Beautifully put. Most of us love any type of discount but for an item this expensive, it isn't worth possibly cutting yourself off at the knees. Good luck & whatever you decide, I hope it all works out for you.

I think you guys are right it's Target nebulous return policy that is giving me pause. I'm going to take it back to Target and purchase one at an Apple store.

----------

one the retina mini is released, they'll be long lines of people returning their iPad Air. So do it soon.

Not interested in the Mini. Since it's going to scale everything down to a smaller size I don't it would comfortable on my eyes.

I had a 16 GB iPad 4 which I really liked but I ran out of storage space so I sold it for a negligible loss a couple months ago in preparation for the iPad 5 'Air' release. Yesterday I purchased a 32 GB iPad Air at Target and it's still sitting unopened in it's box. I bought it at Target because had a 5% off coupon however their written return policy is a little ambiguous regarding opened items.

So here's is issue. I've read way too many thread post and it's making me second guess my purchase. Is 1 GB of ram really enough? Is my screen going to be off colored IE yellowish, bluish, pinkish or any colorish. Will there be light leakage. Is it going to have shadow bars on the screen. Is the iPad Mini Retina going to be 10x better. Are there going to be better deals coming up soon nearer to Christmas.

Please talk some sense into me.

These screen obsessive posts come up everytime a new IOS device comes out.

I'm amazed somebody would leave of these unopened and not try and enjoy it.

our promise to you
We promise to attempt a return on every item purchased in our stores or on Target.com by scanning your receipt or packing slip, offering receipt look-up* or a non-receipted return or exchange with a valid form of identification. Most items can be returned in your Target store as noted on the packing slip in the Return Method column. Just bring in the packing slip and the item. If you prefer or need to mail in your return, go to www.target.com/returns to follow the easy return process and print the prepaid Target.com return label.
refund/exchange policy
Most unopened items in new condition returned within 90 days will receive a refund or exchange. Some items have a modified return policy that is less than 90 days. Those items will show a “return by” date under the item on your receipt or packing slip and in the "Item details, shipping" tab if purchased on Target.com. Items that are opened or damaged or do not have a packing slip or receipt may be denied a refund or exchange. All bundled items must be returned with all components for a refund.
Exceptions
Returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited, other restrictions may apply.
Open music, movies, video games and software cannot be returned, but may be exchanged for the same title, for the same or different gaming platform.
Open or defective collectibles (e.g., sports cards, special-edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures and die-cast cars) cannot be returned.
The following items must be returned within 30 days: Computers, netbooks, laptops, eReaders, tablets, cameras, camcorders, digital audio players, GPS systems, video game hardware, personal DVD players, and no-contract cell phones. For these items purchased between 11/1 – 12/25, the 30 day refund period will start on 12/26.

It would seem they're not interested in returns of DVDs, video games, and all the other things that most retailers won't accept for return, but will exchange.
Now crack it open, and enjoy both peace of mind, and a nice tablet. ;)

You can return it, no questions asked regardless if its opened or not..

I recently returned my son's xbox 360 within 30 days (opened). All they do is check the serial # to prevent someone pulling off a switch-a-roo....

Not sure how you can say screen defects aren't an issue. There is more chatter here about screen issues in 24 hours than there was for the ipad 4 and Mini combined.

With the ipad 3, most people had no screen complaints. That doesn't mean they didn't have screens with discoloration. The discolored screens are pretty subtle and not everyone's eyes can catch it. There were also probably plenty of problem free screens. I saw one or two out of about 50.

If someone is expressing concerns that they might get a screen with a discoloration issue, to tell them there are no issues is misleading. It's too early to say how widespread the problems are, or whether the OP would get, or even notice, a discolored screen, but to say they don't exist is just plain wrong.

To the OP, lesson learned; a 5% deal on a product you intend to be picky about, but comes with limited return privileges, is not a deal at all. Return the ipad unopened, then get thyself to an Apple store and pay full price. If there's a problem, you will be glad you did.
the iPad mini screen defect wasn't a defect it was part of the design and there was a ton of chatter here about it...and far more than what is going on now. More importantly you can just exchange it if there is a defect.

Next time, don't read forum posts until after you open and use your new device. Obviously most people starting threads here have issues with their iPad. Mine is perfect, so I didn't feel the need to start a thread over it.

Some people >_> will even get mad when you say your iPad has no defects. So problems a small percentage of people are having are posted everywhere which makes it seem like most people are having those issues as well.

I have an iPad Air with a beautiful screen. I'm thinking of returning it because, having read all these threads about troublesome displays, my Air might have a bad display even though I don't notice a thing wrong with it. I'm not taking any chances.

I hope you're joking.

It's the unopened part that worries me.
They've given you the list of opened items that can't be returned, or can only be exchanged. The quickest way to save $30 plus time and gas, is to call the Target store and ask. Get the person's name, and then crack that sucker open. :D;) I bought my first Apple product less than a year ago, and it was on sale. There is an Apple Store next to my wife's office, but they were charging full price, plus Philadelphia sales tax(!!!). I called the Apple Store, and they were quite emphatic about bringing any problems straight to them, regardless of where it was purchased.

I preordered an iPad 1 back in the day to get it on launch day. Build quality was excellent. Starting with the 2nd gen, and issues that some had, I learned to wait 3-4 months after release for Apple to work out the kinks. That approach has served me well and have received flawless iPads since.

Regarding the iPad Air. In my opinion, 1GB is sufficient for now but will reach performance capacity sooner than the iPad 4 running 6.1.3. Your choice regarding a full-sized iPad is the Air with iOS 7.0.3. If I was forced to run 7.x, I'd pick the Air. (so I wouldn't suggest trying to re-buy an iPad 4)

Whether you keep the Air you have or return it to see what shakes out, really depends upon if you are committed to the larger form factor.

I read the same things here, but nonetheless bought the Air today, which is my first iPad. :) I hadn't seen it as the store, ee in the UK, they had none on display. Instantly, on opening it, I was impressed, more so than I had been expecting. None of the mentioned defects are there fortunately.

RAM issues for me, may become apparent at some point, but the iOS is designed differently than OSX, to run better with less. For most people I doubt it will be an issue for quite a while yet. Waiting another year...glad I haven't.

The OP has a right to be concerned. The iPad Air needs much more than 1GB, it runs pretty slow on iOS7. Poor scrolling in Safari and slow launching of apps. Yes, Light Leakage is pretty poor on it and the screen has a terrible yellow hue in many sections. Couple that, it gets very hot and hard to hold because of that. Apple blew it with this one. :(

Got a new iPad this morning from Apple store. It's pretty close to flawless. Screen looks great, no issues. None.

Really nice tablet, I'll use it for many years to come.

I'll also say, I was waiting for the retina mini. But I read some posts here, and they made sense concerning bigger text, easier tapping and scrolling, and only slightly larger than the mini retina. I considered these points, then I opted for the larger iPad. Glad I got one, it was the right call.

I don't get why there is such a big focus on return policies. If your hardware is defective, take it to Apple and they'll swap it out. The only time I'd worry about a return policy is if my phone or iPad came with a big ol gash out of the box.

Now if there is no Apple store near these people worried about return policies, then I understand their problem.

Did you buy one that exhibited all of these problems, or did you just read about it? I'm not trying to be nasty, so be nice. :D In the event that you do have one that's messed up, take it back. Mine is 100%, and I'm crazy picky when it comes to this stuff. You should see me buying car.... Flashlights and magnifying lenses aren't things you see at new car dealerships everyday. :D

Oh Lord. Open the dang thing and just have fun. Life is too short.

Yes, yes, yes. I opened the box, my device a once over and started using it. So far it's great. But I'm not one to go looking for things and I know forums like this will be biased with those who have problems/complaints so not really an accurate representation of the general buying public.

It's very disappointing when paying a good buck for an inferior product!

I have an iPad air and there's nothing inferior about it.

Why do I get the feeling you don't actually own an iPad Air?

Yep, take it back buy from Apple and get no questions asked return policy.
Only way to reduce the risk.

You may want to check on that, its not no questions asked return policy if it is beyond 15 days time frame. Also they are charging restocking fees for certain items so beware of it.

I just bought one. Hours ago. I can say, without reservation or qualification, what you say is false.
