Oh so forceful with that exclamation point! Lol I couldn’t be further from being triggered unless I was in a coma. I just think its weird that you care why other people moved on from the 13” M1 model. You already know why they did it (performance, screen, speakers, design) but you are asking questions like its the exact same model as last years and your brain can’t wrap around why people purchased a newer model. You know that the newer models have ports again, MagSafe, a better screen, Promotion, better speakers, more RAM options, and better performance. You don’t need me to tell you these things.

You can use your 13”’model for the next 5 years for all i care. If you are happy with it, great! I think the newer models are better. That doesn’t mean your 13” model is bad, and I never said it was or that it was lacking in any way.
Yawn.

I wonder in the next generation MacBook Pros that Apple could have basically the same setups as the current ones with the exception of a M1 it would be a M2 along with a few minor changes? Car Manufactures do that all the time where the basic model doesn't have the features of the more expensive models. Just thinking out loud.

That’s not out of the question since they’ve done that successfully with iPhones from the beginning.

That being said, how much could I realistically get for my base M1? If it cost me $1299, I doubt I could get much more than $800-900.

How could a $1299 MBP fetch $1000 after almost a year?

why do people buy/drive BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lincoln, Tesla and Porsches? I really don't understand why people are spending so much money when you can get a Chevrolet Spark or Hyundai Accent which also takes you exact the same way from A to B?
Different strokes for different folks and because they can.

Your analogy has flaws, permit me to explain.

Apple is designing and selling their hardware and software, it’s a complete package and experience if you may.

In your vehicle comparison, there are many designers, manufacturers and sellers. It’s a package put together by many companies and the experience varies vastly. All vehicle have good years and bad, Apple is not immune to this but when Apple included an intel chip in its laptops the comparison maybe closer than present.

I believe what you should compare is why buy an BMW i7 when an i3 or i5 may suffice and this is considering that you are basing this off not hauling family or cargo most of the time. You are comparing one aspect of it which is speed.

An M1 will be able to handle majority of the tasks, it may take just a little extra time compared to the M1 Pro and Max but it will get it done with efficiency. Most users may never maximize the full potential of an M1 Pro and Max is one of those thought processes that oh I want the best money can buy for my work when in reality your work can be done on something lesser with a balance of utilizing the computers full capabilities. Now if you need the extra ports and use it frequently then I can see a requirement to upgrade or purchase considering if you have not purchased a dongle previously.

I would drive a Spark but the price difference many electric cars comes down to taste and ride enjoyability which has nothing to do with speed for me at least and more to do with efficiency and charge capacity/mileage. I am still an ICE owner as the math does not add up in my particular situation.

Same for this new MBP.
Why should you be a pro to use this MBP?

some people chose the new MacBook Pro just for the new ProMotion / 120Hz screen, cause there’s no other Mac right now with this screen.

But I totally got your point, by the way.

This whole panic that a top of the line machine purchased less than a year ago needs to be “dumped” is rather absurd.

I bought an M1 MBP with 3 cycles on the battery for $600 just because someone felt insecure and jumped to the new notchbooks Apple introduced.

Reviewers or those who NEED to grab one for their job are in a different category, but most of this is irrational consumerism. Oh No! Apple released a better laptop! Who would have thought?!

Why? I couldn't care less whether it's 60, 120 or 240.

I don't game. Is this a big deal for gamers?

I couldn’t tell the difference it makes comparing iPhone 13 & iPhone 13 pro. However, having 14” screen in basically the same size laptop, plus 2x retina resolution (no scaling), plus the brightness and contrast for HDR content, makes a big difference to me. Lastly, it doesn’t just ramp up to 120hz, it also drops down to 24hz to prolong battery life when viewing a movie, reading text, etc.

This thread is bait. As an M1 MBA owner it fits all my needs, why would I want the new MBP unless the extra horsepower is needed. It’s like owning a sports car and just driving it at city speed limits only to compensate by demonstrating to the world. Most people’s work will do fine with the MBA or 2020 MBP, these future proof people are just chasing an unrealized dream.

Prior to the MBA I had 8GB RAM and it was fine before that it was 4GB. I went 16GB this time around as I am not planning on upgrading for the next 5-10 years. Had I gone with the 32GB most of that power potential would go unrealized. I can afford it but I prefer to purchase what fits my needs not chasing some future goal.
Agreed. Last year with COVID and at-home school we got our 3 teenage daughters the M1 MBA so they would not have to use the horrific chromebooks the school issued them. These will be their college computers we just opted to buy them early because of COVID.

Anyway, I work in software development and compile code often during the day. Their new MacBook Airs could compile code faster than my 2018 16-inch Intel Core-i9 MacBook Pro. The only advantage to me on the new MacBook pros is compiling code faster and therefore being more productive. If somebody is not compiling code or rendering video or doing some performance intensive task that pauses their workday, then the MacBook Air is such an better option on price and portability.

I don’t disagree, but no touch bar, hdmi slot, magsafe!, promotion, xdr screen, beastly cpu/gpu/ne, much, much better battery life, no more spinning beach ball and ms teams no longer turning my MBP 2018 into a hovercraft?
I really had intended to use my ‘18 well into 2023, but even if it would have been just the keyboard that was upgraded, i might have folded. Oooh, the keyboard on my 14”… it’s improving my (touch type) WPM seriously!
I love this machine.

If 120Hz refresh rate is a decision point for some I can see the inclination to upgrade or purchase, however consider that for majority it will make little to no difference in their day-to-day usage. It’s one of those nice to have but not a must unlike battery efficiency and fan noise and to an extent usable ports. Apple laptops have not had 120Hz refresh rate for over 20+ years and I don’t remember majority of users complaining about it. Is it worth the purchase or upgrade, maybe for some but definitely not for many considering the 2022 M2 MBA will not have it and does not seems like a “killer feature” by any standard.
