Because it is not even matching the specs bro. I am getting MAYBE 7-8 hours on 14", whereas I am legit getting like 20 hours on the 13" some days. It's a massive difference.
I agree that the difference is massive. I used to get around 18 hours for standard productivity tasks and web browsing. With the same usage on my new 14" MacBook Pro I get around 12 hours max. Now the question that everybody should answer for him/herself is, do you need the extra battery life? Do you think that the new features (Display, speakers) and the much better performance are worth it? I answered these questions with yes and I couldn't be happier. The new MacBook Pro lasts me though a full day and has juice available for the evening. It offers all day battery life. The 13" MacBook Pro offers a two days battery life. That is basically the difference. I would go on a weekend trip with my 13" MBP without taking the charger, but with the 14" I would always take the charger with me. Is it a big deal? For me no.
I enjoy the great display, speakers and the Retina resolution. I don't miss my M1 13" MacBook Pro.

Agreed. Last year with COVID and at-home school we got our 3 teenage daughters the M1 MBA so they would not have to use the horrific chromebooks the school issued them. These will be their college computers we just opted to buy them early because of COVID.

Anyway, I work in software development and compile code often during the day. Their new MacBook Airs could compile code faster than my 2018 16-inch Intel Core-i9 MacBook Pro. The only advantage to me on the new MacBook pros is compiling code faster and therefore being more productive. If somebody is not compiling code or rendering video or doing some performance intensive task that pauses their workday, then the MacBook Air is such an better option on price and portability.
Most studios have render farm servers and these new MBP’s are designed for mobile/field work. I suspect even the Apple advertised professionals offload the majority of their work to the studio render farms.

I remember using an SGI Sparc workstation to render a minute 3D animation of the solar system which took approximately a day or less granted if the system did not crash during the process. I completed a 3D animation of 3 minutes on a PowerBook G3 that took approximately 10 days and that was me tweaking render settings. Granted the SGI with MAYA did a superior job but the cost and time was astronomical compared to my G3 Pismo at a fraction of the cost.

Dude, these are mostly my thoughts exactly.
M1 13 looks so thin compared to the 14. I had both the 14 and 16 for 3 days and returned both yesterday. The screens on those two are amazing but the 14‘s 1 inch bump is really not that much larger than the M1 13 and the 16 is just not a practical laptop due to its weight, overall footprint and thickness. I really think the M1 13 is one of the best laptops in the market - very powerful and astounding battery life all wrapped up in a compact, sleek form factor.

If you have the M1 MBP already of course it depends on whether the new MBP is worth it to you.

But if you’re buying new, especially if you want 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, the new 14 inch is the way to go since their prices are very similar. A $300 difference only.
Yeah if I were in the market for a new MacBook and needed 512GB with 16GB of RAM, the 13” makes no sense. Even the $600 difference between a 512/16GB MacBook Air and base 14” Pro, which I know is still a considerable amount of money starts to muddy the water. I paid $1050 with tax for my Air (256GB with 16GB RAM) with student discount. It feels like such a solid computer for that money.

The 14” and 16” announcement made me thankful I bought the 13” Pro when it released. No unnecessary ports, Touch Bar, and a more svelte design. My only complaint is the thicker bezels.
Apparently there are several notch issues but there’s a fix which enables you to scale down your screen and increase the bezels on the top and both sides, basically turning it into the M1 13, lol

And even some used the base M1 Air with ‘just’ 7-core GPU and 8GB of RAM. The M1s were highly praised the last 12 months.
Still is, even for these YouTube Pros, the new 14/16 are over-kill. They’ve been editing their videos from an M1 Air and M1 MBP for the past year and have loved it. The 14 has an amazing screen but the notch is so out of place, there are issues with it and apparently the fix is to toggle on fake bezels on the top and both sides to turn it essentially into the M1 MBP, lollll. The 14 has backwardized design language, it’s very heavy, and bulbous and features ancient ports including HDMI last gen 2.0 which apparently 0.01% of Mac MBP users use on a regular basis. It also has a very loud fan, clearly evidenced on YouTube and others in this forum, it runs hot for no reason, and it has sub-par battery life. It is still portable but if you’re only able to use it for 6-8 hours then what good is it?

Regarding the 14’s heating issues, I connected it to my LG 34 inch 5K2K display and it definitely ran warmer than the M1 13. Not sure if others who have this display can attest.

The MBA is still a very solid choice! Just not the 13 M1 MBP.

If 120Hz refresh rate is a decision point for some I can see the inclination to upgrade or purchase, however consider that for majority it will make little to no difference in their day-to-day usage. It’s one of those nice to have but not a must unlike battery efficiency and fan noise and to an extent usable ports. Apple laptops have not had 120Hz refresh rate for over 20+ years and I don’t remember majority of users complaining about it. Is it worth the purchase or upgrade, maybe for some but definitely not for many considering the 2022 M2 MBA will not have it and does not seems like a “killer feature” by any standard.
I returned both the 14 and 16 yesterday and my eyes have re-adjusted to non ProMotion. It’s perfectly fine and I love seeing how sleek and thin my M1 MBP is :)

No chance I'd go back to the 13" M1 Pro. No chance. The 16" towers over it and simply crushes it. And I'd feel the same way about the 14". The design is better in every way on these new MBPs and the performance is spectacular.
That’s kind of an Apples to Oranges comparison. I would sure hope the newer larger CPU/GPU powered MacBook Pros would perform better. As far as design, I’m a personal fan of the smaller bezels on the new Pros but otherwise much prefer my Air design. No question the new computers are better in many ways. I think what some other users here are asking is why all of sudden is there a sentiment that the M1 computers are lacking in performance when they were highly praised for being well ahead of the competition in many ways. The new Pros just further that gap in a big way.

Think long and hard before getting rid of your Air or 13" M1 Pro

These computers are only 1 year old, I would think hard before getting rid of them.

If you do not like the design of the new MacBook pro’s get over it.

Apple’s designs are always known to deviate away from PC’s. It’s what makes them unique, so ‘notch up’.

There you go, this is what I may end up doing as my 16" MacBook Pro arrives Monday. I have an M1 MacBook Air so that's its competition.

If you go back to all the “Pro“ user reviews on YouTube, they praised the M1 Air and even admitted that they used it for their workflow. The M1 chip is incredible.

Who is saying that? I certainly haven‘t.

Whey not keep both!? ? If I were done with med school, I’d probably look at picking up the base 16” MBP or possibly a loaded iMac for home use and keep my MacBook Air as my travel computer.

So they did and I doubt many of them recommended that anyone trade in a M1 Air or MacBook to get a 2021, but at the same time I certainly don’t remember many of them saying buy an M1 Air or MacBook instead of a M1 Pro MacBook. I’m trading in a 2015 MacBook Pro and I waited until Apple produced a machine with features I wanted, which happens to be 14in MacBook Pro.

I fully intended to replace my 2018 15" MacBook Pro (i9) with the new 14", but I ended up buying an M1 MacBook Air instead a few days ago. It's so freaking good. I couldn't imagine needing the power of the 14" (even the base model) for my needs, and I do some fairly intense photo edits. The M1 is amazing, and the battery life is phenomenal. I am happy with my purchase!

Hard to have a large percentage use hdmi considering the fact that…you know Apple dropped it to pursue their flawed aspirations.

If you think HDMI 2.0 is “ancient” by all means live in your own bubble, but if you think Apple was going to go back on their stupid design decisions for the past 5 years to cater to a 0.01% there is a polishing cloth Apple wants to sell you.

As far as your other “points”. You can’t get around that kind of performance and not taking a significant hit on battery life. The thermal envelope was going to have to get bigger as well. Apple has already made dumb decisions with their designs and stuffing high performance parts only for them to throttle like crazy. What you are looking at with these machines are pure desktop replacements with enough breathing room. In fact, the battery life for the performance is quite remarkable all things considered.

You know what’s the best part of it all? The purchase isn’t required. In fact, Apple will likely keep selling the MacBook Air since it’s such a popular product line and a less “pro” MacBook Pro as well.

The M1 is an incredible achievement any way you look at it. We all saw AMD stomp Intel for years, but nobody was ready for this.

Even Linus Tech Tips which loves to nitpick on Apple products couldn’t say much negatives regarding the M1 mini. If Apple can keep this momentum the next Mac Pro should be absolutely incredible. We are probably looking at a much larger leap us olds saw from the G5 to Intel. It was unbelievable back then, it would be mind blowing considering you won’t even need dedicated graphics to get the horsepower hardcore video editors or developers require for rendering objects.

The only one that will probably hate the future Mac Pros...is our wallets ?

I wonder how many other people out there who own an Apple Silicon macbook also ordered two of them just to return them. Very considerate to those in the queue, why not just go to the Apple store like a normal person and demo them there? Bizarre.
