„Apple said that it is limiting these changes to the EU because the company is concerned about how alternative app stores and payment methods will impact user privacy and security. Apple claims that users are now at risk for being exposed to malware, illicit and questionable app content, pirated software, scams, and fraud.“

If that is so, Apple, then why have you left and continue to leave MacOS users at risk?

Nope sorry you've lost me there.

Why do many websites support Safari?

Safari on iPhone. Even if they use a different browser on the iPhone it's still the Webkit-engine.

Now those web developers can say to iPhone users: Just download Chrome and they'll get the Chromium and Blink engines.

The web developer might get away with not supporting Safari for iPhone.

Now, it won't work for Safari on the Mac either, and I suffer.

Here is something you haven't thought of: I consider all developers and programmers to be evil and my enemy until proven otherwise. They can do so much wrong to you. I like they're treated by Apple as second class citizens with little power. They were forced to use the App Store or go out of business.
Well, this is the whole point of the DMA, Apple has too much power. Sounds ridiculous that you consider all developers and programmers as evil, especially considering all the weird hoops Apple has been hopping around to ditch their social obligation of paying taxes.

Not everyone, just those who disagree with me and want iOS to be different than it has been for over 10 years. You want the changes. I just want it to be like before.
Now I am surprised you even use the internet. Maybe we should go back to iOS 1.0, ditch the app store!

Emphasis mine

Those Norwegian prisons must be really good!

Since so few people side load and use multiple app stores on Android, I assume it isn't an import feature for most users.

Walled gardens are amazing if you have access to them. Have you seen some of them in London? Also, even if you're in a walled garden, you can go outside. It's called going on a Safari.

PS
Norway has some of the best prison's in the world. The best in the sense that some of them aren't really prisons at all.

Move to Ireland.

Lol. So what this comes down to is fear. Fear that an app you use withdraws from the Apple App Store. Sure, that could happen. The likely outcome is that the app will still be available there, just available somewhere else, and it may offer something different. The developer has choices; you have options.

Of course it's fear. Fear of iOS becoming more inconvenient to use.

I don't need freedom, choice or features for my mobile phone. I want convenience and I'm willing to pay for it.

I don't want options. I want one option.

You'll be able to choose not to install those apps if you wish 🙂

Besides it's not going to be in anyone's interest, especially not Apple's, to make it difficult to install apps.

Similarly, reputable developers of good apps are not going to release those apps with malware in. Would be a somewhat terrible business move.

Developers having choices is nothing but good news, if Apple want to ensure they're attracting and retaining the best apps they'll have to compete for their business. This is how a market should work.

Yes, but what if I want the app?

Today, I don't have to make a choice since the app will be available in the App Store.

I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand. I want what's best for me, not developers.

They must be nice, but I also stopped using side wheels on my bike since I was 4 or 5. Yet, everyone is free to use them for as long as they wish.

Apple doesn't need to hold everybody's hand to protect them from the 'dangerous world', but then again, that is not what this is all about. It is all about the Apple Church™ and their cash flow. Their narrative is to enable their apostles to follow their messiah Cook and preach to the holy Jobs, so that we all ignore the power they have gained over the years and take a blind eye to there practices.

I am aware, that is the reason I put it there.

Anyway, you'll most likely have to deal with it anyway (that is the fact that the DMA will come to Norway) and you can, unlike Norwegian prisons, stay in Apple's prison walls walled garden for as long as you like. I am curious to know if you will come and play outside if one day that app you really like moves to another app store (or hopefully as a direct download from their website).

I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand. I want what's best for me, not developers.
Imagine a world without progression, we'd still try to figure out how to make a fire.

I'm the inventor of selfish computing.

I would be willing to sacrifice the well-being of million of developers to keep iOS being convenient for me.
In some of your replies the totalitarian leader in you is really convincing 😂

Well, if you'd ever decide to come outside and play in the snow, I hope to see you! Good night

So you hate change in general and think everyone else should too. Got it.

I dislike change for the worse, with a passion. And I especially dislike changes which make my life more inconvenient.

One of the great things about iOS is a lack of huge changes. You had iOS 7 which revamped the user interface and you had going from a button to Face ID. But in essence, iOS is pretty much the same today as it was in 2007. Pretty amazing!

I want iOS to be just this simple thing where you don't have to think too much. Everything should just work (together) and I should just use the device.

If I want to do something complex, I'll do it on a Mac.

Yes, that's one of the reasons I'm against the DMA. I don't want any power transfer from Apple to developers.

I don't consider all developers and programmers as evil, only until proven otherwise. I deny them the presumption of innocence.

I don't believe any company or person have a social obligation to pay taxes. They do have a legal obligation to do so. Personally, I try to pay as little taxes as possible and to delay paying it for as long as possible. One exception: I won't pay $50 to get a reduction of $30 for example.

I use the Internet but I am more of a native application supporter than a web browser supporter.

The App Store is such a great thing because it took something that was inconvenient but necessary and made the process almost effortless.

You know that you can easily swap stores, load apps and then change back to your “mainland” country, your apps will still be there. On my Swiss AppleID I got apps of almost half EU, Asia and about 6000 songs and a few films I purchased on Turkish store. Just fyi

edit: just be sure that you dont have any subscription such as AppleTV, Music etc (AC+ is ok) active.

Yeah, I know! I currently do that now and have done for many years. My point was which version of iOS 17.4 will I get. The EU one or the UK one, and how can I ensure it’s the EU one with the minimal amount of effort.

if I cannot get the job done with Apple Apps and a short list of developers (<15), does not need doing on IOS. The same applies to the Mac OS. Very selective Apps get installed. Add, easier to manage, less system resource, less opportunity to be compromise. So far awesome results.

For once I wish I was migrated to EU instead of Australia.
But nah, I’m good. (Not by missing out on alternative App Store tho)
The amount of pearl clutching around this is kinda hilarious, some people have bought into Apple's PR line really hard.
More like a majority of forum users and maybe their friends. They just choose to blindly believe whatever Apple tells them to without thinking twice and apply some critical thinking to the issue.
It’s appalling how much damage Apple has done to this debacle.
buy an android phone then!

This is just ridiculous the whole thing. Dont people understand what they are buying??

If you dont like what Apple supplies, there ARE alternatives.

People are behaving as if Apple are an evil monopoly - how can this be the case when there are alternatives.....
So, let’s say Android doesn’t exist and Apple is the only smartphone OS provider on the planet, and people hates iOS and what iOS has to offer. What’s your argument then? Build their own device? Or just don’t use smartphone altogether?

Talk is cheap.
