Another question please:

I anticipate purchasing the ip4, and sticking w/Apple products for now.
Still trying to figure out which data, voice, message plans to use/buy though.
Yea ~ I'm inexperienced.
Will probably just have to guess at it and hope for the best.

Anyway, if I don't like the ip4, maybe dropped calls or --whatever, and I cancel my contract and pay the early termination fee ..., what can I do with the phone ..., besides what you're not allowed to say in this forum :D

Is there a way to purge/scour all my info out of the phone, so I could sell it at a discount to someone who wanted an ip4?

Thanks.

Also, there's tons of members posting about the quality (or not) of their iphone receptions ~ but few say where abouts they're located.
Don't have say exactly .., but a general idea would be helpful.

Without an idea of the poster's location ..., how can one tell which areas of the country ATT may or may not provide better reception in?
Certainly this could influence a purchase or .., not.

It all depends on how much you use. For data, if you're a light user, choose the 200MB option. If you use lots of data, go for the 2GB deal. Use AT&T's Data Calculator for assistance. I can't help you decide messaging or voice - that is all based on your own needs. When you want to sell the phone someday, you can erase all data off the phone and sell it on Craigslist, eBay, etc. For the rest, I suggest taking a trip to your local Apple or AT&T store. :)

Just FYI I consider myself a heavy data user myself. I use pandora constantly, stream netflix in the gym daily, and am almost always pulling out my phone to check a website or watch a youtube vid. Interestingly enough though I have had my i4 since July and have only used 2GB of 3G data TOTAL. Everywhere I go from home, work, gym, hotel, and hospital has wifi!

What data plan do you have then? Or do you have unlimited?

I have the 2GB plan, which will be more than enough for me if I have unexpected travel arrangements or basically get stuck somewhere without wifi. I was worried when ATT dropped the unlimited option, but soon I realized I don't ever come close to the 2GB limit

I'm glad there's free Wi-Fi just about everywhere. I curse the places that don't offer it, though. :D

Not using Nav I can understand since you'll only need it if lost and/or hooked into your vehicle's power source.

But not using 4G and keeping your screen at 25% on an EVO as a means of claiming that the battery life is OK is a moronic statement. Those are the whole reason for even HAVING an EVO.

The screen at 25% isn't a big deal at all, the screen is still more than bright enough for me to easily see under all conditions.

And I don't think 4G would be as much of a battery draw if there was good 4G coverage where I spend most of my time. It's only when 4G is searching for a signal that it seems to really suck down battery. Again it's not a big deal to just disable 4G because it has no impact on my ability to use the phone and if I cant reliably get a 4G signal there is no advantage to enabling it. The EVO is still a great phone on 3G.

I always recommend getting an extended battery. Even ones that fit in the same space can often give several extra hours.

As for calling those conservation measures above "moronic", let's see what Apple themselves say to do with the iPhone to save battery:

  • Minimize use of location services.
  • Turn off push notifications.
  • Fetch new data less frequently.
  • Turn off push mail.
  • Auto-check fewer email accounts.
  • Minimize use of third-party applications (especially games).
  • Turn off Wi-Fi.
  • Turn off Bluetooth.
  • Use Airplane Mode in low- or no-coverage areas.
  • Adjust brightness: Dim the screen.
  • Turn off EQ.
  • Turn off 3G.

Still moronic....if the only way to actually USE your phone (we aren't talking a laptop or desktop here...but a PORTABLE device meant to be used throughout the business day) is to basically disable all the features that make it useful, including dimming the screen, then I'm not sure who is the bigger moron. The manufacturer for coming up with such a pantywaist of a battery to power their uber-device, or we consumers for actually FOLLOWING such moronic advice.

The iPhone 4 isn't great on battery life in my opinion. I typically have Bluetooth and 3G enabled at all times. I may switch on WiFi at several points throughout the day (but its not constantly on) and I'll talk on it for up to 3 hours each day. Doing that gets me roughly 12 hours of use between charges. Sufficient for a normal business day but just barely so.

One of my employees has the HTC EVO. Using it side by side one day (shortly after he got it), he got about 4 hours of use, 2 of that was phone talk time (we were on the same conference call). With an extended battery, he says he's up to 6 hours now between charges.

To the OP I originally replied, I didn't realize you were shifting from 4G to "plain" 3G. You just said you turned off 4G so I assumed (incorrectly) you were dropping ALL data access for the device which I would find totally unacceptable (and said as much). Sorry about misunderstanding that.

Regardless, I'm about done with all the gee-wizardry of new software and hardware features on these phones. I would be perfectly happy if the ONLY thing that the iPhone 4x/5, HTC EVO2, et al would offer is 2X or greater battery improvement thanks to some new battery/chipset efficiency technology advancement. To me, sustainable battery life is the missing "killer feature."

I don't get why you keep insisting that dimming the screen impacts my ability to use it. I have had it fixed at 25% for the last few months and use it daily and never have any issues reading the display because of it. Honestly at 100% it is way to bright, and hard on the eyes.

I easily can go 24-48 hours between charges depending on use. Even on days where I am sitting at a job site with downtime and using my phone heavily I still can make it through the rest of the day without trouble. Typically when I charge my phone it is at about 60-50% capacity when I stick it on the charger. And the point of locking my brightness at 25% is so I don't have to worry about managing power during the day. I don't switch wifi off, I don't switch bluetooth off, I don't use a task manager, I just leave 4G off and go about my day.

When I had the EVO I had it around 25% as well. But don't try to see it outside, it was useless during that time. But to me sounds like you didn't use your phone much as I could barely make it through the day with those items turned off.

Not to add to the side war going on here, but I think this thread has helped convert another guy from EVO to iPhone. Now it is a matter of one of two things in the near term. One, Verizon announces the iPhone and is available before 2/14, or I win the Mega Millions tonight.... Guessing the first has a better chance.

3 Reasons:

1) Battery life without having to kill features
2) Accessories - you can't go to a retail store and not see iPhone stuff, try to find EVO gear anywhere other than BB and you can't.
3) Overall experience and ease of integration with other devices (iPad/TV/iTunes)

2) Accessories - you can't go to a retail store and not see iPhone stuff, try to find EVO gear anywhere other than BB and you can't.

Ah. Expand your horizons past BB :)

I've bought tons of phone accessories from Hong Kong on eBay, including EVO gear for my son-in-law.

I'm talking deals like $4 for a case, including postage. (Most things show up in the USA in a week, amazingly.) Plus docks, chargers, you name it.

I can only speak for the Evo 4G, to go as far as to say that one of my best friends has one, and he manages to knock a day of use out of it every day. This dude uses his phone a lot, and has it overclocked by a fair bit, and does actually use the 4G radio on it.

I have a new G2, it actually gets better battery life with Wi-Fi on than it does with Wi-Fi off. Unless I spend a lot of time playing games, when I go to bed there will still be somewhere from 20-50% of battery left. If I don't use it at all, more like 95%! If I play too much Angry birds, then maybe 10% lol :D

I ditched my EVO for an Epic after about 6 months of use but I kid you not, I'd go with an iPhone again if it ever hit Sprint.

The next iPhone really needs a 4.0" screen though. I can't go back to 3.5 after using the EVO and the Epic and I damn sure can't go back to AT&T.

But screen size side, the iPhone was the perfect phone for me. I miss it for some reason.

Hello, this is my first post here. Would like honest opinions on this question. I am no fanboy by any means. I am sort of a phone whore. The last 3 years have owned couple Blackberries...iPhone3G...Nexus-One...and now EVO 4G...

I do like my EVO 4G a lot. Just the battery life sucks balls no matter what rooting and setcpu offered me on this. I use my phone, god forbid as an actual phone, too. I email clients few dozen times a day. And Google maps everyday for directions to new jobs. And the EVO dies in half a day of heavy use. Even the car charger can't keep it up, still goes down faster than it will charge. I just think this EVO is a power hungry device, that can't handle all workday use.

How people can have a phone and not use it most of the day, I don't understand ? I run my own business which is heavily sales involved so being connected all day is a must.

I will see what the Nexus-S reviews like for battery life, the Galaxy-S screens are amazing. Might go that route and T-Mobile has great monthly packages. Or go the iPhone 4 route, hearing it is one of the best batteries for a smart phone. Maybe go on ATT with it, or unlock it and run it on T-Mobile.

The Nexus S' battery isn't all that good, the iPhone 4 lasts a lot longer from my personal use.

You can't be serious about the Galaxy S' screen, have you been to an Apple store lately? Go to one and see the iPhone 4's screen for yourself.

My suggestion, is to buy an iPhone 4, stick with AT&T, and enjoy it.
It's a great phone :)

I agree, the iPhone 4 has the best looking screen by far. Not even close but the SAMOLED is still really good. There's a huge difference between the EVO and Epic's screen quality and the Epic wins that comparison hands down. But even so, the iPhone gets the nod overall. They just need to make it bigger, then it will be unstoppable lol.

Today had a busy phone day, lots of calls and texts, by 2:00 the EVO was at 25%, and dying fast.

Holding out for the Verizon i4, if there is a 4.3 jailbreak soon after, if not might go to ATT.

Looks like you're in luck. ;)

With the VZ iPhone launching on February 10th (pre-orders on the 3rd)...

Please read that aloud, and see if you find your mistake :)

If not, here is some aid :

Except - not to be confused with Accept

Or more importantly, not confused with :

Expect

Spelling is great; the right word is better - unfortunately you where using one of those words that when mispelled, can be come a different word with a completely different meaning.

spelling is great? It's "competition" not "compition".
