Wow! So, how will i be able to plug in the thunderbolt cable AND the MacBook Pro Power adapter from the Thunderbolt display cable if the thunderbolt port is on the opposite side of the magsafe connector?

The person doing this mockup has never heard of the Thunderbolt Display, OR Apple dropped the ball!!!

Have you not seen the MacBook Air? It has Thunderbolt and Magsafe on opposite sides, and it works with the Thunderbolt Display.

I wouldn't mind at all losing the Ethernet port.

My first MacBook Pro had its entire motherboard replaced after the pins in the Ethernet port got all bent down (they lost their "spring"). My newest MacBook Pro (2010)? I think the same thing is happening.

I've plugged and unplugged my system to and from Ethernet so much the port started wearing out after a year.

I now just sit on WiFi all the time, with an access point right next to my system. I'm connected at ~130 Mbps, so transfers take longer, but I don't have to worry about messing up a port again.

USB ports haven't worn out on me like Ethernet ports have. If I break a $30 dongle, then I get another $30 dongle. I'd be limited to just ~480 Mbps with USB Ethernet, but that would still be sufficient for what I do.

One thing I like about ethernet is the Netboot feature. At the school district I work at, every summer, we have to reimage every computer (over 1,000). Since it doesn't work over Wi-Fi, we have to use ethernet. Really helps to have gigabit ethernet. Sure, I can do it with a USB-ethernet adaptor, but it would take quite a bit longer to do all those computers.

Its a tight fit for a 13 inch mba.. add 2 inches for a 15 inch and you may have to split the cable more then it allows. :(

Apple has tried to get rid of firewire before (in the 13 inch back in 2008, but they put it back) so it will be no surprise if they get rid of it this time around. Same for the ethernet port. For the people that do use these ports there will be thunderbolt adaptors available.

YES. very good call, we do the same in my school and it takes for ever! However they are all desktops... I would imagine they still keep the Ethernet in the iMacs?

I just ordered a 15-inch Macbook Pro last week because I need it. I was hoping for a refresh this month or early next month, before the return period expires, so I can upgrade without penalty if the new Macbook Pro is worth it.

The current USB-Ethernet dongle is 10/100. What happens if you actually need gigabit? I regularly transfer VM images from my laptop to my NAS and having to do this at 100Mb/s would a real bind, so if the rumour is true I hope Apple see sense and release a faster dongle.

--- Edit

Actually, scrub that. Apple what happens for those users who don't want to carry a dongle, but just want to plug in an ethernet cable?

And Apple can wave goodbye to the professional market.

I know this is just another rumor but it sounds viable. I'm not even sure if I qualify as a "professional" user - but certainly as one who needs professional features. If we assume this turns out to be correct then there will be yet another time where I've been thinking about going Apple - and won't do it.

I see the benefits in Macs and OS-X. Perfect? Nope. There are issues just like there are issues in my current PC/Microsoft world. I really WANT to like the Macs. They're beautiful and a lot of what Apple does really seems to make sense. Other things not so much.

If this materializes they are indeed continuing their path of being strictly a lifestyle product. I need computers for a) reliable Office work b) this and that c) high end photo editing d) music production for live instruments and midi

So I need connections (including firewire) and a reliable OS that for music production doesn't get in the way and can be slimmed down if necessary to address latency issues. And I need a high res screen. The potential for new screens got me interested in looking into Apples again, especially for a new laptop. I won't be sitting at Starbucks with it, lookin' pretty. And if that's the market Apple has in mind then I'm not locking myself in with them throwing myself at their mercy.

I'm really not fond of having cables plugged into both sides of my laptop ughh...

You could just use one side ;)

that might limit you a bit though.

Been made aware of this fact in the forum in a relevant post, but evolution of the mbps is taking far too long, and I do not want to invest so much money in a machine that will probably be "old news" by xmas.

That's a serious no-no purchase.

By the sounds coming from most here this is going to fast for them? what with the Ethernet going etc.

Sounds great can't wait

I really cannot understand all these people moaning about the changes and saying they will loose the 'professional market'. Wake up call this is just incorrect. What's the point in continuing to use outdated technology?

Speaking as a professional or a professional in the making it's important that we adapt and develop alongside technology, so get use to making changes! It's simply the way forward and Apple are the best at adopting this!;)

Going by what I have seen so far it seems worth it.

Although I agree with you, Ethernet is market standard not an outdated tech.

However as long as they have an adapter it's good for me.

Am I the only one who would prefer a larger usable desktop resolution rather than a "retina" display?

At least Apple does not try to sell us a 1366x768 15" laptop like many of its competitors. Whilst I like working on larger resolutions, I am not sure that it going beyond 1920 width on a 17" laptop monitor would make sense for readability. Then again, I guess the 15" could be bumped up to a 1920x1200 panel. That would be great. Much like you I am not sure about this whole retina display mania.

I love everyone bashing Apple for being forward thinking. In 5 years the same people will praise Apple for removing the Ethernet port and old technology in order to advance their products.

I was never a fan of the built in SD slot, just room for dust to gather in my case.

I can see how it will be great for you photographers out there though.

Again, not geared towards professionals. Pro cameras mostly use CF cards. A SD card slot is useless to me but I'm ok with having one. As long as I get a bunch of USB ports, Firewire (two would be nice) and ethernet is essential. I don't care if they make the thing thinner and prettier. In fact, I don't want it thinner - I'd want it less wide. NO the 15" for example there is still plenty of room to make it smaller left and right. And while we're at it how about a better keyboard and the return of real mouse button(s)?

USB 3 to Gb Ethernet is good enough for me.

If you need the ethernet cable plugged it, might as well connect a USB adapter. Doesn't make that much difference.

For the rest of the time having a thinner, sleeker 15 MBP with Retina Display FTW!!
