I think it is reasonable to expect a phone to be free of cosmetic defects and not behave oddly.

While I was formerly not a believer in stuff like airport randomly not working, and syncing magically not happening - I have seen it all now, particularly from apple camp.

A friend of mine had an iPod Touch that would sync with some of his computers, but not others. For no particular reason, granted those were all Macs, and they had all been restored, fresh iTunes libraries, old iTunes libraries, the same library, restored iPod, etc.. and the MBP that it wouldn't sync with, it never synced with! Until Apple replaced his iPod Touch and MBP until they DID sync. XD (I think it took 2 attempts!)

My iPod Touch (a 1st gen, granted) is fickle about Wi-Fi reception - I can be standing next to my router and get 1 bar of signal. Shoot, that's more the norm than anything else!

Unfortunately, a friend of mine is on his like.. 6th Pre. No joke.

So yah, it's understandable. Seen it happen quite a few times now :|

The 3G doesn't (officially). He was just mentioning the necessity to have a working phone to be reachable by all the people involved in the production. If you need to ask a producer about a set location, budget question or whatever and can't call him, that makes the job extremely, um, impossible.
Um he doesn't need an iPhone to make his "job" possible. He is a college student. He needs a phone, a free phone from AT&T would have worked and after the so-called first few replacements he had, he should have stopped and thought ... "hey, maybe I should be sure to use a more reliable phone if my freaking college career rests on this film."

He is apparently a film student and not an out of the box thinker that we'd hope he could be.

I'm a Longinotti- That's my last name, I'm not going to ruin it with a made up story- this is real,
What is real to you may not be real to others. 11 phones with "bonafide" problems ... not buying it. I believe you use the "iPhone burned my leg" story each and every time and those kids at the retail stores are so unsure what to do that they hand over a new phone.

People have done far less to ruin far better names on and off the internet. ;)

Sorry dude but, as a film-maker myself, I know that a broken phone doesn't mean the production goes to crap. Got a computer? Use it. Email etc. Use payphones to call the crew. Better still, go to them and talk to them. Didn't run well on the day? That's not your phone's problem, it's your planning that is off. Film didn't turn out so great? Blame yourself and the Director. NONE of this blame can even slightly be placed on the phone.

I do feel your pain, and I'd be as annoyed as you are if I had to have my phone changed 11 times. But saying it caused you to lose that credit is just you in denial. Suck it up.

Yeah, what a cop out. "My iPhone had a stuck pixel and made me fail my class...wahhhhhhhhhh!"

Hey what about me??? :D

I returned six MacBook Pros! Everyone had defects. After the sixth faulty, I thought "screw this, I´m going for PC!" And that is saying a lot, ´cause I absolutely HATE Winblows! I think Apple´s Quality Control is going down fast and they should really start focusing more on their production.

My Mac Pro, iMac and iPhone 3G is working fine though.

Eleven replacements

Consumers are idiots. No wonder we get half-assed releases from companies. This guy has tried 11 times and Apple still can't get him to go away.

OP grow up. If your phone was so damn important to your being on this earth you wouldn't have returned it for a couple of dead pixels you picky pain in the ass.

It's a good thing the OP is still in school, he will never survive in the real world with an attitude like that.

I'm a PM too, I manage 126 people in 8 countries spread over 5 time zones. I love my iPhone. But guess what I always keep in my bag? A Nokia E71, all ready to go if anything happens to my primary phone.

Man (boy) you need to take responsibility for your own actions and if something is really important to you, make contingency plans. 11 replacements, that's just stupid. Even if they were for real problems why would you keep it up, I think after 2 I would have moved on.

In the real world, blaming your professional failure on your phone will only get you fired.

I get weird errors on my phone sometimes, I just ignore it. If its bad, I reset some of the settings. If its awful, I restore.

Never had a serious hardware problem. The sleep button is a little loose and I have some light leak, but those aren't even issues.

If Apple aren't meeting your expectations, go elsewhere. I don't mean that in a rude way, I mean that in a sympathising way - if you don't like the product, show them by taking your custom elsewhere. In my experience the iPhone is a great product with great build quality (esp. due to the glass screen. Other phones use plastic).

I'm a university student myself (nanotechnology), and I took my exams whilst taking extremely high doses of highly addictive and highly sedating medication. If was so bad that leaning over gave me migranes and that if I went for a few hours without a dose I started getting dizzy and nauseous from the withdrawal. Yes, it cost me marks. You have to deal with it. Think of it as a challenge - for me, I accept it by reasoning that if I'm truly great at this subject, I should be able to get a good grade despite those constraints. After all, you won't have perfectly ideal exam situations in life, and dealing with those is part of the experience in becoming (in my case) an engineer. For you, as a film producer/director/whatever, you're going to have extraordinary challenges - ridiculously low budgets, unreliable hardware all over the place..etc, and overcoming those challenges is part of what being a great producer/director/whatever is about. Even better - use those things creatively to add to whatever you're making.

Most of the best things in all disciples comes from rag-tag scientists/movie directors/doctors/lawyers/etc... working under extraordinary circumstances but doing something great through improvisation. Don't complain about it - think about what it's doing for you and how you can use it.

:mad:You may remember me- I'm the guy who got his leg burned by the iPhone 3G- well, I'm fed up! Here's the deal: After my phone burned me, I had it replaced and signed a legal document saying I was fine and had no intention for a lawsuit. For a good will gesture, Apple sent me a time capsule and a bluetooth headset for free. Well, since July- almost a year ago, I've had 11 iPhone replacements... yeah- 11 IPHONE REPLACEMENTS!!!!!!!!!!! I've had one by one with a different problem every time: Disk issues, Dead pixels, Joan Rivers style cracking on the back... The good will gestures have even failed! I've been a loyal consumer to Apple for years! I'm tired of it! I can't take this anymore- I'm a film maker and I need my phone every minute- but since I've been sending it in EVERY MONTH! I can't get the people I need or the supplies- I have lost thousands of dollars and a year of college credit because of it. I'm really fed up. I'm going to see if I can get this POS replaced with the 3GS Maybe I'll have more luck. Please comment, I need some support right now. I HATE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:apple:James

You need 2 phones. On e back up phone at least. then you can just sync both, and be ready when 1 fails.

I would be sooo pissed.......

...if i was in your production team and you made me fail because you were too stupid to realize that you needed to get a back up phone or solve the problem rather then whining about it.

Seriously, did you not realize that maybe after the 5th or 6th replacement that the iPhone was not for you?!? If i had to replace anything 5 or 6 times I would defiantly not go back to the same problem.

By the way, I was wondering... How much money Apple is losing with all these returns?

I mean all the man hours dealing with the emails and phonecalls and so on. Then they have to pay all the UPS carriers. Then what are they gonna do with the faulty products? Are they gonna fix them or just try to sell them to another sucker? How much the repair costs to them?

I think that the customer is always right and no one should blame the OP for returning a faulty product. If Apple can´t make a freaking working product the customer has the right to return it. Apple´s first concern should be QC. I mean people expect perfection from Apple, ´cause that´s what they advertise and claim, you know the "Apple experience" what they are so proud of. But it seems, that the experience is more an more pure hell for many people.

Good lord, 11 issues? I have had the 2G, 3G, and now 3G S with NO issues. Insane. Sorry, but to me it sounds like you are to blame as it is statistically unlikely that any one person would ever experience 11 issues without being the cause of them.

Fritz Lang was very fortunate his iPhone was working just fine whilst working on Metropolis.

11 phones? Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you? Check yourself into a mental hospital, there is obviously something wrong with you.

If iphone was such a problem, we'd be hearing more about how much a POS it is. However, we're not and sales continue to climb. Obviously, YOU are the problem. Please do us a favor and don't get the 3GS or any iphone in the future. Oh, and seek "professional" help, you don't need the kind of help we offer.

wow, some of you guys are seriously just annoying individuals. I refuse to believe that you had it so bad that you needed to exchange 10 or 11 phones.
