So far, for me with activated family sharing and being the organisator, it only happened to WhatsApp yet.

Thanks.

I am the family administrator. My iPhone has the problem on YouTube app and one of the family member encounter the problem on Line app.

For now, I have only heard issues on third-party apps and those who had family sharing enabled. I am gathering more information to confirm this is the case.

I’m still on 13.4.1, and have this bug. Others in my family are on 13.5 and have had it intermittently.

Oddly enough, in some cases, just waiting has also resolved the issue. I’m wondering if it’s something on the backend, rather than to do with the iOS update...
Well, there is one very rare situation where this error message would be correct: If you purchase an app, share it with your family, then ask for a refund and get your money back. Now you don't own the app anymore, and its correct to tell family members they can't use it anymore and would have to buy it. And that would be done by the backend. So the iPhones of your family members would sometimes ask the backend if they are still allowed to use those apps, and the backend gets it wrong. That seems a reasonable explanation. And the unload app / download again means the backend is asked again, and this time gets it right.

If that is the case then this should be fixed without anyone having to update their phones.

Does this happen with default Apple apps? That's all I use.
It would happen with apps that you downloaded and then shared with your family, and only for your family members, not for you. So it wouldn't happen with the default apps because you never shared them.

Well, unfortunately, this does not happen only to “shared” apps. Or bravely to say that there is nothing to do with an actual paid and shared app within a family.

All my friends who are having this issue have self-downloaded apps (not installed via the family share function) in trouble and all of those are free apps. I am hoping to confirm other users are facing the same situation because I suspect this is an iCloud’s backend issue not related with paid or not paid.

What app is that in the screenshot with the thicc cat and lasers in the icon - in the folder to the right of Apple Music? I gotta have it.
Lol, you choose what apps you have on your phone by how cool the icons look???
I’m soooo out of touch... I’ve only been downloading apps that I’ll use.

One of my OCD friend actually group apps with similar color scheme into one page. So, his springboard looks quite beautiful. If the icon design of the app sucks, he would move it to the last page.

I just had this happen to me with YouTube today!!! Sucks! Another iOS bug. Apple used to have hardware that worked well because it cared so much about software. If Apple doesn’t watch out, it will lose its dominance like Blackberry once did. Someone will come along and make great software that works with the hardware in an ecosystem and Apple’s lead will vanish overnight. I cannot wait for the day!!! So sick of Cook’s Apple. Make Apple Great Again. Hire a “product person” as CEO!!!
Absolute truth! Apple is ripe for being knocked off the pedestal. Steve Jobs's quote about profit and product is in danger of coming home to roost: “If you keep your eye on the profit, you’re going to skimp on the product. But if you focus on making really great products, then the profits will follow.”

That's pretty cool...

It's meant to be IRONIC, based on Apple's usual response to these kind of issues.

Well, that is interesting. iOS was first released in 2007, so either that Senior Advisor was lying about working with iOS for over 30 years, or this story is made up. The procedure described is totally unacceptable to any user, and would destroy any evidence, making the bug impossible to reproduce.

I've had this problem with GoodNotes 5 bought by another family member.

worse yet, I got a receipt today that I was charged another $8 for GoodNotes.

I had already purchased it and shared via Family Sharing.

Well sorry for stating the completely obvious, but ther slogan was never "it just works, 100% of the time without fail" for sevaral reasons

The iTunes Store has a similar slogan: ”If you buy a film, you can watch it anytime and as often as you want”.

i had a fight with a support agent yesterday, who abruptly terminated the call after I asked him if it was Apple’s policy to tell lies. The slogan should say ”If you buy a film, you can watch it anytime and as often as you want, unless it gets removed from the iTunes Store”. My plea that I had wasted my money fell on deaf ears.

Hey, Arnold Kim wrote an article! Not entirely necessary since Juli’s here walks through the fix steps, but cool to see. Hi, Arnold. Thanks for MacRumors.

Absolute disagree. Relax. As if there were no sw bugs in Jobs’ Apple? And do you remember the Apple Maps rollout? And as if no other OS gets a bug? Consumer operating systems are incredibly complex now, and these things will happen from time to time. The unrealistic demand constant perfection. The rest of us hope they’re few, and easily fixable (like this one) or rapidly remedied (like Apple almost always does).

Can’t. Everyone’s iPhone comes with them so by definition they’re not shared. More significantly, you have an iPhone and have never installed a third party app? Wow.

It's meant to be IRONIC, based on Apple's usual response to these kind of issues.
The problem with this is that IRONIC came over as trolling, and there's a risk that some people would read it, believe that the info comes from a reliable source, and indeed reset their phones, losing everything. Not funny.

And I have no idea what you think "Apple's usual response to these kind of issues" is.

Nope. Too many security vulnerabilities, third-party ad systems and tracking. Just don't trust them.

You can assert whatever you’d like, but the absurdities (Apple never hearing of an issue with opening apps, talking to billions of people an hour, iOS being around for 30 years, etc.) make it crystal clear it is an ironic joke. Relax and enjoy some levity.

McDonald’s app did this a few days ago. Offloading and reinstalling fixed - can reinstall right away within the offload screen so no need to go to App Store.

Seems to be fixed now. I got 15 app updates today, as if they reset / fixed things back to before this all happened.

Hi viettanium & peelage,

Thanks for letting me know that there are a lot of updates happening. It reminds me to give it a try.

My YouTube app had this issue. So, I clicked on the “View in App Store” in the error message. It brought me directly to the YouTube app page in App Store. The blue button on the right said “Update”. I clicked it, let the process complete, and cl the “Open”.

Voilà! My YouTube app can open normally now.

Could anyone try this and let me know the “update” trick fix’s this issue?

Thanks!

That’s not possible. Apple’s official position on the matter is that this is the first they have ever heard of this issue and they talk to billions of people an hour. So, to resolve this known issue, be sure to keep your iOS and apps up to date!

Yeah I’ve seen 200 app updates in the last hour, but they are older updates. Surprised there isn’t an article anywhere on this.

Confusing...

Apple should really provide both ways (holding down on home screen) *and* giving the "option" of keeping data,, NOT only from settings.

Wasn’t this joke unfunny the first time you made it?
