Friggin' hilarious. Nice to remember that TS was hyping a widescreen 6G for the longest time before they started saying "Apple won't do it."

To be fair,

Apple did release a 3.5" Touch iPod in the iPhone. I admit TS's recent record has been spotty, but I'm not sure you can discount ThinkSecret's touch screen iPod rumors entirely as they preceded the iPhone's announcement and may have been related.

I've been holding out for a groundbreaking 6th Gen, this sounds just like an minor visual change to the current 5th Gen, iPods that are TWO YEARS OLD already! I pray that ThinkSecret is wrong, but I certainly won't be paying for this crap! I'll hold onto my 4th gen until an iPod worth buying comes out!

Yes, remember, this is the iPod with video. Seems like you're waiting for the WS Video iPod....

True, but that would also mean that I need to give credence to these new non-touch iPod rumors, and that would make me unhappy, so I won't.

La la la la la.

I don't see this helping Apple's situation out much. The market for mp3 players has become inundated with pretty high-quality devices. The first iPod was unique in that regard -- it was much smaller, much easier to navigate, and overall much better looking than the Creative Zen or whatever was out at that time. Other companies tried catching up, like Dell, and failed.

Nowadays with players like the Meizu (4gb, video, looks great!) around $100, Apple is going to have to cut their prices or innovate to compete. The Nano is still safe, but imo the iPod Video *needs* a touchscreen, fullscreen, or something to make it stand apart from its competitors. That leaked mockup UI wasn't that spectacular to me.

And BTW, a fullscreen, touchscreen iPod doesn't need to compete with the iPhone. The iPhone has WiFi, internet communications, organizer, etc., and is a phone. A fullscreen, touchscreen iPod can just be a video player.

I would much prefer they keep the inch and add stereo BT headphones option, bigger screen, and better capacity/battery life.

If this change is true then there are going to be a lot of ipod accessories/speakers being devalued.

yea i am not going to trust them at all

..and there had better be a white version.

Anyone else want to believe that the 6th gen iPods will come with the new iPhone earbuds that have play/pause controls? I'd certainly love it. The more I think about it, I believe my favorite iPod was the 3rd gen. Sure it scratched easily, but the backlit touch buttons were awesome and it had a nice blue screen. Not to mention it came with the earbuds, earbud covers, the dock, dock port covers, a dock, a charger, firewire (anyone else remember this gem?), a belt clip case, a pouch, AND a remote. I miss firewire. It was fast, could be daisy-chained and would charge all the time.

Yes! My 3G iPod was awesome, and it was definitely the most bang for your buck. Once Apple upgraded their iPod Photo line and rebranded them as just "iPod", I upgraded to a 40gig iPod Photo. It was the last time anything close to this much stuff was included in the package. Certainly they figured out they could make a lot more money if they packaged everything separately.

it better be eligible for the back to school promo!!!

They're saving the touch-screen interface for the iPhone, trust me, it's a good marketing move.

I hope that the Blackberry like proportions are wrong. It looks like a poor choice for playing back widescreen video and there is all that wasted space either side of the click wheel. Furthermore, there is just something very unaesthetic about those proportions.

I agree - and apart from the aesthetics its width looks like it would be more difficult to hold and use the click-wheel one-handed.

I think Apple is going to have to do something fresh with the iPod to keep their marketshare. They aren't going to come out with something half baked!

It's said to be the same width as the current iPod, just shorter.

I cant imagine the ipod proportions becoming more square. If it got much wider, it would really use is pocketability and become more difficult to hold in the hand. I hate to say it, but I would expect an ipod with rather zune-like proportions. widescreen with a circular control surface. Expect an accelerometer in the unit to auto-rotate the screen. It will not be all touchscreenl; not a real need, adds cost, and adds size. (Look at the iphone, not that much of its internals is "phone." If the 6gen ipod was full-touchscreen ike the phone, using similar components, where would the harddrive go?)

The ipod, because its vast storage, will still be the choice for many. The nano is what will be absorbed into the iphones (there will still be nanos, but their imporantance will probably diminish)

But, Apple (Steve) said that the iPhone is the best iPod they've ever made… now how can they make anything worse then that (thinking of the music/iPod part of the iPhone and not the phone + internet stuff) when they update the iPod? Are they gonna be like: "Uh, yea, we updated the iPod, but if you want a real iPod you'd have to buy the iPhone… except… you can only fit "some" of your music on that one… eh… yea… so… buy our "new"/old iPod, that's not as good as the iPhone, but with larger HD…"

I still use my 3g iPod. I want to upgrade, but I just don't see why I need to get one of the 5g iPods. I replaced my 3g battery a few months back, and I think the hard drive is about to die. If Apple's 6g doesn't do touch screen, then I think I'll buy a hard drive for my current iPod.

Here's my prediction... the iPhone's large LCD will make it into the next iPod. Roughly same size as the iPhone but there will also be a clickwheel at the bottom.

How can they do that? Actually pretty easy. If you measure the top, black part, there's about 3/4 of an inch for the earpiece that could be wacked since it's not needed. Move that to the bottom and you have 1.5" of room for the clickwheel.

As for software, I'd some form of CoverFlow will make it since it's all the rage lately (and it ends up being pretty useful).

Not gonna happen.

Minor cosmetic changes to the housing doesn't make any sense and will only be seen as a cheap "upgrade".

Apple will piss off all the third party manufacturers for little to no reason making their products obsolete.
This has never been Apples practice and I see no reason they will change.

aesthetically the new rumored designs look stumpy (without a better word ;) )

After the release of the iPhone, only a full screen (wide) video version will suffice.

If they are going to upgrade the regular "music" version it will all be under the hood.

I think you are spot on. With so much revenue and profit coming from the IPod line (like 10,000,00 units last quarter) a release that freezes out upgrades could impact profit substantively.

No crap there won't be a touchscreen iPod. (assuming the iPods get updated for x-mas) You'd have to be an idiot to think that Apple would either
a) release a better spece'd $250 device that competes directly with their $500 device, or b) raise the price of iPod so high it gets priced out of the market.

what about those who simply don't want phone service? i'm very happy with verizon and i'm not going to leave them for AT&T - not now, not ever

two separate products. i'd buy a widescreen ipod with multitouch. i won't buy an iphone unless it comes to verizon (which it won't ever). i won't buy the blackberry-esque alleged 6G ipod.

there are millions of people who are satisfied with their current phones and just want a new ipod. there is a lot of concern about a new ipod cannibalizing iphone sales. i think there are two separate markets. it is a shame if they release this piece of crap shown on 9to5mac and thinksecret.
