onboard with this when Apple first introduced the solution well over a year ago. Iowa has been touting a digital license for multiple years now too. They’re sure taking their sweet time with implementing…

I really want this to come to the UK, but unfortunately the British government would find some way to **** it up if it did.

Otherwise I need to file some report for missing documents and we’d need to get a hearing etc. Instead, if you just give me the phone, we’d be done in 5 mins.”

This is unrealistic, I have been using digital insurance cards for years you can lock the phone so they can’t access anything by triple clicking the lock button.

It will be such a nice feature to use in Canada when it will be avaible in 2050
And PA with a bunch of old geezers in charge; although, somehow we have 5G. Didn't see a speck of 5G in VA or WV when we took our trip to the fair
