two separate products. i'd buy a widescreen ipod with multitouch. i won't buy an iphone unless it comes to verizon (which it won't ever). i won't buy the blackberry-esque alleged 6G ipod.

there are millions of people who are satisfied with their current phones and just want a new ipod. there is a lot of concern about a new ipod cannibalizing iphone sales. i think there are two separate markets. it is a shame if they release this piece of crap shown on 9to5mac and thinksecret.

Yes! Why do so many assume that they are the same product aimed at the same market. I have a BB with T-Mobile and am very happy and won't got to AT&T and my company pays for everything. Why would I ever buy an IPhone? I won't. However, I will buy 2 widescreen Ipods should they come out - one for me, one for the kids.

Apple won't be 'cannabalizing' an IPhone sale with me and others like me they will be gaining NET NEW IPod sales.
 
I have had the same ipod for over 3 years now...I have been waiting for a new one ever since the video ipod was released...2 years. 2 years there has been speculation of a full screen touch screen ipod...I waited, thinking it was just around the corner...just a while ago, the iphone was announced, and my hopes of a new ipod with full screen capabilities came back...Maybe the wait would be over. Now this. 3 years and they give me this? All my hopes and dreams shattered...Right now I don't even have an ipod as my old one died in the wait for the new, which will never come...I'm tired of waiting *sigh*
well, I wonder what apple is thinking after all this negative replies...on every site, all I see is disapointment. Maybe this is why they expect a lower revenue? haha.
All I can say is that I'm disapointed
 
all they are doing is backing up previous rumors. rumors that were heard from a guy that heard from another guy that a guy said...

there is just no way apple would make that crap

i rather buy a replacement HD for my ipod photo then buy that.

i dont think that is going to happen. Apple uses the back to school student savings to clear out the older models to make room for the New Shinny Stuff. So as soon as the promotion ends, they release all new stuff so all the college kids can complain about not having the most current and "best" product.

As for the new ipod, i love the way my 5.0 is now. Its great and i still have boat loads of room left for more...whatever i want. I dont like the idea of a short fat one. Now if they where to make it wide screen, the current size would be perfect. maybe a little shorter width wise so the WS ratio is right and a little thicker to compensate for the battery, but perfect. But that would require a touch screen to control the thing. I really dont see where Apple is trying to get with this update to the ipod. I think they are just making it more spiffy with a new(er) OS to make it more open to the public.

But my ears are always open to listen to what SJ has to say. Ever since the G4 Tower past, he has been making some good decisions about everything. I do see new Casing though. They need to have something new to attract attention for the holidays.
 
As it has been mentioned in various places already, the really interesting question is whether the widescreen iPod (or rather the OS X based iPod that Steve Jobs has semi-announced already) will be simply the iPhone without EDGE, phone and SMS plus a bigger storage OR rather the iPhone without all wireless communication (ie, without Safari, Mail, Google Maps, etc.).

I think this was/is also a very tough question for Apple to decide.

they will.. seems obvious that the 6th generation ipod will NOT have touchscreen , probably the next model. And ill stick with my ipod 5.5G and my iphone.. no need for a new ipod with "nothing" new... i dont care about new interface or world clock and those craps.. ipod = music and video.
they need a decent screen to watch videos , i dont care if its touchscreen or clickwheel , keeping the same screen size is just dumb in my opinion.. or maybe they want people who really want a bigger screen and watch videos buy the iphone of course. would be too risk to launch a 250U$ device that have touchscreen and the same screen as the iphone... a lot of people who might by an iphone just to use ipod etc.. would not buy anymore.

120GB PLEEEEEZE!!!! It's all for the music for me and I couldn't give a crap about WIFI WIDESCREEN or anything else. Just want to have more music with me.:cool:

I don't like the 5G for that very reason.

There's already too much white space around the click wheel. The nano looks much more balanced.
 
I've somewhat stopped trusting ThinkSecret as they will post any bogus rumor that gets sent in. Also, if this rumor is true, that would be a very bad move for Apple.
 
I dont get it, iPhone or iPod, you're still buying an apple, so why would it affect Apples sales if they released a iPhone style iPod?
 
In the conference call apple said people wanted innovative new features. On the surface this is not very innovative. It could be a ruse by apple to throw people off.
 
This has made my day. After just spending £200 on the 80gb model a month or 2 ago, it's nice to know the uber-pod isn't around the corner. I really do think the next one I buy will be a full/touchscreen pod, 7G please guv.
 
I just don't buy this rumor.
There is no reason why Apple should not bring out the widescreen/touchscreen iPod we have all been waiting for.
Just because the iPhone is out there has nothing to do with the iPod.
They are different products in completely different markets.
There are millions of people out there who either cannot or will not buy into the iPhone system and thus a huge market for the ws/ts iPod.
Plus as several have mentioned the phone is a Nano+ and the iPod is a serious media machine. I can see many people owning both.

I'm in the same boat... this is "so what" news if they are released without touch screens or any new interface.
Guess I'll wait some more.
 
I just don't buy it. Forget iPhone sales eating into iPod sales or vice versa. Steve Jobs and his minnions have always focused on delivering great technology. You maybe think something could have been tweaked here or there or even disagreed with it, but the focus has always been squarely on delivering something "insanely great". I don't think that is going to change on August 7th.
