IT'S BETA PEOPLE GET A LIFE! At almost 100 billion dollar company don't you think they thought all of this through? Apple will not offer a poorer user experience from a previous iOS version ... If they do go get a droid or galaxy phone.. Complain after the final version is released

Real NewYorkers don't use google maps for public transportation. Only hipsters that just moved here do that nonsense.

We ask the bus drive, subway/trainconductor or people in the area. There are so many daily changes, delays, and etc which google maps doesn't pick up on.

Car and walk work.. The public transportation Goes to a blank screen with a title "Routing apps".
My theory is apple will be partnering with third parties (as mention in the keynote) but integrating them right in the app... Sort of like yelp integration with reviews and "business cards".

Integrated into the app might be acceptable, but what I gather is that you'll have to tap the icon to launch the third-party app. Then you wait for the third-party app to load and calculate the route, and when it does it doesn't combine different forms of public transit like Google Maps does. There are points in Manhattan alone where you're a 20 minute walk from a subway station. The standalone subway route apps just don't cut it.

Not to cause a problem, but how did you navigate around NYC without an iPhone/iPad? Maybe it's just me, but blaming Apple for not being able to get around seems sort of shallow. Maybe there is something I don't understand. Are brains obsolete? Is Apple responsible for your bathroom visits?

I'm not blaming Apple for not being able to get around. I'm familiar with the subway system and don't need Maps for basic navigation; I need it to be efficient. No one has all the subway/bus schedules memorized. There are multiple ways to get places, and it's really nice to be able to plug my bookmarked destination into maps and know that I'm getting the quickest route possible at any given time. Using transit routing can literally shave 10-15 minutes off the time it takes me to get somewhere.

But the snark is appreciated.

And to those suggesting the Google Maps web app, it's cool for what it is, but it's not nearly an equivalent to the dedicated app in terms of ease of use. And it doesn't have streetview.

It's comments like these that make people think us New Yorkers are all stuck up jerks.

So I can take extra steps to get the same functionality in iOS6 as I did in iOS5 and previous versions? You're right. Problem solved.

Extra steps? just save the page on your home screen, once, it will behave just like the app you've got now.

Another Solution

If you have iOS 6 already, you are obviously a developer. It sounds like you have an idea for an amazing app, design it- it could be a real winner (i'd buy it).

Isn't this exactly why we have an Apple Developer Program?

Didn't Forstall say that the transit apps would be directly integrated into maps? So no leaving maps and swapping over to another app.

The real question is how intelligent will the integration be, will maps be able to start using the train app data, then switch to bus data? However that inteligence is the responsibility of Maps.

How can someone from USA that got one city in 3D get mad about it? We in Sweden STILL don't have Siri in swedish and we problably never wont get it until 2014 or 2013. Apple never cares about Sweden, because we're a small country.

OP:

Are you serious? How did you get ahold of the beta anyways? Because any legitimate dev would not be stressed over such a little issue in BETA 1!!!

Yes! apple can implement a viable workaround (which seems to be coming to us in the form of a third party extensions) by the time the firmware is released in a month or two.

Whos to say that they don't already have another beta version i.e: beta 2??? with the features you seek?

To me your just crying over nothing. Stay away from the betas and stick to released firmwares because you obviously can't grasp the concept of beta testing.

If it makes you feel any better. I care about sweden. And all of the beautiful women over there :D :apple:

And now, Apple gets rid of all of this and replaces it with turn-by-turn navigation which, for someone who doesn't own a car and drives a handful of times a year, is completely ****ing useless. And what else.. oh, no street view, ugly map tiles with garish colors and a flyover feature that's a complete novelty. So now I'm supposed to find mass transit routes through multiple standalone apps, which even together won't be able to duplicate the incredible ease and usefulness of Google's solution? This "third party developers do transit routing better than we do" bull from Apple is just a complete cop out.

And for what? So Apple can continue their immature little grudge match with Google, completely screwing millions of people who live in big cities and rely on mass transit in the process? What an unbelievably stupid move. If Steve Jobs were still around, I find it hard to believe he would allow a rollout of a redesign that would eliminate so many features like this.

So what do people like me do? Hold off on updating to iOS 6 I suppose. Hopefully Google releases a standalone maps app, but given Apple's immaturity in ditching their superior implementation in the first place, who knows if it will even get their approval? Apple might've even alienated them enough at this point that they won't bother developing one. If that's the case, hopefully some kind of jailbreak solution will allow me to keep the old maps app. I'd be lying if I said all this wasn't pushing me to consider Android.

Apple... is it too much to ask that you don't take away major features in your products that people actively rely on!? ****ing idiots.
Wow, if you can't get transit information and decent walking directions in iOS 6 for NYC, we here in Australia have absolutely no chance.

This is something that could very easily push me to get an Android or Windows Phone, I use Maps on an almost daily basis- and Apple, as they do, are no doubt going to focus on fixing the experience for Americans before they do so for Australia and the rest of the world. That's not a knock on Americans at all, that's just how Apple operates. We still can't access business listings with Siri here, for example.

Extra steps? just save the page on your home screen, once, it will behave just like the app you've got now.

Yeah, except that I can't set it as a default so it launches when I tap an address elsewhere in the OS, it doesn't have streetview, it doesn't have my location bookmarks, it doesn't have the compass, and it's an all-around slower, choppier, and more frustrating experience.

Yep, just the same.

If you have iOS 6 already, you are obviously a developer. It sounds like you have an idea for an amazing app, design it- it could be a real winner (i'd buy it).

Not a developer; just an observer who's stunned by Apple's arrogance in assuming we won't mind losing a feature just so they can stick it to Google.

Isn't this exactly why we have an Apple Developer Program?

So people who just want to get back basic functionality they've had for 5 years can learn objective C and devote months of their lives to writing an app to compensate for Apple's shortcomings?

I swear, the lengths some people will go to just to avoid admitting Apple screwed up..

OP:

Are you serious? How did you get ahold of the beta anyways? Because any legitimate dev would not be stressed over such a little issue in BETA 1!!!

When did I ever say I was a developer who had the beta?!? Jesus, some of you people...

And I think I've made it pretty clear it's not a little issue to me; it's something I use frequently. I tend to think you'd be annoyed if an integrated feature you used all the time was suddenly replaced with an inferior work-around.

Yes! apple can implement a viable workaround (which seems to be coming to us in the form of a third party extensions) by the time the firmware is released in a month or two.

WE ALREADY KNOW WHAT THE WORKAROUND IS. Jesus, all this time you've been acting like a smug jerk about this whole thing have you even bothered paying attention to what's been announced? We know what the workaround is; it's a list of third-party apps I have to choose between to launch transit directions externally. If the experience turns out to be not as crappy as I think it will I'll be surprised, but this will still never be as good as a fully integrated solution. Apple is just passing the buck to make up for their inability to come up with a decent transit routing solution.

To me your just crying over nothing. Stay away from the betas and stick to released firmwares because you obviously can't grasp the concept of beta testing.

You obviously can't grasp the concept of comprehending what was announced in the keynote. Why would we expect them to do something they gave absolutely no indication they would do?

So you don't even have the beta? So you still currently using google maps?

Wtf are you crying about then? Wow! Why not just wait until the firmware is released or at least until we get into beta 2 or 3 when 3rd parties have had a chance to implement their own public transportation apps into the new maps app?

I know the Toronto bus/subway system quite well, so most of the time I know where I'm going. But sometimes I will definitely search for the route if I need to be totally sure. So when I noticed that this functionality is temporarily missing, the thing I'm worried about is how good is the replacement going to be?

Well, actually, wouldn't it actually end up being better? I mean, here you'll have someone living in Toronto, or maybe even the TTC (yeah right! lol) build the transit portion. It'll be more accurate, updated quicker, and maybe it'll even have live bus tracking! I use Rocket Man to check bus times and TTC alerts, and it's accurate to the second since it uses the bus GPS to track where the buses are.

If this developer (or another) plans to do this integration, well I for one am looking forward to this replacement.

I can only hope it's completed by the time iOS 6 launches, and since it's several months from now, I'm staying positive.

In the words of the ignorant Kanye West... This thread is kray!

mods close this thread since it has absolutely nothing to do with testing the beta.

I'm sure there's probably already been a thread started about this, but it bears repeating.

As someone who lives in New York City (along with more than 8 million others), I use the public transportation routing feature on the iPhone's Maps app on an almost daily basis. Google's work in this area is really superb. Unlike the standalone NYC subway apps, Google's routing will actually include buses in my route (particularly useful on the far east side of Manhattan or the outer boroughs). Of course, there's also ferries, NJ Transit, LIRR, Metro North, and Amtrak integrated right in, along with the incredibly useful scheduling options.

New Yorkers. Always ignorant.

Neither do 95% of the other threads in this forum.

Yeah your right :p

But really to the OP. Just be patient man. This is apples #1 selling product. They've taken every aspect of iOS into consideration. Im sure you as well as everyone else on the planet will be more than satisfied with what ultimately comes out at launch.

Damn right. I'm a real New Yorker born and bred of 28 years before joining the army, and your answer is the right one.

I havent lived in NYC in 10 years, but whever I go back I still get around without a hiccup. Only a chump would need Google to get around on foot or the MTA. The same people that get their iPhones snatched on A train.

Do you use this app every day because you don't know how to get where you're going in the city you live in? Not trying to clown but seriously wanting to better understand is all.

Besides that, though, technology just isn't guaranteed, so I'm not personally surprised that things have changed after several years... You gotta remember that the smartphone is a relatively new endeavor, it's only about 5 years old! The way that companies will integrate or not is still being worked out but will always be a variable. Nothing is guaranteed. To live life that way is not the wisest. Maybe you can just keep an iPod Touch with the retina version screen and just tether to that and never upgrade it, that way you can get a good life expectancy out of it. I wish you the best, but a strong company is typically going to try to do things in-house when relationships sour... And business relationships sour often. I'm shocked that you're so surprised that this is happening. I do feel that Apple will ultimately get a more complete system to appease customers... I think things should be much smoother by early next year.

Nobody likes hipsters. But there's no need to go around insulting people. If you're tired of people being so reliant on technology to get around, tell them they should try relying less on it. Besides, some people really have a problem with directions, so they need maps more than others.

The OP seemed to put plenty of emphasis on being a NewYorker as if he speaks for all of us. That's why I made that statement. You live in NY long enough, you become very resilient to changes. Out of nowhere, too many snobs complain about every little thing as if everyone and everything should be catered to them.

The OP is crying over beta maps he never even used yet.
