Last month, we saw a leak of the design specification which claimed to be for the iPhone 5. Chinese case manufacturers seem to be betting on that design as they've already started producing cases based on that design document. We'd even requested and received some early renders based on the case designs.

Given how predictive the case designs have been in the past, we commissioned CiccareseDesign to create high quality renderings made as closely as possible to the original leaked case designs. Measurements were taken against the original case design leaks, and then imported into 3D modeling software.

The designs show manufacturers what areas need to be open or exposed for cases, but reveal little else. In the past, this has caused some misunderstandings about future features. iPad 2 cases seemed to suggest an extra port at the top of the device, but that turned out to be a space for a microphone hole. Similarly, there are a few areas on the iPhone 5 case designs that are open to interpretation. Click on the images for a larger view.

The elongated hole for the home button has suggested that the home button may itself also become more oval in shape. That is the direction our designer took as well. It's also possible, however, that the home button will retain its round shape and Apple has simply allowed extra space for swiping across the home button in a left to right or right to left manner. These's been some speculation that Apple could allow such a gesture for users to quickly switch between multitasking apps.

The exact screen size is another aspect that was hard to determine on the design drawings alone. Our renderings have enlarged the screen size to the space shown on the case designs. But, Apple has introduced a "swipe down" from the top of the screen notification system in iOS 5 that could benefit from some extra finger-space near the top of the screen in order to properly register. So, it may be that the screen isn't quite as large as depicted by the cases, and simply Apple allowing for extra space for these swipes. The representation here, however, does show a 4 inch screen which preserves Apple's current screen ratio. Rumors have suggested that Apple may be enlarging the screen size in the upcoming iPhone models.

The back of the device has tapered edges which makes it look much closer to the iPod touch. As well, there had been rumors that Apple would be abandoning the glass backing of the iPhone 4 and instead moving back to an aluminum design.

The final dimensions of the new design are calculated to be: 4.33" x 2.36" and .27" thickness at the top and .21" at the bottom In comparison, the iPhone 4 dimensions are: 4.5" x 2.31" x .37". So the new design is actually shorter than the existing iPhone 4, but slightly wider and thinner.

Assuming the leaked case designs are accurate, the iPhone 5 should be close in appearance to these renderings. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in September or October of this year.

Can't be! What kind battery can put into it?

Am I the only one who doesn't like the top of the phone? I'm talking about the part above the screen. It looks weird, because it's so short. Doesn't fit in the whole symmetrical design concept, since the part under the screen is longer... :S
But other than that? Beautiful! But now think about all the stuff that is inside this beast. You thought Infinite Blade looked great? I can't wait what Epic or Crytek are going to do with this thing!

No way

why the need for the wide home button?! now we'll accidentally hit the button more often

why not just make the home button a touch-sensitive screen button?

I have the HTC Evo and one of the most annoying things about it is the touch sensitive front buttons. Handing the phone to another person is so annoying when you're trying to show them something. 9/10 times they press a button by accident and ask "what am I supposed to be looking at? Its gone."

I switched to the Evo because I hate AT&T. Will be a happy camper when the iPhone is on Sprint!

I really don't like the look of that Home button, and I hope Apple loses their obsession with "Thinner & Lighter" on their phones.

If it gets too light it'll just feel cheap, I'd prefer to have the thickness of the iPhone 4 and have a better battery inside.

I do love the idea of a bigger screen though.

I agree with you. Keep the thickness about the same but shrink the components to make room for a bigger battery.

a phone with unequal weight and size when held horizontally...FAIL.

it also looks like an ipod touch!!

Funny, when actual iphone 4 rumor picts surfaced a while back most at MR disliked the design. Now, we have this supposed design which is less-new-looking (looks exactly like an iPod Touch) and has an unequal weight and size distribution when used widescreen, and most of thr MR kids love it!

Hope this is not the design for the high-end new iPhone 5! If anything this is the design for the iPod Touch 5G.

EDIT: After reading more than the first 3 pages of comments, it seems not all people at MR have lost their (design) senses...

Love almost everything, but why not put screen in the middle. It doesn't align, it just looks add.

No lock slider?

Is it missing the lock slider? I appreciate the ability to silence my phone quickly and without having to remove it from my pocket. I hope they keep it.

damnit...I left ATT and went to sprint because I was betting that it would just look like the iPhone 4. But the two issues, I had with the iPhone, if they fix it then ugh...i would have to go to back and then lose the grandfathered unlimited data!

Damn you!!! Damn me!!! Damn everyone!!!

I really like the larger screen and the changed home button, but I do not like the disproportional size of the sections above and below the screen. On every iPhone before, they are the same (3/4"). The bottom section being larger than the top section looks wrong. Apple's designs are usually symmetrical.

Other than that, I really like the iPad-esque aluminum design. It really does look good in black or white!

Zomg!

Man, if the iPhone 5 has the same back as the iPad 2.......i'll be sooo happy! I really hope this is just about what Apple has planned in terms of design, it looks sick!

I would buy it if it looks like this, that is, the ipod touch, unless I can get a data plan : /

I love it. I want this so bad it's not funny. It's freaking thin though! Perfect for an otterbox. Should come out really nice. Only surprise I see coming out of this is that it's a 3G iPod Touch haha

Sincere ,I don't Like It Poor Design ,I wished That The New On comes With A BIgger Screen 4 sure thinner and like Iphone 4 design;),if With Don't Happen There's No point to buy a New one ,well Pretty features will be Nice Also Like NFC and 64G storage ,but i think that apple won't will realase all This Feature in the same Iphone ,I luv The Iphone4 Design Back Glass Even being Fragile..

I guess I am one of the people who isn't a fan of this design. I have a feeling it'll probably look better in the store though. ;)

Me too. I love the current iPhone 4 design with the glass back. I do not like the current iPod Touch with the flat aluminum back.

I hope this is not the real iPhone 5 design. A thinner iPhone 4 with a larger screen would be ideal.

You know, I don't think it,ll be an oblong home button - I reckon it's the regular button, with a touch button on either side, similar to the samsung galaxy s. Maybe one for multitasking? Who knows.
And I also agree with what people are saying about how the top space is smaller than the bottom one. It looks kind of irregular.
Except for that, I really love the design. That back looks better than previous models in my opinion, and a lot better than the iPod aluminium backs - they would scratch every time you put them down.
Great mockup MacRumors! :)

I have the HTC Evo and one of the most annoying things about it is the touch sensitive front buttons.

While I agree the capacitive buttons can be annoying, I can see how this elongated shape can be used to lessen the accident touching. Perhaps they will require you to swipe the width of the button to make the gesture, which should eliminate most of the unintended touches.

Oh hell, more money to spend! This will be the reason i come back to apple form the dark side (bb)......as long as its for sale via the apple store sim free......and it doesn't cost my right arm! :D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

So it's going to have a larger screen and be significantly thinner at the same time? I wonder how they'd get the same or better battery life out of this...
