After you buy a gazillion Mac desktops you slowly realize all you need is a MacBook Pro with a monitor. Happens to us all at different stages.
As someone who’s currently on that combination , I disagree .

I use my Mac at home for the most part , so keeping it on in clamshell model has damaged the battery .

Going Mac Mini + iPad Pro this time around

Tall buildings often have a light well in the middle. The new mini could (have all the ports and) be tall with a hole down the middle for heat dissipation and dual use as an Apple Pencil holder. Tim would be happy because folks would have to buy the more expensive adjustable height version of the display... wink wink

They are probably going to ruin the mini by taking away the ports, just like they did with the iMac. Guess it will only have usb-c/thunderbolt ports, maybe a headphone jack if we're lucky... *sadface*

I hope Apple can "explore" putting 16 GB of RAM in the base model iMac while they're at it... there's something wrong with having only 8 GB of RAM in a $1299 desktop when you can find Android phones with 16 GB of RAM on Amazon for $500 or less. 😬
Nothing wrong from the point of view of the corporate objective and the demanding shareholders.

I like the new Mac Mini idea. I wish they also made a lower end 32" display with the quality of the studio display or iMac. I love 32" but that price (and specs) is just overkill for me.

Don't care if the Mac miniii is any smaller, just want it to lose NO ports. Currently the mini pro has built-in power supply, Ethernet w/10GBe as option, 4 Thunderbolt/USB-C, HDMI, 2 old-style USB, headphones. Every single one of these ports is super useful and needed. If they make it smaller hopefully they'll have two rows of ports to fit them all in, and keep the internal power supply. If they move to an external power supply that will be terrible.

Allegedly it will become taller. Maybe they’ll put the power supply in the bottom part without enclosure like in the Mac Studio.

If consumers as a group would vote "NO" on 8GB base (by NOT buying 8GB Macs), Apple would very quickly up the RAM. But instead, we gripe/moan/complain and then buy anyway
This is the thing I disagree with:

Apple are perfectly happy to sell you and underquipped Mac if that means you upgrade earlier.
But they‘re also laughing all their way to the bank when selling you 16GB/512GB for a $400 surcharge.

The only thing that may make them reconsider: Withholding purchases altogether.
Not buying a new Mac until a new model or refresh comes with a sensible base configuration.

Sadly, your old Mac will probably (and despite Apple‘s attempts at greenwashing) it likely to become unsupported, „vintage“ and „obsolete“ before they up the memory configurations on their new models.

This setup works just fine for AAPL. We Apple consumers enable such things by opting to "buy anyway" and "pay anything" to do so. They get heavily rewarded in many ways for opting for "too little base RAM in 2024" and similar. If consumers as a group would vote "NO" on 8GB base (by NOT buying 8GB Macs), Apple would very quickly up the RAM. But instead, we gripe/moan/complain and then buy anyway. They earn their bonuses. Wall Street applauds "another record quarter...". Media refers to them as genius business people. Etc.
People would have to not buy macs at all, and the few people who buy macs would have to spend the 200$ they charge for the RAM in order for apple to consider that a factor.

But most people don’t even know how much RAM their computer has, so apple is doing what any company would do: getting away with as much as they can for as long as they can.

I went ahead and got another Mini just in case the M4 ends up being a regression like the iMac. M2, M4, all the same for my purposes.

Considering these will be low powered, like the Apple TV, I see no reason why it’d need an external power supply and could be potentially fan less. I agree though, no ports should be lost.

People on the internet are saying that the M4 in the iPad Pro has 4 Thunderbolth controllers.
So I pedice/wish that the new Mac mini will have 4 ports where you can connect a monitor. Three USB-C and one HDMI port. One more port than the M3 MacBook Pro (Will the new MacBook Pro M4 also have 4 ports like the M3 Pro?)
Two USB-C ports will be on the back and one on the front. Like the Mac Studio. But the M4 will only support 2 displays. Like the M3 MacBook Pro.
Because the Thunderbold controller for the HDMI port has some bandwidth left over. There will be an SD card slot on the front, next to the USB-C port. And the Ethernet, headphone and power ports on the back.
The Mac mini M4 Pro will then support more displays. (There's a chance that only the Pro will have all the front ports.)

I would love to see Cupertino once again embrace the one-and-done precept (and the core of their ethos) behind their AIO iMac lineup by offering port-parity between the Mini and their 24" iMac...take it home, put it on the desk, turn it on, and be done. Keep the Mini for folks for whom "upgrading their processor needs more frequently" is a must, or for those who would like to opt for a monitor/display of their choice.

While they're at it, churn their under-performing-in-sales Studio Displays into a reimagined 27" iMac with Pro and Max M4 chips and port-parity with the Studio desktop for we one-and-done folks and keep the Studio for those whose needs mirror the Mini users (above).

Finally, grab some of the current production run of 28", 32", 42" HDR panels and (finally, at long last) serve up an HDR iMac with Pro, Max and Ultra M4 chips for we ≥5-year ROI users and keep Studio and Mac Pro for the more, er, particular and selective users.

Steve spent over a decade fostering a solid user base of loyal and enthusiastic iMac users that the post-Steve Mac desktop team has decided to squander...how does a CEO allow that to happen? No doubt there's been an incessant clamor from the ≥27" iMac user base for a new M-series lineup, so, um, what's the hold-up, Tim?

All-in-one is what Apple is. :)

I’m in the market for a new stationary computer. Ideally a 30” iMac Pro. Now my options are either to buy a 6 year old 32” super expensive display for graphical designers and 2 year old Mac Studio M2, wait forever for a new large iMac, wait a year for a new Mac Studio or wait a few months for a budget mac mini M4 and 2 year old 27” studio display.

It’s a sucky situation. Apple really messed up the stationary computer lineup for 2024.

Perhaps but I’m afraid those days are gone. And the “incessant clamor” is actually just a few very vocal diehard enthusiasts and are no longer reflective of the general Mac market (which seems more and more enamored with laptops).

I'm thrilled I got the M2 Pro mini when it came out for a number of reasons. But I'm guessing the new form factor will lose ports. I also think it will lose the internal power supply. But with the Apple silicon the mini's sip power, so a relatively small 65W brick should be able to run it easily enough through a USB-C cable. The smaller form factor will likely have more thermal issues resulting in more need to run the fan, a smaller fan that has to spin faster, and so is a touch louder. So overall, in many ways, I'm expecting the M4 Pro mini to be a slightly worse machine (obviously made up for by the superior chip). Smaller form factor is nice, but will make no difference sitting on a typical office desk. But Apple should be able to make these smaller machines cheaper so maybe they can keep the price the same.

I'm stoked on the new Mac Mini. I've been waiting ever so patiently for the M4 version. I'm ready to pull the trigger!

And then what? Take the M4 back in time to get Monterey on it? Your post quoted my use case that your unsolicited suggestion completely obliterates.
This kind of advice is why I wasn’t asking for advice.
No, because I think the M4 is a great upgrade and it's only a few months away. Or get an M3 upgrade at a discount. The M2 has always been a terrible upgrade, even when it just came out.

Almost certainly because they can then use the same 6GB DDR5 RAM chips x2 in the base M4 for 12GB that they can use 3x of in the Pro for the base 18GB, that is assuming the memory controller config remains the same in the M4. Only reason 8GB was still the base on the M3 is becuase they either have/had a large supply of 4GB chips or they were able to get them very cheap. If Apple can get 6GB chips for cheaper in bulk now and have one base component, you can bet the M4 will have 12GB standard.

The better 3nm process of the M4 might mean more memory controllers and the Pro chip this time around can go back to a 256-bit memory bus and both Max chips at 512-bit. If that is the case we'll probably see the base RAM on the M4 Pro go to 24GB (4x 6GB) base and the Max to 48GB (4x 12GB) base. I tend to guess the reductions in memory speed on the M3 Pro/Max were compromises to get to 3nm. If that is the case and it's been fixed on M4, I think a lot of people will be happy this fall.

This the M3 Pro SOC. They'd have to make it signicantly larger to go 4x RAM chips. I don't see them doing it. They wanna give people a reason to get the Max.

I fear what you, and I, want from a Mini is unlikely. It'll be gimped in all manner of ways, while the Apple-defenders will be ready and waiting to remind us it has a faster processor and the packaging is now smaller, and that's all that matters.
