As stated in the article, case designers have been instructed to keep an oblong area around the home screen clear. Whether or not the button is physically that shape or Apple plans to use the area for something else (e.g. gestures) is up to speculation.

Click home button to wake up, and swipe along the home button to unlock.
Instead of now, click home button, then reach up to the screen to swipe to unlock.
Seems like an obvious and needed change to me.

like one other person said, "no chance in hell". first off the elongated home button, for what purpose? gesture support? correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the entire screen used for gestures? so this is just a stupid idea to even consider and not gonna happen. as much as an apple fan as i am, they have been a bit lack luster the past few releases. one only need to look at the ipad 2 for clues as to the iphone 5. not for new features, but lack there of. the ipad 2 could have easily had a retina type display but it didn't. the iphone 5 is going to have the same display as the 4. the only thing i could possible fathom, which is a long shot at best is a 16:9 display. but in the mobile area i think thats less of a concern. but again, every single iphone to this point has been the exact same size, 480x320 points. the unibody design of almost every mac product as well as the ipad is another indicator of apples direction. take the ipad 2, shrink it down and throw out all the bells and whistles and then you will have the iphone 5. the only new notable components will be a gpu and the a5 chip. which leads me to my next point. no chance in hell the new phone will be called the "4gs" or any retarded variation. having the a5 chip with ios 5 and the new 5th generation phone just makes apple wet with anticipation and a marketing dream for an "iphone 5". again, don't be surprised if all you get is a cpu and case upgrade like the ipad 2 did. with icloud apple will tell you, you don't need more the 32gb of flash. with ios 5 updates along with arc you don't need 1gb+ of memory. im sure they will also throw in something about algorithms where you don't even need a higher mp camera. im gonna get one regardless cuz my current iphone has been on its death bed for some time. but i am not expecting anything truly revolutionary or mind blowing. i hope i'm wrong...

Also, given there will be no resolution improvements (currently at 640x960), won't having a larger screen make the iPhone 5 slightly less "retina" quality? *tongue-in-cheek*

Thats correct, but there's plenty of pixels to go. I think Apple planned this all along, they knew 326 ppi or whatever was overkill for iP4 but wanted to set it up properly so they could enlargen the screen and keep that resolution.

Also, when the screen gets bigger, everything on the screen follows that enlargement. That means we don't have to be quite as close as with a 3.5 inch screen.

So in actual use the resolution will look just as good I think. Pixel peepers might of course notice a difference when holding the phone too close.

Wouldn't your hand/thumb keep hitting the screen? Visually I like it but I feel like I would register a lot of accidental touches if I don't hold it carefully.

Your holding it wrong :)

My guess would be a combination (something like the current Mac trackpads). It's a clickable physical button, but also a touch-sensitive surface for gestures. My hope - as I said above - would be it's for swiping for switching between apps.

That to me makes sense, since the main purpose of the existing Home button is to quit an app, or bring up the app switcher; so it's retaining the same purpose, just making it quicker.

The edge to edge glass looks so ugly. Hopefully the real product will keep the same amount of bezel as the iPhone 4 and just make the actual handset larger. The HTC desire HD is a nice size with a 4.3 inch screen and is still pretty compact so a 4 inch screen iPhone 5 would still be good size to handle.

am I the only one who doesn't need it thinner? the iPhone 4 is already pretty thin to hold as a phone. Maybe it's just me and my big hands, but I need something a little more substantial...

I definitely do not need it to be thinner, or have a bigger screen. The current size is just fine. I do however need the following...

1. make the back panel either non-glass, or stronger glass.
2. give it some curvature.
3. eliminate the antenna issues.

I like an overall flat back so that it doesn't wobble on a table, but the edges should be rounded so that it doesn't feel sharp in the hand. I like my phones curvy so they feel good to hold. Of course unlike some people here, I am a big fan of the original iPhone. I would gladly welcome a redux of this design.

Beautiful! I hope it really is this thin. After using the current iPod Touch, the iPhone 4 feels very thick and bulky to me. I hate the way the iPhone 4 feels compared to the way my 3G was, so hopefully this design will make it comfortable to hold, once again.

Also, I love the idea of the home button having a gesture area. I played around with the HP Veer a few weeks ago and fell in love with the way the gesture area works. Also, it would be great if the home button would light up for notifications like the Veer does!

How will this work when designing the screen in Xcode?

retina display made the system revolve around "points", not "pixels"...

Will we just have a new "device", such as the difference between the iPad and iPhone screens, which are current options while developing?

Anyone shed some light on this??? Rumored or whatever, i'm curious

Elongated Button

I'm thinking what would be the reason for making the button longer. Surely not because of wide fingers. How about this for an explanation. Left and Right buttons to scroll through the running apps and the center works as it does now?

Doing it this way will get rid of the double click to see the open the running apps and scroll from there. All you would have to do is click left or right to see the apps and they would show the running apps across the middle just like you click Shift-Tab on your laptop or desktop.

I like the thinness and the bigger screen. Not a fan of it being tapered and not a fan of it looking much cheaper. (Plastic buttons, etc) Looks generic. iPhone 4 has class and style.

I agree. This looks like a huge step backwards from the iPhone 4.

I really hope Apple doesn't make a phone this ugly.

That home button looks awful.

Didnt everyone say this about the iPhone 4 when Gizmodo leaked the phone, and now look:rolleyes:

I don't care to argue about the phone's specs, what it will and won't have. I want to point out how exciting this story is, and how well done it was. It was a really enjoyable, comprehensive recap of the total sum of iPhone 5 rumor flurry in visual form. Bravo!

Aaaaaaaand I CAN'T WAIT FOR MY IPHONE 5!!!

Last month, we saw a leak of the design specification which claimed to be for the iPhone 5. Chinese case manufacturers seem to be betting on that design as they've already started producing cases based on that design document. We'd even requested and received some early renders based on the case designs.

Given how predictive the case designs have been in the past, we commissioned CiccareseDesign to create high quality renderings made as closely as possible to the original leaked case designs. Measurements were taken against the original case design leaks, and then imported into 3D modeling software.

The designs show manufacturers what areas need to be open or exposed for cases, but reveal little else. In the past, this has caused some misunderstandings about future features. iPad 2 cases seemed to suggest an extra port at the top of the device, but that turned out to be a space for a microphone hole. Similarly, there are a few areas on the iPhone 5 case designs that are open to interpretation. Click on the images for a larger view.

The elongated hole for the home button has suggested that the home button may itself also become more oval in shape. That is the direction our designer took as well. It's also possible, however, that the home button will retain its round shape and Apple has simply allowed extra space for swiping across the home button in a left to right or right to left manner. These's been some speculation that Apple could allow such a gesture for users to quickly switch between multitasking apps.

The exact screen size is another aspect that was hard to determine on the design drawings alone. Our renderings have enlarged the screen size to the space shown on the case designs. But, Apple has introduced a "swipe down" from the top of the screen notification system in iOS 5 that could benefit from some extra finger-space near the top of the screen in order to properly register. So, it may be that the screen isn't quite as large as depicted by the cases, and simply Apple allowing for extra space for these swipes. The representation here, however, does show a 4 inch screen which preserves Apple's current screen ratio. Rumors have suggested that Apple may be enlarging the screen size in the upcoming iPhone models.

The back of the device has tapered edges which makes it look much closer to the iPod touch. As well, there had been rumors that Apple would be abandoning the glass backing of the iPhone 4 and instead moving back to an aluminum design.

The final dimensions of the new design are calculated to be: 4.33" x 2.36" and .27" thickness at the top and .21" at the bottom In comparison, the iPhone 4 dimensions are: 4.5" x 2.31" x .37". So the new design is actually shorter than the existing iPhone 4, but slightly wider and thinner.

Assuming the leaked case designs are accurate, the iPhone 5 should be close in appearance to these renderings. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in September or October of this year.

Anyone else think that between the leaked details on this sucker and the expected September release date that we might see a merger between the iPhone and iPod touch lines (or a case scenario where the former takes over the latter)? Or is it just me?

+1

I've never been convinced by the look and ergonomics of the iP4. These renders certainly look more like the iPhone I want. Heres hoping for Sept rather than Oct!

Agree 100%! I've never been convinced by the 'break if you drop it at all' aspect of the iPhone 4. But I'm hoping more for October, because it'll give me more time to save up for the phone!

no no no

I want the next iPhone. but I do not want a non-symetrical bezel. I do not like. it makes landscape mode feel wonky.
