I was planning on selling my 13" MacBook Pro and replacing it with the 14" MacBook Pro. No way in hell am I doing that now. Here is why after having both now:

1. The 13" is thin and light. I KNOW the specs of the 14" say it isn't that much thicker and heavier, but, damn it, when I have them both, it just doesn't feel like that. The 13" just feels SO MUCH more portable than the 14".

2. Battery life on the 14" is trash compared to the 13". I KNOW the specs say it shouldn't be that much difference, but IT IS. My 13" is lasting HOURS longer than the 14".

3. No notch. It just is what it is. I can't stop seeing it.

4. Temperatures. Again, I KNOW the 14" shouldn't be getting hot, but damn it, IT IS. I can feel the heat randomly ramp up randomly during normal use. This just DOES NOT HAPPEN on the 13".

5. Touchbar is gone. I know some people hate it. I generally prefer it being there.

That said, I am keeping both.... because the 14" is crushing the 13" in regard to performance when I have CPU and GPU intensive work. It just is what it is. But the 13" will be my primary portable/casual use MacBook.

So, my take away is this, it is probably going to be a LONG TIME until Apple releases another MacBook Pro that checks all these boxes. (5 will never be checked again). I just don't see the notch going away for AT LEAST 3 generations. Battery life and heat and are going to be hard for them to ever match the 13" again because people are only going to be demanding more performance from here on out.

So, just think about tossing your 13", because it may be a long time to find such a damn good MacBook again.
Dude, these are mostly my thoughts exactly.

I was never in the market for the new Pros, impressive as they are, but I really do love my M1 MacBook Air. It’s a powerhouse, it’s super portable, it still looks great-industrial looking in space gray, and it’s damn efficient. I went with a base 7-core GPU model but upped RAM to 16GB since I don’t do graphic intensive stuff but do have many apps open and tabs, plus the future proofing extra RAM can afford.

Have you done a test where you switch work loads? Maybe a reason the 14 is not lasting as long is because you are doing those heavy workloads, where as the m1 load is a lot lighter we should expect that to sip battery. I would try and stress the m1 a bit more. I think that will be more interesting and may make you love the 14 more. Also XDR has higher peak brightness so that will hit the battery too.

And that was when I realized this person doesn’t think at all like I do, and that I could dispense with everything else they said.

Yep...can't have it all. I dislike owning multiple machines but it's really the only way to go about it I guess. Sometimes I want to game but of course those machines are bulkier/hotter/louder. Sometimes I want the lightest and thinnest thing possible, but of course gaming or intensive work is a struggle.

I wish there was a "goldilocks" device because I hate having multiple devices but it just doesn't exist. One day...maybe.

If you have the M1 MBP already of course it depends on whether the new MBP is worth it to you.

But if you’re buying new, especially if you want 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, the new 14 inch is the way to go since their prices are very similar. A $300 difference only.

Just return it , is not normal that your 14” to get hot just for normal use. Mine it doesnt, even in Maya i think around the keyboard and bottom of the case it is around 40-41C

Yes the M1 is for casual users ir for those who use just the cpu heavily, but for the others more ports, more external monitors more graphic power, far better display..and so on

I love my M1 MacBook Pro. Bought it last Christmas and its been a great experience, performance and battery life are really good. I'm indifferent about the Touch Bar and I guess that's because I get to do what I want with it just as easy as if I didn't. Both the new 2021 MBPs are targeted at a specific audience as reviews such as The Verge points out. If you are not doing most of the workloads its designed for (video editing, graphic design, photo editing, STEM), its best you save your money and go for something cheaper. Even for me, I think the Air M1 would have been a cheaper, excellent choice. Its just that I never had a Touch Bar model, Apple worked out all the kinks of the 2016 to Early 2020 Intel models with the M1 MBP, it has a nicer display, better audio speakers and its a logical successor to my MBP 2015.

My brother has a 2017 MacBook Pro four port model and even for him, that's a notebook that's still more than powerful for his needs. Coming from a Dell Latitude 2005, he should know. Watching lots of reviews about the new model, with exception to those who just like really nice things, I think even folks with models going back as far as 2016 don't really need to buy one.

The technology is so good these days, even Apple proves it with how far back they support Monterrey on certain models. That really and your workload should determine if you get one. I personally just used the 5 year rule on mine and wanted something I could keep updated since I am leaving the 2015 on Mojave for the foreseeable future.

More than 1% of people are pros at something they use their laptop for. And many also have graphics-intensive hobbies, or whatever.

For me, and no doubt some others, it's more about screen space. I always use every cranny and want more. I'd happily buy a 19" Mac laptop if they offered one. Without the top processors would be fine if it lowered the cost.
Maybe you should just carry around an iMac. It would be cheaper and suit your needs better.

why do people buy/drive BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lincoln, Tesla and Porsches? I really don't understand why people are spending so much money when you can get a Chevrolet Spark or Hyundai Accent which also takes you exact the same way from A to B?

My M1 Air ran too hot with my workload, so I'm trading it in on a MBP Max with more RAM. Yes, it's heavier, but you can't make an omlette without breaking some eggs. :). And I definitely don't need a 3rd Mac. (I have 2 Mac's, and 3 Windows PC's).

No chance I'd go back to the 13" M1 Pro. No chance. The 16" towers over it and simply crushes it. And I'd feel the same way about the 14". The design is better in every way on these new MBPs and the performance is spectacular.

If someone already has an M1 Air or M1 Pro and it is not underperforming for their workflow then the upgrade to the M1 Max/Pro is just an impulse purchase. Funny thing is come next year they are most likely to upgrade again because the M2 will trump the M1 - quite obviously. Just buy what you need. What I am wondering is why so many M1 Air/Pro 13 owners are accepting the measly trade in values to upgrade. That is the worst part. I have a 13" M1 Pro with 16GB Ram and 512GB HDD perfect condition.. I checked what apple would offer.. £500 lol!

I would expect the M1 Pro and Max MacBooks to outperform a one year old model that isn't even supposed to be in the same category. However what did you find so wrong with the performance of the M1 13? Just curious because I don't know anyone who has been disappointed or even constrained with performance? Its that part of the argument that fascinates me. As for design being better... that's subjective. Personally I disagree with that one. The design of the new MacBook Pros are a step backwards.

Where in my statement did I say I found something wrong with the performance of the 13" model? And of course design is subjective and is pure opinion. If it wasn't I would have said "From a design standpoint, it is a statement of fact that the new models are superior to the old ones."

Stop looking for arguements that aren't there. If you like your 13" model that's great, no one is saying you can't use it or that there is anything wrong with it.

Actually it was a question which given the topic of the thread is perfectly reasonable. What was lacking in the M1 Pro 13 that made you want to upgrade? You use phrases such as 'crushes' as if the M1 13 is somehow competing with the new models. The M1 13 was released an entire year ago, they paved the way for Apple Silicon. There has always been an entry level Pro model along with the higher spec 16 inch models with the old intel MBPs, so I do not consider the MBP 14 or 16 as any sort of replacement for the M1 13 - they are not in the same category.

Lol why do you care? I know when the 13” model was released and don’t care that you own an entry level 13” model. I couldn’t care less that you don’t like that I’m comparing the previous model to the new model.

Its really weird that you care what others decide they want to upgrade to. Because you decided not to upgrade then no one else should either? I gave my opinion on why I wouldn’t go back to the 13” model because I find the 16” model to be better in every way. Better screen, speakers, performance, and in my opinion, design.

Why do any of us care? Its a discussion forum, if you are triggered by simple discussion then I really do wonder what you're doing here!

At what point did I say no one should upgrade? Life is too short, people should do what the heck they want. My old curiosity (and this doesn't specifically apply to you) is that the M1 was universally lauded this time last year, every tech enthusiast, journalist and podcaster under the sun praised its performance. Now all of a sudden the rhetoric is that it is slow, underpowered, I've heard nonsense such as not good enough to edit 4k video etc.. I'm curious about the U-Turn in opinion not on individuals right to upgrade. Do we get so caught up in the Apple hype machine that we are actually disingenuous about our initial reactions to products? I'm just curious and a discussion forum is an ideal point to have that.. urm.. discussion.

Oh so forceful with that exclamation point! Lol I couldn’t be further from being triggered unless I was in a coma. I just think its weird that you care why other people moved on from the 13” M1 model. You already know why they did it (performance, screen, speakers, design) but you are asking questions like its the exact same model as last years and your brain can’t wrap around why people purchased a newer model. You know that the newer models have ports again, MagSafe, a better screen, Promotion, better speakers, more RAM options, and better performance. You don’t need me to tell you these things.

You can use your 13”’model for the next 5 years for all i care. If you are happy with it, great! I think the newer models are better. That doesn’t mean your 13” model is bad, and I never said it was or that it was lacking in any way.
