I think Apple could mop the floor with Kindle, both design-wise and interface-wise, but the market isn't really proven yet. (They might even be able to do it on cost if they don't use cell towers to download the books, but instead go for the familiar docking method.) I don't know a lot of people buying eBooks, which is unlike the proven market for MP3 players (when iPod came out), and cell phones (when iPhone came out).

Think of the school and college text book market. H_U_G_E. I was paying USD 600 a QUARTER in Business School for text books. A ebook reader even if it focused only on text books and/or scientific/business journals would be a huge hit.

Tapered Design

Is it just me? or does the tapered design seem run against conventional mac design? I just don't see them introducing a tapered design to a portable laptop, ie. sony. Apple, i think one could infer, is observant of symmetry in all of their products, and I just don't see this product breaking that pattern.

Apple no longer seem to release breathtaking computers with features light-years ahead of the competition. This has been proven with all the concept images which look like modified Dell or Sonys currently on the market.

I'm not sure I understand how fan-produced Photoshop images based on speculation about an unannounced product prove that Apple no longer releases breathtaking computers.

NORAD just reported seeing Steve above Moffit Field, flying North. Reporting from my Touch...

Whoa

Wow... almost 500 posts of people complaining and praising and arguing about a product that we know absolutely nothing about whatsoever. Could we wait until after the keynote maybe so at least we know what we're talking about?

If the screen could swivel 180 degrees around and fold down so the screen was facing upward laying flat, covering the keyboard, the two sloped surfaces would make a wonderful angle to work on; that would be much like a drawing desk and great for Multitouch and better viewing then if it were lied just flat.

That sounds pretty plausible, actually.

My problem with that is that I don't see people using a tablet computer on a desk, but they would carry them around, instead. In which case (with a swivel screen) the taper would weight the tablet away from your body, making it awkward to carry.

If you remove the screen, you get the thick end on the bottom, which would be easier to carry (I think). Also, you would get an overall lighter tablet.

There's still a lot of problems with my idea, because for one, you've got a body-less notebook sitting around, which is pretty "un-Apple." Also, if you follow the docking station rumour, you would have three parts (screen, body, dock) which could prove pretty confusing.

Still, I wonder what is behind the screen, if anything.

Haha.. the funniest thing on wired so far. It's obviously an Apple (wireless) keyboard edited in photoshop. They forget to lower the key.. If You close the the screen then all of the button are pressed!

PS: If wired's is true, then I think Apple are losing their taste of art..

I have one too! Here's my.. macbook air:

that looks very nice, way better then wired's version.

awfull photoshop!

if you close the case of the portable you'll find that one side is about 2 inch and the other about 0.8 ich

So it's aimed at rich people that like new and cool stuff that is pointless and overpriced? I really hope this thing is different from the rumors and is actually something logical.

Well, it's aimed at me. I walk around with my notebook in my hand all day, carrying it from meeting to meeting, and I travel frequently. Weight, battery life, and size are by far the most important issues to me. Given that, I certainly don't view this as just for rich people, pointless, or illogical.

Never mind moaning, what's your guess?

It's a rumour site for crying out loud. This is what we do!

The other problem with previous tablet computers is that the manufacturer and software company (in previous cases Microsoft) attempt to put a full functioning OS into the tablet…. Herewith lies the problem… is not plausible to have a full functioning OS in a tablet and more to the point not necessary….

Agreed. This is why I have my concept using "OS X touch" (iPhone, iPod touch) when detached, and not using the main processor, USB ports, keyboard, et cetera, which are housed in the body.

the tapered design reminds me slightly of the Sony VIAO...which isn't entirely a bad thing. Just not very mac-like...yet.

Then again, neither were Intel processors x years ago...:apple:

Please, Please, PLEASE, Someone find me the apple patent that showed a compressible Ethernet port making it the size of a USB port! I swear I've seen one on this site. Thanks in advance.
