Personally I'll be more interested if they increase the storage capacity bigger than 80gb. My music library won't fit until they have a 100 or so gigabyte drive (12,000 plus songs).

The new interface looks good though. I think touchscreen isn't the best option when you're driving.

It was confirmed a while ago that the HDD manufacturers Apple use (forgot name, Hitachi?) had developed a 100gb drive with the same physical size of the 80gb one. 100gb is a given. It's what the lower capacity will be (40 or 60gb I reckon)

Oh yea, I get this question asked EVERY time I say I need an iPod with a large capacity (60GB)...
I don't listen to all the music I carry, no, but I DO like for that music to be readily available on me whenever I feel like listening to it.

Same here, I just like to connect my iPod and have it sync 1:1 my iTunes to my iPod. All my music anywhere I go. There has been so many times where I go to uni with the intention of playing X genre or band, but on my way home I've changed mood or whatever and want something else!

my iTunes library stands at 21gb music, 60gb TV, 30gb film (and 3gb photo, bout 500mb Podcasts). Music is 1:1, TV and films just copy across the unwatched content.

Thats true, the nano has a lot of space it could kill between the screen and the wheel, and the wheel and the bottom.

killing that space and widening it a bit would actually give it a similair ratio to the 5.5g ipod

This also goes along with what arn said about the videos that were removed being nano related. I don't think Apple would put out such a lack luster update on the regular ipod.

I can't see Apple saying "get an iPhone" if you want a multi-touch iPod because the iPhone isn't available everywhere that the iPod is.

Im not down with the hype of the ipod taking over iphone sales, its not like its generated from two different companies. apple will still see money out it either way

they are two different products and i dont think they will half ass the ipod which is there best selling product. obviusly the demand is there for a widescreen/touchscreen ipod. it would be stupid not to put one out now, i think the clickwheel has been pushed as far as it can go.

I think Apple will purposely hurt sales of the iPod without a touch screen so more people buy iPhones. If they release any iPod they can say that they updated the line knowing nobody will buy one.

You either need/want a phone or not. Many people, myself included, will not buy an IPhone (+80/month for two years) because I don't need/want one. If Apple doesn't offer one soon I will either do without or buy a competitive product for video.

Not offering a ws ipod is not going to help IPhone sales but it will hurt IPod sales.

If true, this would be an unusual move.

Would they change such an iconic look for just one generation? Surely they'd have to revert to the traditional form factor in order to incorporate a wide aspect-touch screen.

Seriously... I have an Archos Gmini 402 Camcorder and have never owned an iPod. I have found the Archos machines to have better features at typically cheaper price. I have been eyeing the 604 WiFi for a while and now the 605.

If Archos can make a player that has a 4.3" widescreen/touchscreen at 800x480 and 16 million colors with wifi, ability to record tv with the optional dock. And with the wifi can stream music and video from any computer within the network attatched along with transfer files over wifi and browse the internet. And also have a built in microphone and 30 gb hard drive at a price of $350 american....

Then there is no way apple can not make a touchscreen ipod!!!!!

Archos 605

Archos 604

Speaking of which... the 604 wifi is on sale for $249.99 in the american store.

:(

Wow! That looks really nice. Well, if Apple doesn't come out with a ws/ts IPod I WON'T be buying an IPhone but will be buying one of these. . .

My bet is that people will see it in person and we'll see comments like "it's so small" "it looks much nicer in person than in photos" "it's actually no wider than my current ipod" "it's so much more pocketable"

arn

arn, you've been drinking the ts koolaid again ;)

Thank you, Apple, for saving me so much money this year!

No real news for the good old full size iPod and the 6G is a turkey. Phew, unless capacity is something ridiculous like 160 gb I can keep my two 5g ipods for now.

No new ultraportable Macbook. Saves me $2k.

iPhone is missing GPS and some basic PDA functionality. Saves me $800.

Do you think it would be too awkward if they put the clickwheel on the back at the top, to where it's operated with your index finger? I just picked up my iPod and tried it, and it's not that uncomfortable, and once you owned it for a couple of days, you'd be super used to it. Then they could have a fs iPod that would could be operated in the pocket, and still have a touchscreen if they wanted. I think it would be utilitarian, but not very Apple-pretty.

I can't see Apple saying "get an iPhone" if you want a multi-touch iPod because the iPhone isn't available everywhere that the iPod is.

Not to mention, unless they come up with a 100gb hard drive based iPhone, I won't be putting many movies on my 8gb iPhone.

The BBC just aired a "Top Gear" special in HD, that one episode alone is 7gb.

Now what do you guys say about it costing too much to make a touchscreen ipod with no wifi??

Edit: The 605 is also able to buy and download songs from the Archos music store thing... On the player itself. pretty cool and nice feature eh?
Archos to me is by far the leader in innovative features... Just they arent the best at packing all those features into a small player :(

These Archos players look really great...then you start getting into the tech specs, and things like "Microsoft PlaysForSure DRM" start popping up (g'bye Archos music store)...there's mention of "2 stylii included"...other parts read like typical tech gibberish. The end impression is much like the iPod vs. other/past MP3 players, the iPhones vs. other phones, etc.: others may have all the individual pieces, but only Apple puts them together in a smooth full picture that's easy for the user.

This looks appealing on the surface b/c I want a widescreen portable video player with a decent display, good battery life, and some storage. If Apple can't or won't deliver that in an iPod, no reason I shouldn't look elsewhere - except, per the above, I'm not sure other products are as great as they're cracked up to be.

If anyone here actually GETS an Archos player, I'd love to see a review after using it for a few weeks.

interesting. i was skeptical of a touchscreen ipod. for several reasons.
how close it is to the iPhone launch and getting around the ability to use your iPod while not looking at it. which is a good thing. i don't want to have to take my iPod out every time i want to change a song.

the one thing the iPod is lacking though is a decent screen for watching videos. i don't watch anything on there as it is now. but if it was fullscreen and widescreen like the iPhone i might.

I agree completely, and frankly I am hoping for a non-touch screen ipod. I have the iPhone, and while it's good for music, without the apple headphones "pinch" control, it's a pain to pull it out to change songs. I just want something I can navigate while it's in my pocket, and not have to worry about destroying quite as easily. I'll keep videos on the phone, and my next iPod will be strictly limited to music.

I think Apple is worried about a touch screen wide screen iPod cutting into iPhone sales. Im sure that AT&T has said to Apple that they better not cut into the profit margins with a better cheaper iPod.

The only issue with that is you cannot call someone on an ipod, or get email, or.....

I would love a touch screen ipod, but whatever they come out with I am sure I will get one....:D

Archos is a fairly impressive company, but it is a shame the dropped the gmini line. It is also a shame the new 05 series WiFi devices require a plugin to browse the web. However, Archos biggest down fall is the fact the sound is adequate at best. Best example is Cowon, they also make similar devices(granted the video recording isn't and good as the archos), but the sound of their device makes way up for it. I was about to buy the AV530 or european AV560, but when I heard the device in person I was turned off. Some more on the 605wifi vs 604wifi and some UK pricing. http://www.dapreview.net/comment.php?comment.news.4037

Now as I said if a small Koeran company can do so much, like have plans to release 16gig flash players by the end of the year and get good marks on cnet then surely Apple can do way more.

It's probably been noted before, but I don't think a widescreen and touchscreen iPod would cut into the sales of the iPhone, which only has 8GB to store what they want. The touchscreen iPod many want would seem to be logical in that it would keep consumers satisfied somewhat in what they are getting. Anything less would disappoint many of the customers. Additionally, those looking to get a phone (the iPhone) are still going to get the iPhone if they wanted the communication abilities. If they wanted it for the music, then it was a very expensive way to store only 8gb/4gb of items for them. Most people are wanting an iPhone as their phone. Those wanting a full-on iPod with the same touchscreen type of interface will be getting the iPod. All in all, I think that those wanting one thing (or both) will be getting that one thing (or both) if Apple were to also release the touchscreen iPod. It shouldn't affect sales much, because it isn't like people are going to buy an iPod with touchscreen instead of the iPhone they may have been looking at because it's cheaper. The iPhone gives them the communication possibilities they were probably looking for from the start, and they won't be swayed to buy a similar iPod if it only is a device for videos and music (and photos). They are separate markets, for the most part. And both are from Apple. Even if one were to somewhat get slighted by the other, the money is still getting to Apple.

Thinksecret has not been acurate for years.

So I would take any predicts from them with a huge grain of salt.:D

The next iPod will be widescreen and hopefully touchscreen. At least I hope so.;)

What?

The Archos units above don't have a touchscreen. They have regular buttons that are to the right. CNET did a video review of the 604 and they didn't like it...

The 704 has a touchscreen and that's $549...

Im sure that AT&T has said to Apple that they better not cut into the profit margins with a better cheaper iPod.

So Apple now have to make inferior products because AT&T tells them to. Not a good precedent if true.

If Apple goes through with this update I would be surprised by the company. Its just not very "apple" to put out such a shi*tty product. The time between updates has been really huge--and that has been since the crappy 5.5 revision.
It's been a long long while since apple has actually done anything with this product line. Apple is a smart company and a smart company wouldn't continue to screw around with us with these terrible updates.
Jobs deliberately said the iPhone was the best iPod they've ever made (stressing during the announcement that this was infact an iPod) and he was also quoted saying they are working on the best iPod yet. It just doesn't make good business sense not to produce a full screen iPod when you sell movies over the internet.

This would be a half-ass update.
