Seeing this issue on iOS 12.0 on an iPad Mini. This appears to be more related to Family Sharing than an iOS update.

Remember us free software fans who back in the 90s warned everyone about DRM and how insidious it is and how it will keep you from using your own software on your devices eventually?

Well, here we are. A stupid bug is keeping us from running even free applications.

I don't like the future we ended up in. :(

EDIT: I bought Apple devices and didn't follow my own advice, I know. I'm just grumbling about stupid this all is. It's so unnecessary.

It’s a bug. The App Store servers add complexity, sure, but at the end of the day, there were no good ol’ days where bugs in the OS didn’t happen. The 90s? That was when your Mac was full of third-party extensions who could access the entire OS with zero memory protection. Any bug could affect any app. Any crash could bring down the entire machine. This happened all the time. How often does apps not launching in iOS happen?

Deleting the YouTube app and reinstalling it worked for all of 12 hours. I’m dealing with that error all over again, right now, and I refuse to delete the app and reinstall it yet again.

No.

Was planning on updating my devices this weekend but I'll wait until this problem gets resolved for now.
Why? If you read the comments, people on iOS 12 and my iPad is on 13.4.1 and had the issues. Is nothing to do with 13.5.

That’s funny, it’s not happening to me.
It never happens to me until yesterday.

I haven’t updated to 13.5 and still have the issue. I don’t really want the contact tracing on my iPhone.
You realize it’s just an API? For it to work you need to download an app that supports it AND then turn it on? 🙄
Also, you have a smart phone, they can do that anytime they want without an app.

There appear to be multiple problems causing the same issue. I've had one app (with a Family Share) do this for years (iOS 12 or so until now) -- uninstalling and re-installing works for a few weeks and suddenly boom-o again.

Reached out to the developer; they had no idea either.

Happened to me when trying to run WhatsApp. Just uninstalled, reinstalled, then good to go. I've had this before in the past when running stuff my wife purchased (or other way around). Uninstalling-reinstalling worked for us. Kinda sad to still see this around.

I just had this happen to me with YouTube today!!! Sucks! Another iOS bug. Apple used to have hardware that worked well because it cared so much about software. If Apple doesn’t watch out, it will lose its dominance like Blackberry once did. Someone will come along and make great software that works with the hardware in an ecosystem and Apple’s lead will vanish overnight. I cannot wait for the day!!! So sick of Cook’s Apple. Make Apple Great Again. Hire a “product person” as CEO!!!
Go over to Android or some other competitor then. You will soon realise that Apple, although making occasional errors, are still well ahead of the pack in terms of reliability and innovation. Forgive their rare issues and rejoice that you are still enjoying the best eco system available.

Too much time spent on the wrong things....

Apple needs to get back to the "It Just Works" days, narrow its focus, and make its products more reliable.

Do a feature/development freeze for 90 days and focus solely on bug fixes in iOS 13. We don't need iOS 14 right now in my opinion.
Well sorry for stating the completely obvious, but ther slogan was never "it just works, 100% of the time without fail" for sevaral reasons
1: it is not as short and memorable
2: even the most eager appl pr drones realised that they coulldnot say it pecause it is iompossible, things do fauil. and if the put No faliuere aver up front and center they only provide food for litigation (esp in the US it seams)

The more innetesting question is : Does the statment "it just works" still hold tro for a large majorety of apple users? I'm not saying that it does or does not, I don't have the data at my fingertips and tbh that is a bit more resech then I'm prepared to do for a forum comment (call me lazy if you want, yu might have a chance of beeing correct). I'm not defending apple here, they have people on staff for that, it just struvk me as an innteresting point to mak so take it for what it is. And no, I'm not angry or ofended and this is in now way an atack on you or enyone else in the tread (ok that was the disclamer out of the way)

Happened to me with YouTube on iPad. Offloading the app fixed it. Not a big deal.
Ok this made no sense to me, the youtube app is free. or did you mean sharing of premium (ie payed) content via the app?

This is probably a server-side outage that doesn’t have anything to do with iOS 13. It seems to affect 12 as well.

iTunes? I thought that was deprecated and replaced some time ago
It is such a cliché...

What’s the point of sharing free apps with family members?
It’s happening with my kid’s iPad.

They technically are buying the apps with their own email IDs but I have family sharing on because I must approve all their purchases. Given they are so young, I have their devices locked down and all installs must go through me, via a pop up that appears on my iPhone. Also, at bedtime, they are locked out of their apps. This is native Apple functionality so I’d expect it to work, but nonetheless we’ve gotten this error.

For us, it never happened until iPadOS 13.5.

Only that you don’t „own“ the software, even if you purchased it and in most cases, companies reserve the right to revoke your license or make the software unaccessible. So if DRM stops working, intentional or not, you have no rights. It’s terrible. Let’s say there’s a bug that prevents you from using your purchased software and want to fix it yourself and publish a fix online. They could say that it’s a breach of the licensing agreement and copyright and you can’t reverse engineer their software. So essentially your buying something that can be disabled at any time and it’s illegal to fix it.

I don't think this is DRM ... I think it's a kernel permissions issue ... the 'shared' being used in the error seems like the device user doesn't have permissions to run an app or the app permissions has changed (either on device or from the App Store server) after a recent update.
I also believe it is a permissions issue, which I believe is on the App Store end.

This happened to me also on my kids' iPad through Family Sharing. I ended up resetting the iPad and then redownloading the apps again through Family Sharing and then it worked again. a bit of a hassle

Hi folks,

After reading the thread, at least we knew:
1. This happens to both iOS 12.x and iOS 13.x. It is not related solely to 13.5.
2. This happens to all iOS/iPadOS devices, including iPhone and iPad. Not sure about iPod touch.
2. Delete and reinstall the app fixes this issue, but the same problem may come back again.
3. Apple is not officially acknowledging this issue yet.

Could you guys help me to figure out two things?
1. Does this happen to Apple apps (e.g., Mail, Calendar, Photos, etc.)?
2. Do people without enabling Family Sharing also have this issue?

The YouTube app in my iPhone XS (iOS 13.3.1) had this issue suddenly this morning. I have the Family Sharing enabled and I am the family administrator.

Well, I wish it's not COVID-19 related :p

Many thanks.

So far, for me with activated family sharing and being the organisator, it only happened to WhatsApp yet.

Folks, here's the official word from Apple. First, Apple has never heard of this issue and they talk to billions of people every hour. This is literally the first time the Senior Advisor has EVER heard of an issue with apps opening and the Senior Advisor has been working on iOS for over 30 years. So, what you need to do to resolve this is perform a hard reboot of your phone. If the issue persists, you'll need to Erase all Content and Settings and set-up the phone is new (DO NOT restore from backup). If the issue persists, you'll need to plug your device into a computer and do a fresh installation of the OS and NOT restore from backup. If the issue still persists, you'll need to collect some logs by running sysdiagnose with Mail logging enabled. Once that is finished, you'll upload the zipped file to Apple and it will be escalated to Engineering. Engineering will get back to you within 24-48 hr.
Well, that is interesting. iOS was first released in 2007, so either that Senior Advisor was lying about working with iOS for over 30 years, or this story is made up. The procedure described is totally unacceptable to any user, and would destroy any evidence, making the bug impossible to reproduce.
