Thinking of ditching EVO 4G for iPhone4 ?

I felt the need to share my post from another thread that similar discussions were also taking place in.....

Here's what I have determined. As a nerd it's easy to look at all the features and specs that these Android phones are putting out and say "wow I want that, with all those specs and features it's gotta be better than the boring old iPhone!" but the truth is, it's not. The phones are better on paper but when it comes down to actually using the phone everyday it just doesn't work as well or feel as good to use like iPhone does. Apple has designed it as a pleasure to use on purpose. Android on the other hand is designed to pack in as many features as possible. That sums up this whole Android vs iPhone war in my opinion and I will be returning to iPhone at some point as soon as I can.

sorry but you are basing your opinion of android as a whole from one android device.

as a casual techie, I find myself entrenched in the android world.

I love the fact that I don't have to wait for an entire OS update for a small fix. android updates its native applications at an individual level. this gives much more updates.

I have the EVO and an iphone 4 and I have to honest, the EVo is a great device; is just the battery that sucks!
I only get about 5 hours of heavy isage and i get over 12 hours on my iphone 4 with the same amount of usage minus 4G.
as soon as you turn on the 4G, you can just see the battery going down faster than heck!

:):)

I don't agree with your determination. Especially since I have been using Froyo and flashing other things on it.

You are very correct even with the other poster saying you aren't. I have owned many Android phones, and I also support many Android, iphone, Palm, Windows OS phones at work. The ones we least have issues with are the iphones. The ones the most, Windows Mobile, with Android 2nd. Android phones have issues that many here do not experience or see in the business world. Mine would just stop syncing all the time and it would require a reboot of the phone to get it working again. Had several Android phones do that.

In real life, the iphone just works and it works good. While the Androids do work, they work with a bunch of issues.

A hacked Android phone doesn't equal a good comparison here. OEM to OEM the iphone wins. I have used Froyo and many other versions of the Android. Sorry again they don't compare in refinement to the iphone.

Agree, I've been there done that tons of times, always going for what seems to be the best and/or latest on paper. No more for me, the iPhone has me sold. Sure iOS doesn't have that new car smell anymore, but the phrase that everyone keeps using ... "it just works" is completely true. Not to mention most apps and games made for the iOS are of better quality.

True in a way, but most people don't have the money, patience, or knowledge to keep trying differ devices. Unfair to Android, and the reason iOS isn't on a ton of devices.

You are right. I am basing this off of only the EVO. I have used many other Android devices casually. But in my defense, EVO usually has the latest and greatest of Android so I think it is a good indication of what android is like. And I have put everything from stock to custom roms on.

Yea I have used lots of froyo roms. Doesn't change the fact that Android Android still the underlying software. Small things like pinch to zoom, scrolling, and app quality all add up to a overall better user experience in my opinion and that is what I'm saying counts in throng run. The amazing specs and hardware get old fast. Not that say that iphone isn't stale because it is. I will jailbreak to fix that though.

OEM to OEM the iphone lacks things that android doesn't. There are bugs in both phones eventhough Apple has a two year start on Android, they still have bugs,...like making a simple phone call to crappy notifications...even after that head start. Android isn't perfect but they are catching up and doing it very quickly.
You have your opinion but I had to hack my iphone to be happy with it. I like iphones but they still have their shortcomings while the competition is about to pass them up.

Of course it lacks a few things that Android has. But to use as a phone and use as a multimedia device the iphone works flawless while the Android doesn't. You have to HACK the Android based phones to make it have better battery life.

They have way longer than two year start on Android. More like 4 years in July. Again if it wasn't for Apple, Android would not exist today. They learned from them, came out with a software that is more OPEN SOURCE and are proving it daily. Apple will upgrade their software soon as they don't want to lose that steam with the competition getting harder. My phone calls work great. Notifications work and work all the time without worry. While Android sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

That isnt neccessarily true. My Vibrant out of the box gets better battery life than the EVO because the EVO is a poor design with seperate antenea installed in it. I got a new battery for it(yes, we can change them ourselves) free from t-Mobile and that battery was better than the one that came with the phone.
I know the iP4 (which i dont have) has pretty good life compared to my Vibrant but again, they have a big head start. My iPhone didnt have great battery life and everytime you update the firmware, it got worse.
That will be different when dual core phones come out.
And my phone is rooted and i have flashed a few different modems and my battery life isnt any better. It is faster with those modems but batery life hasnt improved nor has it got worse. Some guys claim theirs is, but i wasnt so lucky. It isnt horrible like the Evo but it isnt great either.

Those who bought the Nexus S are saying the battery life on those is very good and those run Gingerbread so maybe it is getting better faster than Apple's did.

OK, even better for Android and where they are going. However, that statement is false. The iP3G was out(May 2008) when G1 came out(Sept 2008). That would be 2 years.

Really? If it werent for cell phones period, and a smartphone like Blackberry, iPhones wouldnt exist either so what does that have to do with anything?

And what makes you think Google learned anything from Apple? Linux isnt new. Its been around for years...as in before Apple even started making iMacs.

I agree some Android phones dont work great all the time but the early firmwares dont and i didnt like the G1 when it came out either. But, Eclair 2.1 is pretty stable, Froyo 2.2 is better and faster and Gingerbread 2.3 is even better and faster still and they are getting faster and getting additions all the time. Honeycomb is coming out in Tablets and will also be xcoming in Phones this year.
So i believe you when you say you have had trouble with Android phones, i do, but going into their 3rd year, Android is starting to kick some tail while Steve holds iPhone back with a major change once a year. Hec it took him 2 years to give you MMS and cut and paste.

Being able to Root the device is even better and it allows for a lot of other things that even Jailbreaking still wont do some 4 years later. The Devs for Android do a great job of developing things to add to these phones such as different Modems, several different custom OS ROM's, Kernals and more. And you dont have to worry about them not being compatible with iTunes to be able to get anything on the phone or get Apps because they arent tied a programlike that.
You dont NEED to do this to make your phone run well now, but it isnt hard to do and doesnt take long to do.

Bottom line is going forward, both these phones will still have some bugs as they all dont work the same....and i mean even the iPhones. There is ONE phone per year and there are problems with them just the same while some have no problems with theirs. Android puts out many models and the biggest beef is battery life. That is still my biggest beef. Looking forward to dual core to change that.

I also look forward to what Apple does with theirs going forward but it is just my feeling that they are going to get passed up by the others.

The iphone came out in July of 2007. That was the 2G iphone. That was almost 4 years ago. You may want to actually look at the history before posting wrong info.

Also, BB has nothing on what the iphone has. It didn't even have a Graphic interface back then. The iphone again changed all that. No phone was like it and everyone copied it after it came out.

That is correct and the Google phone HTC G1 with T-Mobile which was the first Android phone came out Sept 2008.

That dont equal a 4 year head start with my math.

Speaking of knowing your history before spewing are you just making stuff up as you go along or what?

The RIM/BB has had a GUI interface on all their phones since 1999, WAY before the iPhone was released 7 years later. It wasn't pretty but at least you got icons to help you quickly differentiate between applications.

They added a color screen to their GUI with the introduction of the 7xxx line of devices in 2005. The trackball built into the BB's from then on out were placed there specifically to enable fast manipulation of the GUI.

REally? They had one that allowed you to touch the screen on the icons? Well in that case, Windows Mobile was graphical. lol.

You don't understand what GUI stands for? Really? You think that the iPhone's "GUI" is the first that was ever invented and Apple just cooked it up totally for the iPhone?

Wow. Sorry, thought we were having a grown up discussion here.

The battery life on the iPhone 4 should see you through the day, it's much more improved than the 3GS and 3G, which frankly wasnt great.

Correct....which those were smartphones and what i was talking about. iPhone may have been the first touchscreen but without the smartphone, maybe Apple isnt even in the phone Biz as that guy was trying to say about Android wouldnt be if it werent for Apple.

Could you please enlighten me? What's so magical about dual core phones regarding to battery life? Is it because of the smaller chip architecture? The EVO could've used dual core (hypothetically) and that wouldn't mean better battery life out-of-the-box (you could put lipstick on a pig...).

If the software is still crappy OTB, we get back to the start. W

Which BTW, no phone must need HACKING to get better battery life, perhaps for some tweaks, but not for that.

What I really think is that because Apple focuses on ONE device, they can optimize it. Perhaps the EVO just needed better antenna design.

Just my 2c.

Well, not trying to throw stones but you clearly dont have any idea about any of this stuff.

First Dual Core is maybe easier explained if you just look at this

As for flashing different modems. There is that option. It takes about 30 seconds to root your phone and about a minute to a minute and a half to flash a different modem file and some do work better than others which means you get speed with some and not so good battery life and some you get good speed and better battery life.
You dont HAVE to do it, but we can so why not try it?

Here is a speed test i did with a recent modem i flashed on wifi and it isnt the fastest one ive had. Ive had speeds in the 15+ MB range and over 3MB in upload. A couple times my upload speed was over 10 MB. The modem im using now is good but it isnt quite as good on battery life and the one in the shot below. The shot on the bottom are some other speed tests.
