I think YouTube will be forced to build an app. They can't just let TikTok dominate this platform.

By the way, 2023 revenues:

YouTube: $7.9B
TikTok: $13.2B

And TikTok is growing much faster.
You’re wrong. That’s the revenue for one quarter. YouTube’s revenue for the whole year was 30 billion

AirPods Max suck compared to countless sets of wired headphones. Sure, the noise cancellation features are first class, but the audio quality is no great shakes. Furthermore, AirPods Max aren’t expensive in the world of headphones. They’re expensive in terms of the trade offs you have to live with in audio, ergonomics, compatibility and so forth but you can spend many thousands on high end headphones. Characterizing AirPods Max as a “hit” is a reach at best.
Seriously. Stop trolling me. And in further news, No one was comparing them to wired headphones. And they have sold very very well. Just not as well (probably) as XM4’s and the Bose. Which was exactly my point. Even, in your words, ‘it’s a reach, at best'. The point is still valid, it just becomes subjective.

Reading in more detail, MS is offering Excel and Word with Apple not offering Pages and Numbers - interesting.

And Lego Builder should be fun …
That's what I also noted.

Seems Microsoft is doing more to make this into some kind of a productivity device than Apple is.

Strange to me how people are often slagging MS off, and yet, here it is, supporting Apple's product.

MS have always done that. Bill Gates was always an Apple Fanboy. He said MS were a software Company first. And that’s why I still use MS Office 365 on the Mac. They look after their base.

Native/available is much different that optimized. Y’all think J Crew, who just came out of bankruptcy in 2020, has an app for the VP ha. It’s the basic LiDAR app you can already get I’m sure, along with Lowes and others.

But of a risk that anything interesting / premium (below those apps mentioned) is pulled by developers before launch as they're not optimised for Vision OS, which will lead to a handful of major apps, and then a load of dross which doesn't work great or offer much.

It absolutely is, but would I want to expose my $3.5k headset to the moisture, steam, grease etc that inevitably come with cooking? Probably not.

But in a few years with much more inexpensive AR glasses that look and feel like my regular glasses, yes I can see that.
This is very true.

When I am cooking something particularly steamy or have fat splattering when frying, I'm often worried about using my AWU2… never mind using a large polished visor.

remember when TVOS launched. Developers rushed to put apps out for it, until they realised Apple had priced the hardware too high and its market share was next to nothing.

So many have been discontinued since.

There are even hardly any stand alone Apple Watch Apps that go further than push notifications anymore

As MKBHD said on Waveforms (he has used the AVP 4 times now). They had a full scale Alfa Romeo F1 C43 and it broke a part, and you could move each part around. Apparently the functionality was outstanding and you could do things you simply cannot do it actual reality.

Having the ability to manipulate a virtual 3D object in actual size and in real time without having to physically make the object (3D printing or moulding etc) and not just have it on some lame arse 2D monitor is ground breaking.

3D immersive content, whilst nice is just the low picking fruit.
yes - it will be invaluable for people trying out things at home before either purchasing them or just practicing. Home schooling, sports, mechanics, art, museums, science ...
The list is IMHO endless and opposite to other vendors Apple is doing it right from the beginning. They are concentrating on the high end with the hardware enabling a fluent experience and it looks like the capability of the App have improved since they published the development.

In the beginning Apple was reluctant even to confirm the 90 fps ( which is easy to quote back with the 12 ms maximum delay to make it feel real. No the confirmed 90, 96 and 100 Hz refresh rate - which is better than anticipated. Looks like this is the right approach to put an enable in the market and to let developers play with it.
It's so funny to see productivity apps being designed for a device, which is by definition anti-productivity (worse input, worse display of data).
Depending on the application it might be an even more powerful tool than you'd expect. Manufacturing optimization, interior and exterior design, architecture, 3D CAD and CAM or electrical engineering - I see limitless opportunities.

For me this is a perfect market launch and I hope Apple will be overwhelmed by the orders they are receiving. I am sure they will do their best to make this a success and I am defiantly buying one once it will be available in my area in Europe.
And I'll buy it for productivity while traveling - having a large display with me for pivot tables in Excel and for crafting presentations will be my killer APP to start with - of course this will be a nice toy for watching films on a rainy day after customer visits traveling alone. Bt that's not the reason for buying one - that's a surplus.

What do you think is the longest session you can do on AVP? Because you mention "doing some work with it", then "watching some films". I know it varies between people, ambient temperature etc.

Honestly I don't see anyone using this for more than 90-120 minutes, before needing a long break. The battery also seems designed for this, absolutely no need for a longer battery life, because the human user will give up long before.

Where are you getting 'often single' from?
Read the threads here.
Some of us have concerns about isolation and how we would incorporate this device when living with a partner.
Many, many, have said this is not an issue as they are single or live alone.
So… yeah.

However, you're going off on a tangent that was not the point of my post. 🙂

Sweatiness will definitely have to be dealt with. So hopefully Apple have put in the resources to make sure we don't boil our heads. 🙂

Even with over ear headphones my ears get warm and if it is mid summer there will be sweat. Not dripping rivers of the stuff, but enough to be a bit uncomfortable.

Now this almost full face computer strapped to a face with little by way of air escape is definitely going to be a challenge.

Also, for people who wear make up, this is going to be a HUGE issue.

Smears and runny make up is not the look most are going for.

No, your point was that Pornography is going to be the market driver. I can’t fathom for the life of me why you’d think that. The AVP has so much more to offer. But each to their own. It’s your money 🧐

Initially, I commented that this is too rich for my blood. However, the more I think about it, the more I see this device replacing my iPad M2. It also appears to make accessing information and managing daily routines more convenient. Still, I think I’ll wait around for GEN 2, and a more refined ecosystem. 🤔

What is a life-sized Clippy?

We're bound to see many apps on the AVP store that do not go further than slapping their content in 2D against a generic 3D environment unfortunately (Carrot app could have at least simulated the forecast weather in the 3D space instead of having a floating 2D table) - or not go deep enough (like that JCrew app, it's nice to see the clothes in 3D, but it's an unrealistic view that really makes no difference).

More will come for sure (hopefully).

Ahead of the Apple Vision Pro launching on February 2, developers are in the process of preparing their apps for the mixed reality headset. So far, over 250 apps with native support for visionOS have been submitted to Apple, according to a source.

By natively supporting visionOS, apps can take full advantage of "spatial" design elements and offer more immersive features.

In addition to some Apple apps, well-known third-party apps that will natively support visionOS at launch include Airmail, Box, CARROT Weather, Fantastical, Facades, JigSpace, MUBI, Night Sky, OmniPlan 4, Parcel, PCalc, Red Bull TV, Sky Guide, Tides, Webex, Zoom, and more, according to data compiled by app analytics firm Appfigures.

Microsoft will offer a variety of native visionOS apps at launch, such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Teams, based on App Store marketing images shared by developer Steve Troughton-Smith on Mastodon and @M1Astra on X/Twitter. Additional images show native apps for Crunchyroll, J.Crew, LEGO Builder's Journey, Lowe's, and others.

In addition to native apps, iPhone and iPad apps will automatically be available on the Vision Pro, unless a developer opts out using the App Store Connect tool. As a result, Apple says more than one million apps will be available for the headset at launch.

Apple last week listed some additional entertainment apps that will be available on the Vision Pro at launch, including Disney+, ESPN, NBA, MLB, PGA Tour, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, IMAX, and TikTok. Some of the apps will be native, while others will be compatible iPad apps.

Disney+ will natively support the Vision Pro at launch, and its app will offer users a selection of 3D movies to watch on the headset, such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Elemental, and Encanto.

"At launch, viewers can transform their space into one of four Disney+ environments, bringing them even closer to the story," said Disney, in a press release last week. "Each environment includes animations and sounds that make the space feel alive, and Easter eggs from films and franchises that will surprise and delight fans."

Some popular apps will not offer Vision Pro apps of any kind at launch, including Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube, according to Bloomberg, but users can still access these services via Safari. It's also unclear if Meta-owned apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp will be available on the headset at launch.

With around two weeks remaining until the Vision Pro launches, there is still time for developers to prepare their apps, so expect more to follow soon.

Most of you are probably much too young to remember the release of the very first iPad (14 years ago). That only had unmodified iPhone apps, as well - if you can remember. Scalled up 2x to make it to market. After some time, users and developers decided how things would go, as usual, and now it's the best tablet there is for doing nearly everything tablet-y. VR is a giant risk for any company. However I Imagine in a few years, ideas such as the ones surrounding first-release devices will be useless reads and greatly passed off as nostalgic misses. Allow users and devs to tackle this at their pace, and you will (mostly) be left satisfied. Calm down.
