I think Apple will purposely hurt sales of the iPod without a touch screen so more people buy iPhones. If they release any iPod they can say that they updated the line knowing nobody will buy one.

Stuck with my 4th Gen.

I bought the 4th generation iPod in December of... '04 I think. Then the 5th generations came out and it was so frustrating that I was stuck with an ancient, black and white display and no video. The technology boost from gens 4 to 5 would make me think that gen 6 must require at least that addition of wide aspect ratio and probably some form of multi-touch.

Apple will say if you want a multi touch buy an iPhone. They have no intention of a touch screen iPod.

no. historically software upgrades are never applied to previous models.

Apart from G5 iPod, right?

No crap there won't be a touchscreen iPod. (assuming the iPods get updated for x-mas) You'd have to be an idiot to think that Apple would either
a) release a better spece'd $250 device that competes directly with their $500 device

What makes you think that the multitouch-iPod would be better specced? It would most likely not have camera, cell-phone or WiFi (an by extension: No email, google maps, youtube or safari). If someone wanted/needed a phone, he would still have to get an iPhone. Repeat after me: iPod is not a phone.

or b) raise the price of iPod so high it gets priced out of the market.

Why would they have to do that? That said, I do think that MT-iPod would be a bit more expensive than the current model. maybe starting from $299 instead of $249.

And if you want to watch widescreen movies on a portable player, get an Archos (or whatever). The iPod has an unsuitable screen, and the iPhone has inadequate amount of storage.

I made a quick mock-up comparison of the current iPod and the rumored iPod. It really helps put into perspective just how fugly the new pod could be. However, I have no doubt that Apple will deliver a multi-touch iPod in August.

I am waiting for the 6th gen... this stuff sounds weird with apple bringing some crappy ipod out before the new one... I say this post is phony and people are just talking ****

correct

There is no way that apple will sacrifice design just to be able to say they shaved an inch off. There are too few people who complain about the size. What I do see happening is apple having a shuffle, nano, fullsize, and miltitouch; the same way that they had and iPod and the iPod photo.

but I really hope they just update the iPod, I would hate to convince my mom that the extra $100 for a touchscreen was worth it.

The market for you is tiny. I haven't seen any stats on iTunes libraries, but I would be willing to bet that no more than 5 percent of users have more than 5,000 songs in their libraries.

The market for larger drives is for video, and even that's a stretch. It's not like you can watch eight hours of video without recharging.

I have +5000 songs and it is nice to be able to have them all in one place. However, I bought a nano for size, gym and speed. Portable video isn't quite there yet. I use my MacBook for that.

I can't see how Apple can sell a video iPod in the UK with no easy (or legal) way to get video onto your iPod. The mass consumer needs to be able to buy it on itunes and there you go. We don't even get TV shows over here. Just Pixar movies and music videos.

Until they sort this out, I can't see why bringing a video iPod to the UK would be a good idea. The majority of people (not on here) don't know what DivX is or have seen a .avi file.

Seriously... I have an Archos Gmini 402 Camcorder and have never owned an iPod. I have found the Archos machines to have better features at typically cheaper price. I have been eyeing the 604 WiFi for a while and now the 605.

If Archos can make a player that has a 4.3" widescreen/touchscreen at 800x480 and 16 million colors with wifi, ability to record tv with the optional dock. And with the wifi can stream music and video from any computer within the network attatched along with transfer files over wifi and browse the internet. And also have a built in microphone and 30 gb hard drive at a price of $350 american....

Then there is no way apple can not make a touchscreen ipod!!!!!

Archos 605

Archos 604

Speaking of which... the 604 wifi is on sale for $249.99 in the american store.

Now what do you guys say about it costing too much to make a touchscreen ipod with no wifi??

Edit: The 605 is also able to buy and download songs from the Archos music store thing... On the player itself. pretty cool and nice feature eh?
Archos to me is by far the leader in innovative features... Just they arent the best at packing all those features into a small player :(

iPhone competition...

One thing that bothers me though...

(Skipped 3 pages, so someone may have said this.)

Everyone talks about the threat to the iPhone, if a cheaper iPod with higher capacity comes out... But don't forget, that's in the USA.

Everywhere else in the world has just the iPod available.

And, the iPhone is a phone... I think 100 million iPod sales show that there is demand for a dedicated, non-phone music player too. I want to watch tv podcasts, youtube downloads (Thank you tubesock) on my way to work. I don't need a phone to do that, and I don't want to by a £270 gadget that is 2 years old to do it either...

Come on Apple, give the UK a piece of that iPhone-like goodness in a high capacity iPod.:)

"Product transition" reported by apple to hurt earnings. Maybe they consider this 5.75G ipod to be only moderately popular?

I know I'll hold off on my planned purchase if this is indeed the approach they take.

Still waiting

If this is true, then I'm glad I just replaced the hard drive in my 2G iPod instead of planning on getting a 6G at Christmas. Guess I'm waiting for 2008's (2009's?) 7G...

It's just that multi-touch isn't needed in an ipod.

I think that apple has a new OS, new click-wheel (illuminated) and they will say that these two together is the best you can desire for listening music or watching some movie. NO NEED OF MULTI-TOUCH on this device.

I'm only hoping that they add some cool way to link it (possibly wireless) to an apple tv or whatever TV.

ciao ciao

If this rumour is correct then I doubt that the new OS (OSX) will be used. I mean why would it be necessary for the proposed device? It's just a slight shrink of the current 5.5G iPod.

I meant the new ipod os (the one that was banned by apple legal) not os x .

The best way to watch a movie would be on a fullscreen ipod, the only way to do this into a fluid design is to make it touchscreen

It's no longer available but I know the one you refer to now. I'd stretch to say that's most likely the next Nano user interface.

In fact I lean toward thinking that all these rumours could refer to a nano update, not a full sized iPod update.

I guess we'll see over the next month.

Thats true, the nano has a lot of space it could kill between the screen and the wheel, and the wheel and the bottom.

killing that space and widening it a bit would actually give it a similair ratio to the 5.5g ipod

Just maybe....

It's possible the new 6th generation iPod's have mutli-touch technology built-in, HOWEVER, so it doesn't eat into iPhone sales, the new iPod only responds to the touch of the user's tongue. The iPhone responds to both the touch of the user's tongue and finger. In other words, iPhone is multi-touch and multi-lick and the iPod is only multi-lick capable.

I can see Steve doing a demo of this iPod on stage now. :p :D
