Yes, I think it is. The first 20 pages of the MacBook Pro section in this forum are filled with threads about the new MacBook Pro. It is just insane!

I think Apple hit a very sensitive spot here. It just gave power users what they wanted. The new MacBook Pro is not for me, and not for casual users. It is for those hardcore users who need, or want, or just rejoice on, all this power.

Just for the sake of comparison, the first 20 pages of the MacBook Air section get us back to more than one year ago (October 2020), before the release of the M1 MacBook Air. The first 20 pages of the iMac section will get to threads before the release of the redesigned model in April 2021. But the MacBook Pro... the first 20 pages get us to October 2021 when it was announced. Hype comparable to the iPhone. The users of this forum cannot stop discussing it. It will probably not be the best-selling Mac, but perhaps one of the most talked about.

In just a word... wow! I am impressed, not by the Macs themselves (which do not meet my own requirements), but by the reception it had on the community of enthusiasts! Kudos to Apple!

Yep it's crazy cool that the new MacBook Pros are the best laptops ever made by anyone. They have the best engineering, most performant, incredible technology such as the new Apple premium displays, and the raw computing power that utterly obliterates Intel on every benchmark.

Apple is so far ahead of the competition now that they will never be caught

Apple lied though.. I understand when Intel is used in Macs price is high, why is Apple charging so much now they make their own processors ? No reason at all it has to be that high.

Intel 11900k - 6 billion transistors
nvidia rtx 3080 - 28 billion transistors

M1 Pro 33 billion
M1 Max 57 billion
Apple chips are on a much more expensive state of the art process node - definitely not cheap to make the Apple Silicon

ITS UN-UPGRADABLE JUNK. Not worth my money.. well, most of us in Ukraine are poor, but I just don't like the M1.
It's all the have nots making up fake posts about how lame the new macbook pros are, trying to justify why they won't get one when it's just they cant afford it.
@Macbookprodude: you are literally confirming EnderTW's point in this thread.

Take those 2 together, and you have perfectly balanced review.
Lets just call it a YIN YANG review

To be fair he does have a point - though Apple isn't in the business of making mass-market computers. We who hang in this forum as consumers who can afford the luxury of a modern Mac computer that caters to our wants more than our needs really should appreciate how lucky we are.

Why the PoW of someone how can’t afford a product for price could be considered a “review”?
Price is not the point of a performance machine, who cares about prices? Only who could purchase it, and I think who could spent 3/6K € on a computer is someone ho don’t care about that, or cause it will be a work machine with a good ROI or cause he is rich.
So again, who cares about prices?

Price - and modularity - is definitely a point of a performance machine: Everyone including professionals whose computers are paid for by their companies would be very happy if Apple didn't charge an arm and a leg for features they need (RAM, storage), but as I strongly prefer running MacOS over other systems for my daily driver and I do have the possibility to save up for a machine that has all of these features, I'm a customer.
But yes, more than a decade ago my experience with the macOS world started out via the Hackintosh route because I at that point literally could not afford a real Mac.

I don’t think so.
I’ve worked for years as a video maker in one of the two major broadcast tv group of my country, Mac Pro were the less priced pieces of hw we technicians working about. The sell compartment managers aren’t impressed of Apple bills, they are more impressed for everything else, also sw licenses. And corruption was a good honey for them about prices. :)

I don't think they are such expensive, it's only a bigger m1 die. Arm cpus are cheap in production.

The m1 cots around 50 US Dollars:

"The $2.5 billion figure was determined by Sumit Gupta, IBM's AI strategy lead, who calculated Apple's M1 production should cost in the range of $40 to $50 per chip against the cost of procuring Intel Core i5 processors at around $175 to $250 a chip."

Apple is only greedy and knows there are many Apple fans who will pay this.

I would really wonder when this m1 max laptop with 1 tb storage and 32 gb ram costs in production more than 500 US Dollars.

Far away maybe in a tiny niche :D. But the overall experience on AMD, Intel, Nvida equipped devices is worlds better.
M1 soc's needs for everything which is not in this tiny niche the ultra buggy Rosetta translation.

In theory yes they can sell cheaper if they can procure cheaper components. In reality, businesses sell products at what customers are willing to pay and how much customer value it. If you can produce a product with lower cost and high value at the same time then automatically you will have higher profit margin.

Make a low cost product which has no value added to customer then customer will not even take it even if it is free.

But you can sell much more if the price is lower. A small niche has far, far less sales. The clue is the balance between price and sales. The m1 pro/max has too high prices, so the sales will be low compared to a product who would have half the price.

For max sales M1 Pro with 1 tb/16 gb/16" should have a price of 1250 Euros and 1tb/32gb/16" (max) should have price of 2000 Euros. This would be the right balance and customers solidarity for this brand would be much higher, because they dont have the feeling to be looted. And maybe they will accept imperfections out of the factory much more. Several users (included me) reported scratches and marks out of the factory. For around 3000 Euros i had no real doubt for sending it back. For 1250 Euros i had maybe kept it, because the chance for pixel failures or bad uniformity on the next device is pretty high.

I would say it's a strategy, once you drop price it will be hard to go up if let say the COGS goes up. People always whine when price goes up but not down, hence, if the price is near flat for the particular product/configuration then you just know that's their usual selling price and if you have high selling price you can give discount anytime anyway.

After all Apple is a business not a charity, they sell for profit to Apple & shareholders.

It works for prefered items very well, if the price goes up. Look for the gpu shortages :D. It's up again and the people are buying it like crazy. If you want a higher price you have to deliver more desired features. But if the price is too high only few will buy it. The M1 Max 32 gb for example costs around 3849 Euros, only a few professional will reguarly buy it.

I bought it too. Because 16 gb ram were not enough for me. But i had a gifted item in the back, which decreases the price to around 2000 Euros. I had never bought it, if i had to pay the full price. 2000 Euros sounding for me fair. It's the right value for this device in my opinion.

They are 2 trillion dollar company for a reason, they know how to price their products to be the most profitable profitable company not market share leader.

Yep, the reason for this high prices are introduced by chip shortages. They can only produce a few mbp, so they are shipping even macbooks with scratches and marks.

Price comparison of mbp 2021 with 32 gb ram:

The market is empty :D.

Only the cheap not really useable 16 gb models are available:

I think it's related to the ddr 5 ram shortage mostly. In Germany you can buy none ddr5 memory dimm's for Alderlake Z690.

I agree new MBPs are great, if i needed a strong laptop, only way to go. But looking at absolute performance benchmarks, combination of Intel + high-end discrete graphic card is still on top (wastes a lot more power though, no question about that). I'm sure Apple silicone will keep improving further though, and also forcing the competition into launching better products (which is only great for us, consumers). Recent changes are a nice kick up Intel's butt :)

Until Apple is not solving the compatibility problems to non Apple software there will be no competition.
Producing a semi useable arm soc isn't a big deal. Of course arm is very power efficient, but only really useable for niche use cases in terms of a laptop.

Also they have to install faster screens. Slow screens are no joy for many purposes. So much ghosting is pain for any motion picture.
