Personally I'll be more interested if they increase the storage capacity bigger than 80gb. My music library won't fit until they have a 100 or so gigabyte drive (12,000 plus songs).

The new interface looks good though. I think touchscreen isn't the best option when you're driving.

Is there not a possibility of Apple expanding the iPod line?

iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod, iPod Touch

iPod: for the music enthusiests who just need lots of room for their music, and those who use it as a portable harddrive, more slimmed down and smaller shape (blackberry), cheaper, great for xmas gifts

iPod Touch: for the film enthisiests who want a larger screen for viewing movies and television shows, possibly more expensive but also includes wi-fi,

ever since the iPhone was released i always had a feeling they'd expand the iPod line to a touch version,

possibiliy? i think so

I find that much more likely than Apple discontinuing the clickwheel. For what it's designed for, the clickwheel is probably the best possible input device for a music-based iPod.

I don't see them getting rid of the current iPod anytime soon., just adding another line. The clickwheel is just too good to get rid of. If you're listening to music in your car, you don't want to be looking down at your touchscreen, you want physical controls that you don't have to look at (or at least the other drivers around you want that).

But if they expand into a line of video-based iPods, then multitouch would make more sense. Aside from going to an ugly square iPod like the mockup, I don't know how you make a widescreen and a clickwheel on the same device.

Do you seriously listen to all your 12000 songs?

Oh yea, I get this question asked EVERY time I say I need an iPod with a large capacity (60GB)...
I don't listen to all the music I carry, no, but I DO like for that music to be readily available on me whenever I feel like listening to it.
Example: I had a 60GB, my fiancee had a 30GB. She hinted she'd like a 60GB so we traded ('cause I love her so much, you know) and now my music library doesn't fit all in this 30GB.
The other day I felt like listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughan 'cause I was talking to this guy at work about it, and I said "oh yeah, I have some on my iPod...."
But after looking for it, I remembered I hadn't sync'd the "Blues" category.
So, Yeah, more is better...

Thanks dude, you've made my day! :p

I think they'll use something like this (in black or white), and won't bother with the clickwheel anymore if there's a touchscreen. They'll go with the iPhone interface.

OR HEY, maybe an "Mini" :apple:TV interface for the Video iPod?

I think that this is NOT the 6G or 7G. It's the Widescreen Video iPod 1G...

I'll take the 120Gig model (the whole Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis series on it!!!)

The market for you is tiny. I haven't seen any stats on iTunes libraries, but I would be willing to bet that no more than 5 percent of users have more than 5,000 songs in their libraries.

The market for larger drives is for video, and even that's a stretch. It's not like you can watch eight hours of video without recharging.

IMHO i just really hope they come out with the same design and UI as the iPhone as the 6G iPod. Also i would love it if they put safari in there with wifi. I have a 3G iPod that is really wanting to be replaced. Cant wait for Aug. 7th! haha

"Instead, they believe that the new iPod is somewhat shorter than existing iPods but will maintain the current screen and click wheel. If true, this would correlate with a recent mockup posted to 9to5mac."

'correlate' ? Always interested in learning new words, especially ones I'm unsure of. So, correlate defined, as found on dictionary.com...

–verb (used with object)
1. to place in or bring into mutual or reciprocal relation; establish in orderly connection: to correlate expenses and income.
–verb (used without object)
2. to have a mutual or reciprocal relation; stand in correlation: The results of the two tests correlate to a high degree.
–adjective
3. mutually or reciprocally related.
–noun
4. either of two related things, esp. when one implies the other.

However, when I was reading the post and that sentence, I thought to myself that 'corroborate' might have been a better choice. Corroborate being defined as, on dictionary.com...

1. to make more certain; confirm: He corroborated my account of the accident.
–adjective
2. Archaic. confirmed.

Who's with me?!:D

Okay, back to legitimate posts...:)

If the new iPod isnt widescreen/ touchscreen no one will buy it. People will stick with what they have and this would kill sales. We will get something great.

Agreed. With regard to whether or not a wide-screen/multi-touch iPod will eat into iPhone sales, Apple should, IMO be asking themselves this;

In the absence of a ws/mt iPod will people in the market for such a device either

1. buy an iPhone
or
2. buy nothing

I'm looking to upgrade my 4G iPod soon, but fall into the 2nd category. A lost sale for Apple. How many others fall into this category, I wonder?

Introducing the new iWant Add :D

why that name? because what do you say when you see that WS iPod? "iWant"

I like to keep a lot of videos on my iPod out of convenience, because I want something to watch on breaks/lunch at work. I've made it through each season of Daria, South Park, Futurama... I need more to watch, but currently, my iPod is dead, and I'm waiting to see what Apple has in store before I worry about a new one. (HD is dead, and it costs so damn much to fix...)

To rotn apple, the usage of "correlate" was saying that the possible truth of the iPods being smaller would carry a relationship with the mock pictures made by 9to5mac. Not necessarily "confirm" it, but just say that the iPod rumors do have a connection with the 9to5mac pictures.

Everybody is talking about touchscreen iPods canibalizing iPhone sales... if "canibalism" was ever a threat to Apple, then they would have seriously considered in the past the risk of a new product (iPhone) canibalizing the sales of their best-selling product (iPod). They saw this wasn't a threat, and there's the result: iPhone is a success, and it goes along well with his iPod brother. Touchscreen iPhone hasn't canibalized click-wheel iPod sales, touchscreen iPod won't canibalize iPhone now.

Exactly my thoughts. Everyone is so quick to speculate that Apple wouldn't let iPod cannibalize iPhone sales, but if Apple holds back on technology and delivers a lousy iPod then it is clear that they would be allowing iPhone sales to cannibalize iPod sales. Is Apple willing to sacrifice its iPod line, which is without a doubt the product responsible for bringing the company to where it is today?

I'm surprised how much negative reaction this has gotten.

I initially thought the mockup iPod looked funny, unpocketable... since it looked wider... but based on this rumor... it's simply the 5G iPod shorter... but not wider.

All things being equal, I want a smaller iPod with the same functionaliy (same screen size), regardless of the ratio.

You're just losing the "white space" above and below the click wheel

If this replaces the clickwheel ipod, nothing precludes Apple from releasing a high end touch screen device.

I can truthfully say I did watch 7.5 hours of video pretty much one after another(road trip) on my PMP(Cowon A2 to be exact). It was inbetween 1 and 2 bars(this is out of 4 bars). What I am saying it is possible to have a device(with built in battery) that is capabale of nearly 10 hours of video while still having something like 17 for audio. Not to mention it is a 4in wide-screen device. If a small Korean company can do this why can't Apple?

Has anyone given consideration to the possibility that this is a ruse by Apple as part of a disinformation campaign designed to deceive rumor sites in the run-up to the launch of the new iPod(s)? The design is ugly, regardless of whether or not it is pocketable. Isn't it possible that Apple had its legal department request the removal of the interface video to make us think that it is legitimate?

What people are sayig is that this design will be ugly and un-apple like. I know what I would prefer to hold and it isn't a square.

How can they put anything less?

Maybe Apple is falling victim to their own success with the iPhone, but this "fake" widescreen iPod looks great to me. It should be at the top of the iPod heap, replacing the current iPod Video. As an iPhone owner I can say that I'd never go back to a smaller, low resolution screen for watching video. The iPhone is amazing.

Now, if I could only stop watching episodes of Lost at work. I think my boss is about to catch on. Sure the first week it was good for demonstration value, but I think they are getting wise...

If I didn't own the iPhone, I would definitely buy the product pictured here. How cool would that be?

ps: I especially like how the mock up has the battery indicator near empty, indicating that the owner has been watching a lot of video. They must really lover their new iPod!

My bet is that people will see it in person and we'll see comments like "it's so small" "it looks much nicer in person than in photos" "it's actually no wider than my current ipod" "it's so much more pocketable"

I think most people are holding off for a widescreen iPod and anything less in their mind is an Apple design failure, IMO I think we have to wait to see what Apple has created before bagging it. So I completely agree with the "it looks good" thing when it will be released.:apple:

btw here's a 5G iPod with the white space removed from top and bottom of the wheel. The mockup, I believe widens it a little.
