this is... ...RUMORS

This, I like a lot! First of all this is the real core business of MacRumors taken to the level it should be.

The design itself is more or less ok, obviously we'll all fall in love with it when they'll hit the shelves, but I'd like to see the same design with the iMac or iPad1 styled backplate: Slightly curved and with a sleek edge...

all the same: good job MR!

Tapered?

I really don't think that the top to bottom taper will happen. Apple may go for thinner and have the all-around edge tapered (like iPad2)but not thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. This would have an adverse affect on viewing, say, a video in landscape mode or playing a game by holding the edges of the device. Also, I do not see why Apple would go with a touch sensitive home button when they can incorporate this function in a part of a larger screen (a gesture maybe?). If they keep a mechanical home button then I can understand the space taken up in this way. Also, I think Apple may be planning touch sensitive volume controls through gestures or a touch sensor on the side instead of actual buttons. Anyway, My thoughts...

Love the look but unsure how the taper will feel in hand when using it sideways.
Can't wait to find out.

This mock-up is a beauty, and i can only imagine how beautiful the official iPhone 5 will look like.

Great job MR!

I just hope that the case leaks were indeed legit.

Nice renders!

Looks OK but....

As a designer myself, I don't like the asymmetric bezel and I don't think Apple would do that either, but they might I suppose, look at the iMac?

I don't think they'll change the screen size and the edge to edge screen is still a way off I think - sorry SciFi fans!

I really don't think they'd change the shape of the home button it's too iconic now and I believe they have a patent on the circle one. Maybe it won't be a physical button this time and they need the extra area for gestures [if the case designs are accurate of course].

I don't mind the iPad style back but the glass on the iPhone 4 is sooo much cooler IMO.

Good points, I agree. The asymmetric bezel is not something Apple will do...that's just not their style with mobile devices.

I do not particularly like it, but it seems i am in the minority so i guess i ¡ will just have to wait for the real thing.

Asymmetry and uneven mass distribution in a multi-orientation Apple device?

Yep, my thoughts too.

Even up the top and bottom bezel with a slightly smaller/adjusted screen, lose the tapered back and I'd think it would be closer to something in production.

Any measurements they have sound more for the iPod Touch than the iPhone.

There's only 3 things that bother me with this design:
1. That home button is fugly, I like the circle more.
2. If Apple decides to go with the aluminum back like the iPod Touch and iPad, then I'd rather keep my iPhone 4. Those backs are scratch magnets, not to mention they dent easily and are extremely thin.
3. As phones get thinner, camera quality will suffer. It'll have such a wide field of view!

I am not too careful with my devices so they scratch easily, while the iPod touch is the most scratch magnet device on earth, i have yet to see any hair lines or dents or any damage to the back of my original iPad and the back of this purported iPhone 5 is closer to that of the iPad.

Make like a macbook and only enhance the internals then I will be fine. As long as we have Ives we'll be fine.
What purpose does the bezel serve anyway?

Wouldnt the format on all iPhone apps look sketchy if it suddenly had to fit this broader screen?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; sv-se) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Really nice modeling, great work! :)

I think that fat fingers would be inadvertently clicking the sides when you grip the phone, unless the software detects for that and adjusts accordingly.

Although I do love the look...like a tiny iPad2.

Stop The Madness!

I really don't like the look of that Home button, and I hope Apple loses their obsession with "Thinner & Lighter" on their phones.

If it gets too light it'll just feel cheap, I'd prefer to have the thickness of the iPhone 4 and have a better battery inside.

I do love the idea of a bigger screen though.

My thoughts EXACTLY! I said the same thing when they launched the iPad2 and were touting how they made it thinner Apple needs to forget about trying to be the thinnest, how about using the thickness to provide an on-device HDMI port instead of some stupid dongle!

I see no need to keep making the iPhone thinner and thinner, only making it more fragile. The iPhone 4 thickness is fine no need to be anorexic, use that extra space to improve the battery life! My wife has the 4th gen touch and I hate using it because it feels so fake and breakable, I much prefer the solid feel of my iPhone 4.

That design looks really nice. Hopefully it looks something like this.

One question though, Why in all the mock ups is the home button oblong? I think that the home buttons look in the mockup is horrible, if it were round as usual it would look amazing!

As stated in the article, case designers have been instructed to keep an oblong area around the home screen clear. Whether or not the button is physically that shape or Apple plans to use the area for something else (e.g. gestures) is up to speculation.

So what you guys initially doubted when you reported on This Is My Next's design is now the exact same design they had said months ago?

http://thisismynext.com/2011/04/22/iphone-5-design/

The front looks similar, but the back/body is totally different. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't that the very reason for the skepticism? It would be imbalanced when held in two hands and would feel different if held in different orientations.

Wow, those look great!

I have my doubts that they will make the screen larger, though. That would require devs to update all their apps with the new dimensions. Until then, we would have the disconnect, and many apps would likely have a black border around them to fill the empty space (much like iPhone apps running on iPad).

I hated when there was a bunch of non retina apps on the iPhone 4...some of my apps STILL haven't updated which I can't stand!

It will probably be slightly bigger in physical size, same in resolution - no app updates required. Even though that would make it SLIGHTLY less sharp, the Retina Display already has plenty of leeway on that front.

The iPhone is a separate issue, but thinness and lightness are quite important for tablets - possibly more important than any other product. You're constantly holding it between your thumb and forefinger, on your forearm like a clipboard, handing it to other people, etc. Something real and significant happens when you go from 2 pounds to 1 pound, 15 mm to 8 mm - it's far from pointless.

Thinness for the iPhone 4 is not really an issue, but tapering would certainly make it more comfortable than its current sharp-edged shape. And, as a user of a 15" MBP, I am definitely considering a MacBook Air at my next upgrade. The lightness, thinness, open up so many more possibilities for mobility. I wouldn't hesitate to put it on an airplane tray table, whip it out for a moment, bring it all over my house, etc. Right now my MBP is powerful but is kind of a hassle to carry all over the place.
